Power girl (DC)

Hey!

Does anyone else read power girl? I'm about to start reading the first issue from july 2009 and I'm really excited! I would love to talk about it with someone after I've gotten into it!

I read it back when Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Connor were the creative team, but I haven't been keeping up with it since they left. Back when they were on the book I loved it - it was one of the most fun DC titles on the market.

I've been reading it since the start.

I really, really loved the first 12 issues with Palmiotti, Gray and Conner. Really fun to read. I didn't have much optimism for the Judd Winick run, but surprisingly I've been enjoying it quite a bit. I don't really care about the DC Universe in general, and prefer to see Power Girl doing her own thing, but it's been OK so far.

I read the first issue last night and liked it. I think it has potential! Although I'm not looking forward to issue 13, I really like the art and the script now and cant understand why the original team left. Does anyone know? Nice to know that you have been enjoying it after that though AC, so there's hope 🙂

Amanda Conner is a very in-demand artist, so I guess she just wanted to move on after spending a whole year on one book. Its sales were kind of low, and I suspect the thinking was that people wanted stories more connected to the main DC Universe than just Power Girl off doing her own thing.

That's not the way I feel, but unfortunately it's the way the hardcore superhero fans think.

You always seem to know stuff, I like that! 🙂 Doesn't really make sense to reason that way to me, wasn't the whole point of Power girl that she SHOULD do things on her own? 🙂 I'm new to the comic thing so I don't really know what superhero fans are like though 🙂 But I'm guessing you mean they wanted Power girl to be about JL more? Is it that way after #12?

This Year's Girl agrees: Sounds promising! What else do you read from DC? Can you recommend anything?

Yes I can! These are just a few recs to get you started - some of them are older and some of them are still running. Also, keep in mind that they're mostly a matter of my personal preference:

• Batwoman: Elegy by Greg Rucka and JH Williams III (it's just one hardcover, but it's a must-read).
• Birds of Prey by Gail Simone. Volume 1 starts with "Like Minds" and ends with "Dead Winter" (you can find all of the trades in order on Amazon or Comicvine) and volume 2 starts with "Endrun," although vol. 2 is still only 8 issues in and you can probably find the individual issues pretty easily.
• Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka. This is my personal favorite Wonder Woman run, although I did really like Gail Simone's and George Perez's is a classic. Here's the order: "The Hiketeia" (this one's a self-contained graphic novel and you can really read it any time, I just think it's a good start if you want to know what his Wonder Woman's all about), "Down to Earth," "Bitter Rivals," "Eyes of the Gorgon" (EotG is pretty much classic Wondy at this point, so if you only want to get one trade go with that one), "Land of the Dead," and "Mission's End").
• Secret Six by Gail Simone (starts with the trade "Unhinged" - once again, you can find the rest in order on Amazon or Comicvine).

Also, if you're interested in expanding your reaches outside the superhero scene, here are some titles from DC's off-shoots, Vertigo and Wildstorm. To be completely honest, I like Vertigo a LOT more than DC proper, but again, that's just my taste.

• The Sandman by Neil Gaiman (starts with "Preludes and Nocturnes", although if you're willing to shell out around $60 you can get "Absolute Sandman," which comes with all of the trades).
• Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan (starts with "Unmanned").
• Promethea by Alan Moore (you can get Books 1-5 in trade, although like with Sandman, you can get "Absolute Promethea" if you're willing to risk it and buy it all at once).
• Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughan (starts with "The First Hundred Days").

Yeah, she interacts more with the others now. The first 12 issues were all about her going out on her own, fighting bad guys and starting her own company, and being BFF with Terra. Now she's more of a team player.
