But, the question remains whether soy protein also may increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. After all, the reason it is suggested as a substitute for the hormone estrogen is that the phytoestrogens in soy protein may mimic the effects of estrogen in women.

A new study of women in Shanghai, China, suggests that, unlike hormone pills, high soy protein intake may actually decrease the risk of developing breast cancer.
