I totally agree with you, Police Academy is timeless and should remain timeless Police Academy should be given a reboot,
preferably a size 12 up the jacksie.
 
I've said it before, but it can't hurt repeating, just about everything hat we see in the movies and on TV now is either a sequel, a remake, or a spinoff of something that we have already seen. What happened to the concept of originality?

I have to laugh at the term "creative arts". There seems to be a lot of "badge engineering" just like the Mercury Sable was a Ford Taurus with a different insignia. But this is excusable in the automotive world - there is a lot of money to be saved by reusing the same design in a car and for people who remember the halcyon days of the automotive industry, Mercury brings an instant association with more luxury than Ford. But there is no savings with sequels, reboots, remakes or spinoffs over having a completely new story. It all comes down to the nature of trying to maintain a career in the entertainment business. If you propose an entirely new show and it doesn't do all that well, your career is in jeopardy because it appears that your judgement of what people want to watch does not line up with reality. If you propose a remake of Buffy with a black girl as the lead and it flops, you can always fall back on the excuse that the audience is more racist than you thought and it does not impact your career as much to be associated with a failure that can be excused in that way.

As for sequels, reboots and remakes, the marketing is already halfway done. No one would greenlight a completely new movie about a group of women fighting ghosts. But as a remake of Ghostbusters, everyone knows what to expect and no one has to explain what the movie is about, just like a new Buffy would need no explanation because everyone who is interested knows what the old Buffy was about. Don't underestimate marketing as part of a movie - a lot of people like the familiar, just like Top 40 radio stations that play the same limited playlist over and over again. Music charts were not foisted on us out of nothing - people noticed that the same songs tended to get picked on juke boxes and created the idea of a listing with number 1 as the most often selected and this started back in the 1940's. Movies are the same in that the familiar is always going to be an easier sell than something new. We have movie rating threads where sometimes some obscure movie gets top ratings but never got screen time or made money whereas some piece of schlock remake, reboot or sequel was garbage but made a lot of money and showed on a lot of screens. Given a choice of art or money, the movie and television industries always go for the money.
 
I loved the Police Academy movies! Though they did lower in quality as it went along, if I recall correctly. I wonder if there'd be a lot more fart jokes now though, feels like it's hard to side-step the "what's too offensive" line with jokes now because there are so many outraged online mobs just waiting to be offended. Otherwise, it's one of those things I actually feel is ripe for a sequel/reboot whatever. Such an easy concept to re-create with new characters.

Now I feel like re-watching the originals!

Farts offend me
Yeah first four were the best. There were always like random sketches, some good, some bad. It was when they tried silly plots and switching locations when they fell apart. Probably say 2 is the best. Love Mahoney going under cover in the gang😎

Maybe that would be the joke. The 'gang' are all back training the new recruits and all of them find their jokes mean and offensive and they get a lesson from the new recruits on what is right and wrong to do and say. It would be the PC Police teaching a moral lesson to everyone. Yeah... nevermind. That doesn't sound too funny.
