It was such a contrast with Angelus.
In the cage he's this psychological Hannibal Lector esq villain who tricks Gunn into revealing the murder of the Professor.
Out the cage he's an idiot who literally spends his time either boasting at the bar or like you say doing stupid things. Like how did he not know what Faith was trying to do when she swung those mental chains it was obvious.
 
Re: B-1: Oh, it's a fine season, it's just hard to compare to other seasons. It has minimal long term storytelling. The production clearly lacks the confidence to take risks in writing, acting and directing. It's villains are stock characters with a 90s coat of paint, and it's setting is clearly high school. It's fine, it's just hard to compare with what they were trying to accomplish later. It's clearly a proof of concept, and developing a metric where Season 6 is better because of the acting and production values doesn't really work.

t's not a bad film, but it's like one of those Evil Dead films that were made by students with the ones that were produced by studios.
 
For Angel Sesson 1 they did change what the show was about. Originally it was a monster of the week that Angel fights and victim of the week that Angel saves show. Its amazing in those earlier episodes, how many were good looking women too.
Joss Whedon said It wasn't until Eternity that he got it and they were making it about Angel and more serialised rather than anthologies.

I will say this, the show worked better with a smaller cast.

A smaller cast does allow you to focus more on the individuals and the show had what, three main characters to begin with? Angel, Cordelia and Doyle?

Yep then Doyle was replaced with Wes. But it still worked. They made Gunn a regular in S2 but while JAR is a good actor he had nothing do and they could've kept him reoccurring at not missed anything. Then they brought in Fred then Lorne then Connor it got really bloated. Then Spike in S5 and even Harmony could you believe it.
 
Re: A-1; I do understand and agree with Season 1 being an episodic detective series, and being distinct from the next three seasons. But, A-1 doesn't feel like a student film. The people who made it knew what they were doing in a way B-1 didn't.

I mean, most Power Rangers fans seem comfortable with comparing seasons, and every post Zordon Power Rangers season is completely different from the last one.

From a business perspective, the WB/CW model of television puts emphasis on the ensemble cast. A lot of the show's revenue comes from modeling clothing, pretty young people and product placement, so having characters who don't dress like Frankenstein or are under 30 is a good idea.
 
Weirdly I always thought Angel S1 had a clear goal right from the off; it was to deconstruct every aspect of Angel and his persona that had already been established on Buffy,

It was also to give him multiple 'easy' outs from his vampire limitations (giving him a magic ring that would make him an invincible daywalker, giving him actual humanity and a future with Buffy, etc) and for him to reject them as thinking himself unworthy. At the end of the season Angel is told that he will eventually be given the thing he obviously wants; forgiveness, absolution, a return to humanity, when he has earned it.

Buffy S1 is good enough for what it is; introducing us to a strong cast and giving Buffy a nice arc of accepting her heroic journey.

You can do quite well, story wise (ignoring the business perspective @AlphaFoxtrot mentioned) with a small main cast and a much larger group of recurring characters. Lorne, much as I like him, worked perfectly well as a recurring character and Kate did as well, at least until her character was ruined after the death of her father (which might have been because they knew she was leaving). Having them, Gunn, Spike and more as recurring characters might have been a better idea.

Iv always thought Kate was the best love interest for the show that Angel never had.
How much notice did they have cause it was very abrupt. Like her suicide attempt in Epiphany is stopped by Angel pouring some water on her head. They have a chat and that's it.

I don't know how much notice they did have, but I did wonder if they were given enough to damage Kate as a character. Although I guess it is possible that she was originally planned to come back around again, only to have the arc truncated because she left.
 
I liked Kate as a main character - sadly "Angel" could never compete with a blockbuster like "law and order" - apart from putting her on a major stage; i suspect it paid a lot better too.

I do wish we had seen her again even as a guest star. I might be mistaken but I think L&O is one of the few shows that actually filmed mostly in NYC - so the actor likely relocated there. And they might have had an exclusivity clause in her contract. Who knows? Good thing we have fanfic!!
 
Actually I would think there's a fair amount of people who would say S5 for Buffy. Over the years its only gone up in reputation I'm guessing, but I know people tend to have the most love for the High School years.

I'd go S3 for Angel. To me its the most consistent. S2 was a strong season, but did lose its way a bit in the second half after they randomally dropped the Dru-Darla stuff.
Holtz is a wonderfully complex villain in S3 and it has 4 or 5 of the best episodes of the whole show. A gripping season finale too. There was great stuff in the last two seasons, but it was never quite as consistently good again IMO.
 
Point of clarification, I agree, for creative reasons, with keeping the cast small and the emphasis on Angel. Characters like Gunn and Lorne would work a lot better when they have their own lives and businesses going on, as opposed to another resident of Angel's hotel. It also made the series seem less insular.

While I disagree with about season 3 I do agree about dropping Darla/Dru in S2 for the Pylea arc in season 2 being bad

Tim Minear did an interview with Passion of the nerd, which Iv linked in the past, and Tim said that although the excuse of JB availability was put out the real reason was that Joss was bored with the Darla arc and wanted to do Pylea instead.
