PETA Asks band Pet Shop Boys to Change Name

FFS, yes. bastard litters and starvation being an unchecked foreseeable outcome. Lots of puppies getting the hot shot.

havce you had many pets? They exist for alot more than humping, or maybe your the next Dr. doolittle!

We have a boy dog, twig, but no berries. He still humps things now and then. Never wants for food, loves and is loved by our family, picture of health, sleeps like a dog and has a life i sometimes envy!

Would you release a tame dog into the wild?. FFS, thats a wonderful world. I can tell you live in an urban area and watch too much TV.

Typical human arrogance to defend the domestication of another animal like that.

If people didn't keep 'pets' then they wouldn't be tame, eventually they would reassert themselves back into their rightful position on the animal cycle - be it to die out or thrive.

Nature has a way of controlling things when things are out of 'whack'.

What do 'pets' exist for, other than humping?
Your animal that 'never wants for food' - does it hunt for it, or do you give them it from a packet/tin?
Thats how other hunting animals do it?
It sleeps like a 'dog'?
So what, its entire evolutionary history is to wake up, eat from a packet then sleep?
Ohh and yes, the 'love' thing - that is truly laughable.
You might 'love' it, but it doesn't 'love' you.

FYI - when a dog is 'humping' thats not sexual, thats a dominance thing within the 'pack'.

Most people don't know this, but when dogs are having sex, they do it arse end to arse end and lock their genitals inside the bitch for a while to give them a higher chance of mating.

So now ed 'knows' if my dog loves me. Nevermind he has never saw how my pet behaves or witnessed how it interacts with my family.

You sir are in ignorant, arogant duche noozle who does not know crapola about anything beyond that happy echo chamber in your own head where your own word is gospel.

Your actually a waste of my time, as it pointless to discuss things with you, considering your inability to hear anything beyond what you want to.

I've been hearing that some, lattely.

Alright people this is quite a heated and personal topic to people so our opinions do differ. Please curb the personal insults and take it elsewhere.

PETA does do some good work but this is a joke. For a while now I have been volunteering at a cat rescue centre and I have really had my eyes open to shelters and organisations, the cat protection league being the worst. They are selective in what they take and tend to put older cats down. We have a no kill policy and when we get cats in we whisk them straight to the vets and get them all their boosters and neuter them as there are so many cats that we have found dumped and wandering, we even now chip them before we rehome them under very strict adoption rules and home checks.

I know how animals behave and I know how humans act towards their pets.
The animals don't 'love' you.
You are the leader (that I am making a large assumption of because you show no ability to lead anything here, in fact your posts paint you as a follower more than anything) of the pack. You are the one that provides food and protection - thats it.

Unlike what Walt Disney wants you to believe, animals on that level don't love.

You can try to insult me all you like, you obviously have a great deal of anger inside of you - maybe you should try some anger management or something?

You're becoming a standing joke on this forum.

I may not listen to other arguments, but when the other arguments are 'my dog loves me so there' then why should I?

I agree 100% with all your posts. I don't know why 'some' people deny the obvious. Oh yeah, in fact, i do know, they're dumb
You know what I mean. Why do people do that?
They don't kill animals in the way that that person is suggesting.
They humanely euthanize them because there really isn't anything else they can do.
Their euthanasia rate is astoundingly awful, "no-kill" shelters should be a given within an animal rights community anyway; in 2008 PETA took in over 2000 animals, and found homes for 7. The rest were killed. 7 out of over 2000. That's ridiculous.

Fookin hell thats a shocking stat
Here's the part of those arguements I have a problem with (ignoring all the namecalling, because it's just getting silly)
responsible pet owners stop an animal from doing what it has, essentially, been put on the earth, procreate"¦.If people didn't keep 'pets' then they wouldn't be tame, eventually they would reassert themselves back into their rightful position on the animal cycle - be it to die out or thrive"¦.So what, its entire evolutionary history is to wake up, eat from a packet then sleep?...Ohh and yes, the 'love' thing - that is truly laughable. You might 'love' it, but it doesn't 'love' you"¦.I know how animals behave and I know how humans act towards their pets.
The animals don't 'love' you.
You are the leader (editing this part out because it is unnecessary and rude) of the pack. You are the one that provides food and protection - thats it.

So an animal's only purpose on this earth is to hump? They have no other purpose whatsoever besides hump and eat other animals? And humans shouldn't domesticate animals, because that violates their natural right to hump and eat, yet animals are not "evolved" enough to feel emotions. That's what I'm getting from this...I'm getting that humans don't have the right to have anything to do with interaction with animals, yet that animals are inferior to humans and cannot feel. That seems flawed and contradictory to me.

Of course humans interact with animals, we create symbiotic relationships in which both parties benefit, just like other animals do. Humans use animals for work/love, and animals are taken care of and have their physical and emotional needs met by their handler. To say that animals don't have emotions is just silly, and to me says that you haven't spent much time around them.

As far as evolution, dogs pretty much have been bred to live with humans and eat man-made food nowadays. That's what a thousand years of domestication will do to a species. That is now, more or less, their purpose.

As far as PETA, I think they are probably the worst thing for animal rights out there. If you advocate that animals have the right to live and be free and happy and blah blah, than "euthanasia" because it's kind to the animals should really be the last idea you want to embrace. As JCC (gasp I agree, I know) and Faith have stated, no-kill shelthers should be the norm for animal rights groups. Hell, there's even rehabilitation places for so called trouble animals that can't be placed out of no-kill shelters (I have a dog from one). Using JCC's stats (I'm to lazy to look it up right now), PETA is only placing 0.35% of the animals it "rescues". That's less than one half of one percent, and a pity.

To me, PETA demeans animals. It says they should all roam free and be allowed to do whatever they want, and that they aren't capable of having jobs and working with humans, because to put a dog to work is mean. As some know, the BF trains dogs, mainly for personal protection and sport work. PETA is vehemently opposed to dog sports, because the dogs are quote unquote forced to do things they don't want to, beaten, scared into attacking people, blah blah blah. Anyone who has watched things like Mondioring or Schutzund knows it can get a little rough some times. But here's the thing-the dogs LOVE it. You couldn't get a dog to do the things they do unless the dog wants to do it. They aren't trained to be mean or fight, they are trained to use their brains, figure out the most effective means to neutralize a problem, and get their job done.

Now, I don't avocate beating your dogs, or fighting them, or anything like that. But PETA's stance on it is that you shouldn't even give dogs complicated (and, yes, even stressful) exercises in order to stimulate and exercise their brains and bodies because it's "mean". It's alot better than letting them roam around the house (remember, it's cruel to put a dog outside) doing whatever they want and not getting any exercise other than walking to and from the food bowl.

Instead of attacking hunters and sport dog owners, PETA should be promoting responsible breeding, proper training, and spaying and neutering pets. In the wild, they need to realize that in order to promote healthy population levels, hunting is KEY. If we let certain populations of, say, deer get out of hand, then we end up with hundreds of animals starving to death. I think a bullett and ending up on someone's plate is a lot more humane than starving to death.

In short: PETA's ridiculous. This is just another instance of them proving that. It's a publicity stunt in my opinion.

I get that, but the average shelter places a lot more animals than they have to euthanize. It's as if PETA isn't even trying. Even the one in the organization's backyard does a better job with a fraction of the money PETA raises.

The average shelter doesn't rescue animals from across the country or nearly as many as PETA.

I hate the idea of pets for this very reason. You're justifying the killing of animals because 'its impossible to find homes'. Animals did not evolve on this planet just so humans could inject them with poison.

Animals should be allowed to roam free.

I'm not justifying anything. I'm just saying that has to happen. PETA themselves are against pets as well. Animals didn't evolve on this planted just so humans could do that true, but that's really the only choice, unless you want EXTRA animals to suffer for no reason.

FFS - responsible pet owners stop an animal from doing what it has, essentially, been put on the earth, procreate.

What a great world we live in.

That's what it's come to sadly! If pet owners don't than the only thing they are doing is allowing more animals to suffer. And well duh the world sucks.

Their euthanasia rate is astoundingly awful, "no-kill" shelters should be a given within an animal rights community anyway; in 2008 PETA took in over 2000 animals, and found homes for 7. The rest were killed. 7 out of over 2000. That's ridiculous.

No-kill shelters often don't work out because they can rarely care for very many animals. And I don't think you understand how shelters (especially ones like PETA) work. If these animals aren't adopted soon there isn't much they can do but euthanize.

Never EVER did I think I'd be defending PETA to this extent but some people are just so lost in fake rumors and crap. Yes, they change the name thing is stupid but they mostly say these stupid things for publicity anyways.

The average shelter doesn't rescue animals from across the country or nearly as many as PETA.

It's not rescuing if they KILL them though, is it?

Yes, they change the name thing is stupid but they mostly say these stupid things for publicity anyways.

So it is a publicity stunt then.

Right then...Def Leppard XD Man... I should investigate and THEN learn how to spell 😛

It's not rescuing if they KILL them though, is it?

Do you even know what you are saying? They EUTHANIZE them because they have no other choice. Would you rather these animals still be living in horrible conditions before PETA got there?

So it is a publicity stunt then.
The thing about them wanting that band or whatever to change their name? Probably, because they want more attention to their cause.

Yes, I do know what I am saying.
Do you know the definition of euthanization? It's a pretty word for KILL. MURDER. PUT DOWN. Fancy words don't change the outcome hon.

I understand. But I also understand that they don't just take these animals in TO kill. They have to euthanize them because there isn't any other choice.

Your wrong. How do they 'have' to kill animals? Theres no justifying it.
The average shelter doesn't rescue animals from across the country or nearly as many as PETA.

Smaller independent shelters tend to band together in networks, there are numerous forums online where they all socialise and report cases, so if they are unable to take the animal then another independent shelter close to the area does. The same goes for speciality shelters that exist solely to deal with the more feral types as they are in a better position to cater for them. So if they have no capacity in their shelter to take the animal they fill find another one via the network that can. Personally given what I know I would rather deal with a band of independent shelters whose main focal point is the animals rather than a larger organisation who tends to focus on the publicity.

I disagree as per my comments above. For example the shelter I volunteer with is quite small but they had 40 cats all at once last summer and each cat was given a lot of care, love and work. To me PETA started out with the right idea and the right intentions but somewhere along the way they seemed to have lost the love and the passion and it is now more focussed on the business end rather than the animals. I'm not saying their workers don't care because i'm sure that is not the case but the higher ups need to spend some time with the rescued animals to gain a point of perspective.

I think they do it, because it seems to be the best for the animal. The animal might be in great pain, or unable to survive on it's own. It's then better to put the animal to sleep, for it's own sake, on a humane and painless way

randiann agrees: But there IS other choices, that's the point. Calling it a prettier name doesn't change what they are doing

Can you give me some examples of these other choices?

Yeah, but these are smaller shelters. PETA's shelters are by no means small. These other shelters may ban together and help each other out, but their numbers aren't nearly as big.

I know what you mean. But it's a fact that no-kill shelters are limited to a certain amount. I mean 40 cats? That's not very many at all.

I think Faith gave some pretty good examples. Is it not better to save 40 cats than kill 1,993 and save 7 (again, using JCC's numbers)? You can't call it saving if they kill them.

If you look at Canada (it might be Quebec in particular) ALL of their animal shelters are no-kill animal shelters. As in every single one of them. It's law up there, and they are making it work. Why can't PETA, who claims to be pro-animal rights, follow their lead?

My problem isn't so much with euthanization (although I don't like it) as it is with PETA's hypocritical stance on the matter. You can't jump on people for eating meat and putting their dogs outdoors, and kill animals for their own sake at the same time. It's two contradictory ideas. That's my real "beef" with PETA.

(I love my pun!)

I do see the point you are making but bigger is not always better, in fact the bigger the shelter the less dedication to each animal because they don't have the time. Is it not better to have a network of smaller shelters than one big one? By a network (and by network I am talking about at least 50 shelters in my area) I mean a range of different sizes from small to large.

I know what you mean. But it's a fact that no-kill shelters are limited to a certain amount. I mean 40 cats? That's not very many at all.

To a small shelter with two permanent workers and the rest volunteers 40 cats is a lot. My point was even though they could not accomodate any more at that time when they came across more that they could not house temporarily they would find them another shelter. Why can't PETA/RSPCA/SSPCA/CPL do this?

Again it leads back to my belief that those who set the policy need to spend some time on the floor so to speak and remind themselves why they started in the first place.

Here's the part of those arguements I have a problem with (ignoring all the namecalling, because it's just getting silly)

Tell me where I said that that animals were inferior.
What makes humans feeling emotions superior?

We don't even have proof that our existence isn't just to 'hump', but the urge we have TO procreate is the greatest driving force of all.

You want to interact with animals, thats fine, but don't domesticate them to the point that all they do is sleep and eat at your feet.
Don't buy one to keep it locked in a cage all of its life, with or without wings.

All that you have said though, the animals have little choice in the relationships we decide to create.
We either train their actual nature out of them or we breed it out of them and if that doesn't work, we kill it.

Dogs were, or rather the wolves they decended from, created so that we could breed and breed and breed until they became a race of animals to do our bidding and entertain us.
Thats not a justification for why we have dogs now.
Nor is saying that we love them!

Animals should never have been domesticated in the first place and that will never change now, does NOT mean that its right.

I also love the fact that you say 'animals should have jobs'.

Like the Canaries that tested for methane underground?
Like the dolphins and seals used to find and detonate water mines, killing themselves in the process.
Like Monkeys trained to jump through rings of fire?

Dogs should not be used as personal protection, doesn't matter if you do it humanely or not.

Its an absolute lack of respect for animals like this that justifies what is tantamount to the oppression of an entire species!

I would ALSO appreciate, instead of bitching, just delete the comment you deem as 'unnecessary and rude' rather than make more of it because you put something out of context just further adding to the already inaccurate view of members on this board that I am the one causing any friction.

You want to defend your 'friend', thats fine, but don't do it at my cost because I have no issue what so ever retaliating in kind to anyone!

I think Faith gave some pretty good examples. Is it not better to save 40 cats than kill 1,993 and save 7 (again, using JCC's numbers)? You can't call it saving if they kill them.

Not really. You'd rather those other saved ones (even though they are euthanized) suffer for years to come? I sure wouldn't.

If you look at Canada (it might be Quebec in particular) ALL of their animal shelters are no-kill animal shelters. As in every single one of them. It's law up there, and they are making it work. Why can't PETA, who claims to be pro-animal rights, follow their lead?

"They are making it work". No kill shelters only save the animals lives that they have. If there were ONLY no kill shelters, more animals would suffer.

They kill because they have to.

I completely agree, Bigger is not always better. But the thing is that PETA's is very big because they do rescue a lot of animals so it's just the way it goes.

To a small shelter with two permanent workers and the rest volunteers 40 cats is a lot. My point was even though they could not accomodate any more at that time when they came across more that they could not house temporarily they would find them another shelter. Why can't PETA/RSPCA/SSPCA/CPL do this?

Because there are many more lives to save and only focusing on what animals that you have isn't really helping much.

In killing though, they contradict what they are about. More animals don't suffer because of no kill shelters in Canada, instead more get placed into homes. And I bet those 40 cats thought they made a HUGE difference.
