Swedish chain Scandic Hotels has come up with a brilliant new concept: a room to go!Scandic To Go is a suite that can travel to almost any Scandinavian location.

The mobile room is just 18 square metres in area, yet has two beds and a sofa that converts into a bed for one adult or two kids. It comes with free WiFi, and a beautifully decorated bathroom, complete with bathrobes and designer toiletries.

So far Scandic To Go has gone to more than 40 locations throughout Scandinavia, and can be plugged into a local grid or hooked up to a generator if you want to venture to the wilderness.

A night spent in the portable hotel, with breakfast included, costs $AU412.

Looks like a container you would see on a ship but maybe a little smaller. Do you actually have the freedom to put these things anywhere you would want to go? Putting it on the sidelines in a sports arena as shown in the last picture may have some appeal but can they actually do it? The price seems a little steep unless the cost of transport is included.

What I understand about Swedish law (correct me if I'm wrong, Taake) is that no one can own property in Sweden, you can only get a 99-year lease on the land. But I'm sure there are restrictions on where these things can go.

Using these for storage is quite common where I live. They're relatively inexpensive, very sturdy, and, obviously, portable.

And totally limited only by your imagination

Ok, I get what some of our laws may seem strange to you (guessing you're talking about Allemansrätten The Right of Public Access) but no, you can't put something like this anywhere you want without permission. Although, not like I'm an expert or anything.

No, you couldn't put it anywhere you want. The Right of Public Access is of a non-intrusive kind, you as an individual could camp for a night on someone's land, but you can't stay there for like a week and special rules apply to vehicles... To put a portable hotel of that kind somewhere you would need the landowner's permission, and if it's under state ownership it would probably be the permission of the specific municipality or county you have to seek. Being allowed to move freely over lands does not include settlements 😉

Doesn't seem like a good business venture to me... why would you pay that much for a "portable" room when you could get a tent, RV, caravan or rent a cabin if you want to travel around and see nature etc... If you're a nature person why would you want a hotel? And if you're a hotel person why would you want to go anywhere in nature? Seems to me like it would cost even more to put it on an arena and I'm not sure why you'd want to have it there anyway... something for people with too much money.

The ground owner would have to approve placement, of course. We do have a long running tradition here (particularly in Norway, I am not 100% sure of the other Nordic countries), called "allemannsretten", that allows hikers to put up a tent for a few nights in a forest, by the coastline or up in the mountains. You cannot put it up in someone's yard, field or garden, of course, you need to be far enough away not to be a disturbance. That goes for tenting, hiking, lighting a fire, though. A container construction like what we see here would need some sort of permission.
