Pig Island

Pig Island is an island located in the Bahamas, uninhabited by people yet home to pigs.

Legend has it that the pigs were dropped off on the island by sailors, who planned to come back and cook them. However, the sailors never returned and the pigs survived by eating scraps dumped from passing boats.

The pigs are now fed by locals and tourists and they swim out to greet any new company.

That was a fairly common practice in the 1700's and 1800's. Ships would regularly carry pigs or goats on board for the fresh meat supply (and milk from the goats) and would leave some, the offspring of their original stock, off wherever they might put ashore for fresh water and fruit, not so much with the idea of themselves having a barbeque later as to furnish native livestock for anyone later shipwrecked in the area, a not uncommon occurrence at that time and in that area.

Which is so much better that what I had first imagined- like some horrible D. Moreau type place, or maybe a cheezy 70's horror movie along the lines of 'The Rats' or 'Slugs' or something.
