Oh but the sanity is so overrated (sw)...

Now I am getting all paranoia over this... Do I use the capital thingy? Oh noes.. I am so fusked

Look! I capitalised my first word! 😀

But what I wanted to say, it annoys me too. Just like people who forget punctuation, or use text speak, or whatever. Not just here but in general, and partly because sometimes, I have no idea what people are trying to say (because I'm not a native speaker and things like that) Anyway, I will try to pay more attention than I already do, however sometimes it's also my rather crappy keyboard that seems to hate me. But I guess, that's what the edit button is for 😉

I know I don't have authority here, so people will probably ignore me, but while were on that...Could we also shortly discuss punctuation? That's what's driving me crazy, when people write sentences that go over 3 lines and never once use a comma. It just makes everything unreadable!

I agree, the use of capital letters is nothing compared to a sentence that doesnt end. In fact, I usually don't even bother reading posts like that... i begin to read, get pissed, and move on.

Its all well and good saying that, but some people like me really, really struggle with the whole grammar thing! Its not as easy as asking them to suddenly get good at punctuation. The only reason why my spellings good on here is becuase i have a spell check thing on my internet.

Oh geez, yes, proper grammar. I mean, I'm only thirteen and I can use it. I don't understand why people don't.

It'd help if people would preview their posts before posting, I do it all the time and it helps me with typos here and there. But that's just a suggestion from grammar-freak me.

do that too :)

Of course not everyone can be perfect (I´m one of those for example) and some of course have a "problem". But some people clearly don´t care enough. And that´s what can bug people. If one expects everyone to write perfectly one is in the wrong place, but asking people to at least care a little about how they write isn´t too much too ask.

Have you noticed that you use ´ instead of '? ;)
Well everyone's going to start caring when I start deleting posts...

Right ON! That's what I'm talking about! You GO, girl!

Thank you! This, the bad punctuation, and the all caps thing drive me NUTS. SO glad you put your foot down....or in this case, what's-his-name's hammer.

I'll try very hard to have good grammar 🙂 Most of the time, I'm pretty good at it for the capital letter but sorry if my spelling is wrong, I'm still learnig english 🙂

which is why being harsh over grammer on the internet doesnt really have a place; the internet is inherently very international.
The Spelling Nazi says: "Not only is Buffy Summer's sanity at stake but many of our members do not speak English as their first language, so proper spelling, grammar and punctuation is helpful to them...plus it makes my left eye twitch...a lot 🙂"

Well, hell, a perfect reason to use proper spelling, grammar and punctation: just that get that little wonky left eye of yours to twitch.... a lot.

IF its an occasional thing in a post, I have no issue.
I think some people need to realise that not everyone have perfect spelling, punctuation and grammar.

The ones that get irked over this, in my opinion, are the ones with the problem.

If someone posts long threads and consistently ignores punctuation, then they are fair game, but if its obvious that the person has tried, give them a break!

OK 'has' not 'have' - that was genuine error.

Totally. I know not everybody understands. But when an entire post is in lowercase letters and in one long string of words with no punctuation whatsoever, it severely degrades the ability of the reader to comprehend the message--and then what's the point of written communication? Like that one poster we had a few months ago who refused to correct her writing style and everyone stopped reading her posts because they were completely indecipherable. If someone makes a typo here or there, or (God forbid) uses British punctuation instead of American (😉), I'm not going to blink. But protracted misuse of the written language is really annoying.

"or (God forbid) uses British punctuation instead of American" It's not our fault you can't spell "colour" =P
Oh yes, it annoys me to no end when people don't use capitals, apostrophs (though I think ´'s are even worse than not using any) or punctuation marks at all. It's not THAT hard to push some extra buttons.

Though I have to say - these boards are so refreshing to read after the things I see going on on other message boards because the majority of people here actually can spell.

That is the point we are making, everyone makes mistakes, myself included. We are not out to mark all your posts with a little pen, just asking simply that you take your time when posting and think about what you are posting before you do it.

My biggest pet peeve is text talk, there is no need for it when you have a keyboard to type and more importantly as Pointy said we have members here who do not speak English as a first language so its difficult for them.

There are members past and present who have been really bad in their posts, they have had them edited, they have been spoken to and they do improve. That is noted and appreciated.

I know thats the point the MODS are making, but reading this thread, if you're a newb or someone that does have issues, this could come across as you being told to leave because you don't 'speak properly'.

I just wanted to make it clear, through obvious replies, that it is OK just as long as you try.

When I quoted your post it wasn't because I disagreed with you in any way - more that your post was relevant to what I had also wanted to say.

Thats fine, just doesn't hurt to be extra clear too everyone:)
I cannot express my extreme WORD and YES to all of this.

Seriously, just TRY. If English isn't your first language, that's cool, we get it, we're not gonna hold it against you. But there are many other cases that just make people look flat out lazy, and honestly, stupid. I see a post typed in horrid English by someone I know who knows the language and I skip it, regardless of whatever point they're trying to make.

On the subject of 1337 speak and the like - if anyone really uses that seriously, there's a need for a crash course in the English language. It won't break your fingers to type out 'your' or 'you're' instead of 'ur', really. I promise. .:nods sagely:.

And I don't want to seem like I don't care about the people who struggle with it - I understand that not everyone is a big English dweeb, but there are certain basics that people who grew up with English as a first language just KNOW. USE IT. Personally, I'll take you about a billion times more seriously if you take the time to check your posts before you submit them.
