By definition, every religion is a cult. By a narrower definition, Mormonism is a cult of Christianity (they borrowed some of the fundamental beliefs, then spun off in a RADICALLY different direction but still consider themselves Christian). I guess the question is, when does a religion become "mainstream" enough not to be considered a cult anymore, but its own religion? Christianity was a cult of Judaism for several hundred years. Now it's its own thing. I think my cutoff point would be when the "cult" stops identifying itself as a part of the parent religion--which would, unfortunately, still put Mormonism squarely in the "cult" definition. (This is, of course, only my opinion and in no way definitively defines anything.)

Whether the authorities were right, wrong, or indifferent, the whole thing is going to be a circus in court with the defense having over a hundred separate lawyers. It will undoubtedly drag on for years, during which time the children will probably be in foster homes, then there will most certainly be law suits against the local government, and the news media will have a field day.

About the only good thing that can be said is, at least it didn't end up like Waco.
