British politician Jo Cox, described as a rising star of the opposition Labour Party, has died as a result of her injuries from an attack in her constituency Thursday, police said.

The 41-year-old is the first British lawmaker to be killed in office since Conservative MP Ian Gow was assassinated by the IRA in 1990.

Cox was shot and stabbed in the street in Birstall, near Leeds in northern England, the Britain Press Association reported, citing eyewitnesses. She had just finished a regular public meeting with constituents.

A 52-year-old man was arrested shortly afterward close to the scene of the attack, said Dee Collins, Temporary Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police. Weapons, including a firearm, were recovered, she said.
At 1.48 p.m. local time, less than an hour after the attack, Cox was pronounced dead by a doctor working with a paramedic crew. The MP's bereaved husband, Brendan Cox, said that her killing marked the "beginning of a new chapter in our lives."
"More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love," he said.
"I and Jo's friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo."

Police have not commented on the circumstances surrounding the attack and a motive wasn't immediately clear. But a witness claimed that the assailant who attacked Cox was yelling "put Britain first," the Press Association reported.

Clarke Rothwell, who runs a cafe near the murder scene, told the Press Association: "He was shouting 'put Britain first.' He shouted it about two or three times. He said it before he shot her and after he shot her." The gunman fired three shots, the final one at her head, he told the Press Association.

Another witness, Hichem Ben Abdallah, said the attacker kicked Cox as she lay on the ground until a bystander intervened and the attacker produced a gun and shot her, the Press Association reported.
"There was a guy who was being very brave and another guy with a white baseball cap who he was trying to control and the man in the baseball cap suddenly pulled a gun from his bag," he said.

The gunman was wrestling with Cox "and then the gun went off twice," Abdallah told the Press Association. "I came and saw her bleeding on the floor."

Footage circulated of the suspect on the ground after being apprehended by uniformed police officers.
 
Really sad news. I didn't really know who she was, but she leaves behind a young family and that's just so sad for her children.
 
Horrible, horrible, horrible...this woman was just doing her job and now her husband is a widower and her children have lost their mother. And yet the idiots emerge from those dark corners of Twitter etc. to try and make political gain from this tragedy. I despair for my country. So was it just the EU voting thing that got her killed? That's what they meant by put Britain first, yeah?
 
According to something I saw on Twitter, she was fighting for the UK to accept more Syrian refugees. Immigration is playing a major, major part in the referendum.

The whole thing is senseless and disgusting.
 
Its a very sad day for England as a country and for politics as a whole. My thoughts are with her family. This is just disgusting.
 
I'm not educated on UK politics, but this is just awful. That poor family 🙁
 
Absolutely sickening. We won't know the full details for a while yet but it appears to be an act of terrorism and that she was targeted for seeing people outside of this country as humans not just immigrants.

The reported shouting of "put Britain first" is most likely tied into the current referendum debate. However that phrase most likely comes from reading the output of the far right hate group Britain First. They are a political party that have had great success on social media feeding poisonous images and messages to the racist and ignorant in this country.

Just terrible. It's heartbreaking and shocking. My heart goes out to her friends and family. People should just tone donwn the rhetoric becasue you don't know what nutter is listening. We've got to the point where we are calling politicians 'evil' and their opinions 'monstrous' and forgetting they are human beings. We have to have some level of respect or I just feel we are somehow encouraging mentally ustable people into committting these acts of violence

As the The Bronze said it's probably a reference to the organisation Britain First.

That said memory in extreme circumstances isn't that reliable. I've only seen the "Britain First" comment attributed to a single witness.

The stuff they recovered from his flat would add credence to that report though.
 
According to eyewitness accounts, which are still under investigation, Mair was armed with a knife and a gun, either antique or homemade, and may have shouted “Britain First” when he attacked Cox, a possible reference to the far right Britain First party, whose leader, Paul Golding, is a former member of the white nationalist British National Party. The Daily Telegraph reported that Mair’s brother claimed Mair has a “history of mental illness,” and neighbors called him a “loner,” but he also has a long history with white nationalism.

According to records obtained by the Southern Poverty Law Center Mair was a dedicated supporter of the National Alliance (NA), the once premier neo-Nazi organization in the United States, for decades. Mair purchased a manual from the NA in 1999 that included instructions on how to build a pistol.

Mair, who resides in what is described as a semi-detached house on the Fieldhead Estate in Birstall, sent just over $620 to the NA, according to invoices for goods purchased from National Vanguard Books, the NA’s printing imprint. Mair purchased subscriptions for periodicals published by the imprint and he bought works that instruct readers on the “Chemistry of Powder & Explosives,” “Incendiaries,” and a work called “Improvised Munitions Handbook." Under “Section III, No. 9” (page 125) of that handbook, there are detailed instructions for constructing a “Pipe Pistol For .38 Caliber Ammunition” from components that can be purchased from nearly any hardware store.

The NA may be best-known for the work of its now-deceased founder, William Pierce, a former physics professor who also wrote racist novels. One, The Turner Diaries, tells the post-apocalyptic fictional story of a white man fighting in a race war that may have provided inspiration for Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.

The Daily Telegraph also reported that Mair was a subscriber to S. A. Patriot, a South African magazine published by White Rhino Club, a pro-apartheid group. The club describes that magazine’s editorial stance as opposed to “multi-cultural societies” and “expansionist Islam.” According to the Daily Telegraph, a January 2006 blog post attributed to the group described Mair as “one of the earliest subscribers and supporters of S. A. Patriot.”​

Makes me wonder if racism and hatred are a mental illness. It seems that the public is quick to jump on the mental illness train after something like this happens, and no doubt one would have to be somewhat mentally troubled to kill like this, but it does make me wonder how racism, bigotry and hate are looked at and studied when it comes to mental illness.

Aw, seeing her kids just broke my heart a litte bit more.
Very sad.
 
How could all that negative stuff be classified as a reason cause of a person being mentally ill.
Being mentally ill a person might let that sort of crap in and those people might then make the person kill. But there are always do gooders willing to make excuses for the person so that he or she does not get vilified for what they did.

I don't think being mentally ill should keep someone from being vilified or given responsibility for their actions. But I do think the world would benefit from looking at this hatred that is seemingly sparking more and more violence.

Like, is this intolerance more common today? Is it more accepted in society or certain cultures? Why are people acting on it in a public way? Why can be done to change it?
 
Had the hatred been taken care of effectively when it happened. Like a load of blame was put on Rock n Roll and the people of that generation, but the elders of that time were running the country, they were the ones who let the tolerance in.
Strangely enough there are a lot of countries who follow Gods teachings a little closer who don't appear to have as much of a problem violent crime, not that they are right most of the time.
What can be done to change the way things are going? A continued process after a period of severe and drastic change.

Asked to give his name as he stood in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London, Thomas Mair replied: "My name is death to traitors, freedom for Britain."

The 52-year-old refused to give his correct name to the court and remained silent when asked his address and date of birth.
