55. Should Julian Assange be tried in court for sexually assaulting (and raping) women and for releasing top secret government and military documents to the public?

If the charges are legitimate, hell yes. I'm in support of Wikileaks, but if he's a rapist, sorry, he doesn't get automatic sainthood because of his work. The timing of the rape charges is unfortunate and worthy of discussion, but dismissing them entirely because of that is wrong. There are potentially REAL victims here. They shouldn't come second just because this guy is famous or popular.
There is some speculation these women were lying. They accused him of rape the day before all wikileaks stuff happened (I think, dad filled me in when I was making dinner last night so it could be the day of). My father thinks these women were lying and so do many of his friends. I'm all for putting rapists behind bars... but a family friend of a family friend knew the Duke lacrosse guys. That RUINED their life. I want to make sure this guy actually raped these claims of rape are legitimate before rushing to send him to jail. A lot of people have a lot to gain by sending him to jail.

I don't even know what WikiLeaks is. I heard it mentioned on the news last night, and there was something about some guy, but I wasn't really paying attention.

There is always speculation that rape victims are lying. That's why so few victims report their rapes. In the U.S., less than 20% of rapes are reported, yet 1 in 6 women will experience rape or sexual assault. According to the FBI/law enforcement here, only 2% of reported rapes are false- a percentage that is similar to most other reported crimes, like theft and fraud. The charges brought up against Julian Assange are from Sweden so perhaps those statistics are not entirely accurate, but the prejudice against rape victims is still alive and well in many other parts of the world, probably Sweden included. (Anyone from Sweden here? I'm not well-informed on how well matters of rape/sexual assault are handled there).

In the case of Julian Assange and the timing of those women's accusations, it is just as likely that they believed once he became such a celebrity of sorts that their cases and stories would be taken more seriously, or that his account of what really happened would be scrutinized more intensely. Just as likely as the idea that they are lying, I mean. I'm aware of how false rape charges can damage everyone involved, but I don't see how in any case, our first concern should be with the alleged rapist rather than his alleged victims. If people wanted to destroy Julian Assange(and yes, there are many of those people out there), I don't see how false rape charges would be their first idea to pursue.

There are a lot of questions and I don't feel like answering all of them. But this statement will pretty much sum up how I would have answered these questions: anyone should be able to do what they want as long as it doesn't harm themself or others.

My basic views are as follows:

I am pro-choice/anti-guns and pretty much a pacifist. I agree with stem cell research, don't like nuclear weapons and do like sustainable energy resources. I am passionate about free speech and agree with Wikileaks' decision to release data. However if it becomes an issue of national security then obviously there are problems with it. It brings us the question of how free can our free speech really be without harming those around us.

Of course I think that homosexuals should have the same rights as heterosexuals and I also think that politics and religion should be kept as separate as possible. Thankfully in the UK we don't have much of a problem with that.

That pretty much sums me up.

Regardless of whether or not these questions are serious, there was a politics discussion thread opened right before this one so do we really need two?

Don' feed the troll...
Like really, what the hell kind of a question/answer is that?

The same kind as should NYC be its own country.

Some of the questions are just ridiculous though. Like really should the age of consent be moved down to 13? Who would ask that? And who would want that?!
