This has been bugging me today for some weird reason and I thought I'd bring it up with my fellow Buffy-over-analyzers.

In "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date," Andrew Borba (the vamp they think is the Anointed) is running around babbling like a madman. But most of the babblings make some sort of sense--they're references to the Bible or hymns, etc. The one I don't get is "pork and beans."

What the heck was he talking about? Was it just the nonsensical ravings of a lunatic mind? Or did it actually mean something?

(I've got a theory, but I'll let you guys tell me what you think first.)

I was going to say that, but don't they eat meat if it's been blessed by a rabbi?

Beans are amazing.

For years, I too thought that "pork & beans" line was very peculiar.
I thought that it was an Aliens reference. I vaguely remember a scene where the Space Marines shout something like that just before they file into the armoured transport vehicle. I'll have to go back and check. How or why that would be relevant I've no inkling. Curiouser and curiouser...

Think maybe it's got something to do with this? (Go to 2:45)

I don't care what it's a reference to... But the first time and now every time I watch that episode, I crack up laughing at him saying that 'cause it seems so random and funny!
Plus it's fun to imitate him in front of non Buffy fans and watch their reaction when you start chanting "Pork and beans!"

And no, I'm not posting drunk. 'Cause that would be innapropriate!

My initial thought was that he was off his nutt.

I think that deep down, this vampire has conflicting sums to all of his whole, at the very least I suspect his ability to derive Biblical lore and the Bible and Jesus not eating pork may be giving him too much credit by the way in which he acts and the way he has his own personal prophecy that seems to be revolving round his head before he was turned. I think he heard his own messages at sunday mass and it was tuned to a different frequency than his father/preacher.

I think he had a strong driven persona and the demon didn't fully evict it, that a bit of the mad man soul remained that the vampire could not evict, so early in the turning before a battle of wills could start, it worked with what it had and gave him some ley way with what he believed were absolutes...from his faith to his common/favorite meal?

Maybe when your nuts like drusilla and this guy, your soul is corrupted and you hang on to it somehow? I don't know, but this seems to be what instance suggests as far as Joss vamp lore goes by what it provides in example.

He was, by my guess, calling them something he ate alot in his life, Pork and beans. His mortal self is either mad enough or strong enough to hold on to his mortal souls memories and actions that he retains something like a soul, he is dismayed when he is burnt by a cross. If a vamp was in the driver seat completely, why would it bother with things rooted in faith and forgiveness. Why would it even bother questioning instead of just taking note of what hurts and what doesnt. The memeories are a tool to the vampire, not what totally defines it?

I don't believe that in this case the memories are a tool for the vamp, so much as they are directing the vamp. The demon seems not to be in charge of the hybrid, it seems more of a by-brid. That, like William and his need for love that steered Spike to some odd results...(like seeking out a soul)...this memory/soul imprint or need impressioned this vampire into spouting nonsense and wondering why crosses hurt.

Madness seems a dire need for something, something that can maybe buck the demons sway on the hybrid (after all Drue was mad, not the thing that took over for her)

Perhaps thats why Angelus was such a perfect monster. LLiam did not want acceptance from his father, only to punish him for never asking what 'he' wanted. he started out a gready, debaucherate, a prodigal son who was not welcomed back.

What better host for Angelus to take the reigns complete?

Jesus was Jewish; they don't eat pork.
Since he did the whole "this is my body, this is my blood" symbolism at Last Supper - which is, above and beyond the cannibalist notion, about as un-kosher as it gets - I'm not sure Jesus cared too much about the Jewish food laws.

The only Jewish laws he didn't care about were the ones that the Pharisees had made up. The no-pork rule was handed down straight from God to Moses (you know, theoretically), and Jesus would have kept to it.

The body/blood thing was symbolic, anyway.

Of course I agree it was symbolic. My point is that it's a kind of symbolism that would scare the hell out of anyone adhering to the rules of kosher eating. Drinking blood is, if anything, way more un-kosher than eating pork (the entire concept of kosher butchery is based on avoiding any blood to remain in the meat), and that's a rule strait from the ancient Mosaic Law too, so, theoretically, also made by God Himself.

"Drink this, it is my blood" is as much a sacrilege to say according to the Torah as "behold this statue, that's how God looks like". 😉

Very true. :)
The English have their Bangers and mash, maybe he was trying to compete with them by starting the American Pork and beans.

Oh and by the way you are going on about it, so he was successful.

Not that its got anything to do with this thread, but Jesus being Jewish had little to do with him not eating pork. Jesus in fact, could very well have been the first Jew to legitimately eat pork. Mark 7:18-19.

good point, backed up with a bible quote. /me likes.
To be honest, I never really listened to any of his ramblings.
It kind of annoyed me lol.
The only thing that I hear everytime is "You will be judged" and then when he becomes a vampire "I have been judged"
Haha
