Political Correctness?

Back to political correctness... so now I've been meeting my friend's friend... who by the way is a jerk... and this guy is a freaking antisemite and racist pro-bush nazi ... so he was saying stuff I won't even repeat here cause it's so ridiculously immature and stupid (and I slapped him for that too and he stopped after that) ... but since he was saying such things I was telling my "friend", how come I can't say black squirrel without you saying anything and he just said something totally horrible and you're not even moved... the answer (besides her adoring him) was you don't say that in "society"... but since when is it ok to say such offensive things at all? I mean that's such an hypocritical behaviour, you don't say something not really offensive in front of them but you're allowed to be so freaking insultive the rest of the time?
That is utter bullshit!

If something is black and there is a black person around, I'll say it's black. It doesn't matter to me and I'm sure it wouldn't matter to them. Most of my friends are of black descent and I can honestly say that what you said wouldn't have offended them at all. But what your friend did was unecessary and might be mis-interpreted as racist to some people who might have overheard. That's like saying, "Oh don't mention cancer in front of her because she suffers from it." Being black,hispanic,or asian is not a disease so people should stop acting like it is.

OK here's a winner...
Sunday a commuter plane crashed in Kentucky and 49 died in the crash. A sad and unfortunate event ofcourse.
But the Emmy Awards is being criticized for the opening where Conan O'Brien was on a plane saying "What could go wrong?", totally fake crash (you don't even see the plane at all) and Conan's on the beach and Hugo walks by telling Conan to get a number about wanting to get off the island. Then the rest of the vignette you see Conan going from show to show (The Office, 24, House).
Obviously this was taped earlier in the week and was not a live skit but the PC Police are all over it!?!?

I had a friend back when I was a kid who was French (from Quebec, I know that doesn't really count, but don't tell THEM that...LOL!). He'd walk into my house and use language in front of my mom that would make a dockworker blush. I asked him to stop, but he couldn't seem to get the hint, so next time I was at his place, I dropped a few French "T-bombs"...funny, I never got to go back, but he did clean it up a bit at my place...

Well that's rude... Quebec people are weird 😉 .. hehe jk.. but yeah.. sometimes swearword slip out of my mouth but I do not say them again when i'm told not to... or I try to for the more common like sh*t... but I'd definitely have gone back and apologised if I had been your friend...

Sighs... who invented swearword again? though I have to say they make your likfe better when you're well pissed off hehe
 
so i was at a music festival a few weeks back and we were sitting around chatting and eating a bit of dinner before going to see the band. i went into my tent to pick up some stuff and found the door was soaking wet.

i come out, somewhat damp and proclaim. "ugh Funking Dew!"

which oddly made everyone stop and stair at me like i'd said something terribly wrond and they all felt a little silly when i pointed out i was talking about the evening dew on the tent.
 
I hate political correctness, it just makes people more ignorant than actually protecting people, IMO. People get offended over the dumbest things.

For example. Most words, especially in English, have several meanings. So you can use them as whatever meaning you want. Well...you know how people use the word gay as meaning "lame" or something? Why would a gay person just ASSUME that someone who uses gay for one of it's three definitions, the one that is slang, is homophobic? People around here use gay all the time, it doesn't mean anything, people aren't trying to be offensive. I know a gay guy who uses it that way.

So it really pisses me off when a gay person flips out about that. I've been called all sorts of things for using that word...it's ridiculous.

And I think saying African American is stupid. I don't get offended by being called white. I don't know any black people who get offended by being called black. So I don't say African American.

But as a White person, has your colour description been used as a means of persecuting you?

There is a place in the world for a certain level of political correctness. Granted in most cases it has gone too far, but being politically correct, actually i'd prefer to use the term 'socially aware', is not a bad thing.
I know that people use the term 'gay' to mean 'lame'. I myself use it in this context, but in honesty I, as everyone else, is wrong in doing so.

The vulgar slang 'gay' we use isn't based on the original meaning of the word but is in fact based on the homosexual connotation it has.

Another term I use alot is 'retard'. Just because alot of people use these terms does not dismiss the fact they are born from a means to persecute others.

The ones like 'Gingerbread men' or the nursery rhyme 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' being changed because someone is trying to make statements is wrong, but you wouldn't walk around the street shouting 'nigger' to someone, or even 'cu*t' and these words are born from the same area as 'gay' and 'retard' as they are simply used from an offensive stand point.

I think it's fairly clear what's implied by using "gay" like that. Both the person using the term and the intended audience are expected to understand that calling something "gay" means it's lame specifically because it refers to gay people, and I don't think anybody could reasonably argue that the intention is affectionate or devoid of ill intention. It's most definitely homophobic, it reinforces the stigma associated with the word "gay", and getting offended at it's use as such is thoroughly justified.

I understand that sometimes people get frustrated with stuff like the Baa Baa Black Sheep thing, but the fact is, a good deal of the political correctness freak-outs are either isolated incidents blown out of proportion or even urban legends. Lookit, courtesy costs nothing, and offense is irrevocable. Does it really make your day that much harder to sidestep offending somebody? If you know the word is probably going to piss somebody off, why would you use it? Now, I try not to take offense unless it's intended; but if somebody uses an offensive word simply because they can't be bothered to show a bit of cop-on around me, then they're insulting me in more ways than one.
 
Speaking of the gay thing... I usually don't mind if people use the word "gay" in a negative way. My friends do all the time (actually they say "hor-bög" which is a made up word that translates "whore-fag", and has got nothing to do with a gay prostitude), and they obviously know I'm gay etc., so it's nothing like that.
But, in my new class there has been a lot of jokes having to do with gay sex or being gay (guy gay that is), even from the teachers. Now, none of these people mean it in a bad way, and they are funny, and stress the fact that they are so not homophobic... And as I said, it didn't bug me at first, but it's starting to. I mean for how long is this going to be funny? For how long are gay jokes going to be the most common ones in my class?

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't mind peole using the word gay, usually, but it's just not funny when it goes too far, and sometimes I which people could be just a tiny bit more politically correct... or at least try to be..
 
I didn't used to mind, and I don't mind if a friend of mine is clearly having a cheeky joke at my expense, but that's different. It does bother me that people are so casual about it, and it bothers me that it seems to be getting more acceptable instead of less so.

You give a person an inch, they'll steal a mile.
As long as there is an audience for a joke it will be told, thats why 'Blonde' Jokes, 'Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman' jokes(which on the bare bones are negatively aimed at racial stereotype) and any other negative image ones ae still prevalent now even though they've been in the system of 'comical interpretation' for decades.
Lowest common denominator find them funny.

I always love the comment that preceeds alot of jokes...

I'm not sexist but.....

The basic fact is, anyone who uses that 'but' is actually telling you that they are. No two ways about that. They may tolerate because they are forced to, but the moment they can exhibit their true feelings without fear of rebuttal, they will.

I tell you another one that I like, guys that can't be homophobic because they like Lesbians.

HA, they don't 'like' lesbians, they like the fantasy of Angelina Jolie and Sarah Michelle Gellar having a private finger buffet then asking the guy to join them.

I have some lesbian friends and the amount of guys that have said to me something along the lines of 'i'll make em straight' or 'she'd change her mind if i fu**ed her', which shows not only homphobia(because as much as I love my friends, if they were straight, not many guys would be so desperate to have sex with them) but a lck of understanding on who these women are.
