I expected to see some report or other about the type of Rhino that will be extinct soon as only two female exist, the last male of them died a day or two ago.

The BBC reported on it yesterday...the last Northern White Rhino male (Sudan) was euthanised on Monday because he was so ill. The sub-species' only chance of survival lies in scientific intervention i.e. IVF as he left (ahem!) "samples" and there are two females left alive - his daughter and granddaughter.
A shameful reflection on humanity that these wonderful beasts are on the very edge of extinction because some traditional (quack!) medicines believe their horns have magic powers!

Sorry to see another species approach extinction. The rhinoceros is mentioned in the Bible but in the King James Version it is called a unicorn. In the New International Version, it is mistranslated a wild ox.

Numbers 23:22 King James Version (KJV)
22 God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.

Numbers 24:8
God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.

Deuteronomy 33:17
His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.

Job 39:9
Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?

Job 39:10
Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?

Psalm 22:21
Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.

Psalm 29:6
He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.

Psalm 92:10
But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.

Isaiah 34:7
And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness.

Humans are indeed the most awful creatures. I read this on the BBC website yesterday. 🙁 It sickens me that we (the human race) have caused the almost-extinction of such a beautiful species (and many many others).

Surely the fact that the only Northern White Rhino lineage is one family means that there could be genetic issues further down the line, should they be able to produce more white rhinos via IVF through his daughter/granddaughter? I mean, there's a reason why we don't want blood relatives to procreate with each other....

I think they've been harvesting sperm from Northern White Rhinos for many years now from males that were alive then, so it's likely they do have stocks with some genetic variation.

I was very upset when I saw the news report yesterday. It's absolutely sickening what humans have done to the natural world and it makes me furious to think that there is still such high demand for this stuff for reasons that are just nonsensical.

Technically, they're considered extinct already. The only hope for their species is currently stored in a fertility lab, awaiting attempted IVF with the tissue that has been collected from the last survivors of both genders.

Sadly, our deeper problem is the venality of humans. We've let the planet go to hell, taking a large portion of the beautiful and unique creatures with it. And the evil bastards who kill them for sport and profit. They should burn in hell. The planet I was born into a mere half a century ago, was teeming with beautiful creatures... amazing flora and fauna... so much of it is gone for ever, and so much of what is left is in jeopardy.

All in one word. GREED.
