Ok, it's 90 degrees everyday and I'm about to melt into a little puddle on the floor. I've brought my air conditioner into my room and got it hooked up all by myself. I only broke 3 bones this time. Now, the only thing I need to keep cool is my pool! My Dad doesn't want to open it for another 3 weeks and I don't feel like waiting that long. I'm going to take the initiative and get off my ass and so something on my own. So, I have the pool cover off and that....machine....thingy.....hooked up. As you can see, I don't even know the words for the parts of the pool and stuff like that. I know that before I take my first dive, I have to put chemicals like chlorine and stuff in there. I don't know what to buy and how much to put in. I thought I'd ask people here for help so it doesn't turn out like a radioactive container of goo that gives me metahuman abilities. So...does anyone know anything about how to get a pool going? Any knowledgable adults know?

Ok, first you need to get the water in balance. Chlorine should be between 1.5 and 3.0 parts per million (ppm). You should have a test kit for that...if not, get to the chemical store and pick one up! Most places have test strips that are about 2 bucks and do both pH and chlorine. Your pH should be 6.8 or so...and if it isn't it should be on the acidic side, 6.5 or so. Any lower, and your liner gets eaten...If you can get an analysis of the water done, they'll give you a rundown on the hardness of the water, mineral content, etc and if they are any good at the store, they'll tell you what you need. This part is less critical, but do it within a week of opening. More importantly, you will need some kind of initiator that blasts algae and such out that is hanging around after winter. If you can get the pump running, that's half the battle. Either plug it in, or turn on the switch...don't know which you have...Make sure you remove any plugs, etc in the skimmer (the thingy on the deck that has a basket that picks up leaves, grass and all the dead bugs...ick) first. Open the top and take 'em out...they'll be easy to see. Put the lid on the pump so that no water leaks, and let it run. You can never go wrong with too much chlorine at opening...just keep an eye on it, and add when it falls to less than 1.5 to 1.0 ppm.

Or do wat my dad does! Pay's a person to do it for ya!!! We have a pool at my house that is open all year round (its heated in the winter) and this guy comes every sunday and does the chemicals in the pool and hot tub and stuff in the garage that has to do with our pool lol!
