I was rewatching the episode Potential, when Dawn is mistakenly marked as a potential slayer. Later in the episode, we find the potential is Amanda. But, technically, isn't Dawn a potential slayer, too? In season five's The Gift, when Buffy is explaining how the monks made Dawn, she says that they made Dawn out of Buffy. So wouldn't Dawn have Buffy in her? Wouldn't Dawn have slayer in her?

they dont continue talking they just posted a thread and then left it, he didnt really talk about what people said, i just didnt like that, thats all really
Nah she's a sister, not a slayer clone. Think of the phrase "Blood relative". I sometimes wonder if "Sister" is accurate though. Wouldn't Dawn be more like Buffy's daughter?

It was pointed out that Buffy and Dawn share the same "blood". So they do have some physical traits in common. They are not, however, identical. Whatever trait it is that allowed for Buffy to become a Slayer may not have been reproduced in Dawn. That is even assuming that it is a physical trait that makes someone a Potential. It could be mystical or spiritual, in which case there would be no reason to think that Dawn would be eligible.

But I thought there was something that said that only another slayer will be called if Faith and Dawn are killed. Myabe I just imagined that.

But basically, you're saying that even though Dawn shared Buff's blood, that whatever decides a Slayer/nonSlayer fate, stepped in and said NO to Dawn being Chosen?

Yup.

Nope. Just Faith had to die.

I have argued the case that Dawn was Buffy's daughter time and time again but people just say she was made from her into a sister and that Dawn doesn't really have a mom.

If they make you out of someone they are your mom... Dawn should have been a potential because her and Buffy shared the same blood, with Buffy's training Dawn could fight and pretty darn well.

As bad as it sounds I guess awn was more like a Buffy's daughter..Strange...And yes blood didn't transfer that 'Slayer thing' to her...

Everyone keeps saying the blood thing but it *was* mystical. Joyce wasn't a Slayer...the Slayers aren't related by blood, remember, it was that demon-dust thingy that created the First Slayer, so it's reasonable to assume that the powers of the Slayer are passed through a demonic essence of some kind, not blood.

Daughter? No. That would suggest a genetic parental relationship. In order to be Buffy's "daughter" she would have to possess half of Buffy's DNA and half of someone elses. If she was made directly from Buffy then that wouldn't be the case, it would in fact be more like cloning (with a few alterations mystically introduced into the mix to create some variations from the template DNA). A clone is essentially, from a genetic stand point, what an identical twin is.

So, the closest term you could use to describe Dawn's relationship to Buffy would be sister. Also, since Buffy's DNA is composed of Hank and Joyce Summers' DNA, and Dawn is made from Buffy's, that would make Dawn the product of Hank and Joyce's DNA as well. So she'd pretty much be their daughter.

So...

Buffy = Sister
Joyce = Mother
Hank = Father
Andrew = Annoying (just thought I'd throw that one in there)

I always thought of it more like divine conception, as in Christ is the son of Mary.

Depends on the religion. Some just view Mary as a vessel, with Christ being solely the son of God. Mary doesn't factor in.

'Sides, Mary gave birth to Jesus, hence she could be concidered the mother of Christ. Buffy didn't pop Dawn out... I think I would have remembered that episode. There was no divine or mystical impregnation.

It's more logical to assume mystical cloning, particularly since that was the goal. The monk told us they made Dawn Buffy's sister.

yes, i think you're right because there was an ep witch buffy says something like "the monks made dawn out of me"..

Well yeah mystical cloning, of course, that's more accurate.

I'm just saying Dawn/Buffy - mystically cloned sisters. Feels more like mystically cloned Mother/daughter in that Buffy was the host.

It's just a question of interpretation. More like opinion, really.

If you want to get technical, the whole operation isn't even possible, as far as I know 😉

I always felt like blood should have something to do with it. Slayers blood is special, unique. I always felt Dawn had a Slayer in her somewhere.

During 'Potiential' I was screaming at the screen, "What about the blood? IT'S ALWAYS BLOOD! GIVE ME SOME BLOOD!" So when Anya made that comment I felt strangely justified.

I'm not going to go into whether Dawn could be Buffy's daughter or not, [although, I think that's a valid opinion. Very nifty] but I always felt like the fact that the monks made Dawn out of Buffy's blood connected her to the Slayer line. I'm not sure how, but I felt like it at least should. I mean, that would just be...cool.
