Question Premeditation of Angel and the Comics?

Just how far back did Joss Whedon have Angel planned, and for that matter, the season 8 and 6 comics? Was there any foreshadowing, for example, of the events in Angel from the first 3 seasons of Buffy?

I don't think so. Angel wasn't supposed to last that long on Buffy, let alone be the longest running character in the verse. Originally he would stay dead after S2 but Joss saw that DB could carry a show of his own with his performance in I Only Have Eyes For You, so plans to make Angel the Series began then.

I think that Angel was an unknown factor in Season 1. He wasn't even supposed to be a vampire, originally, but by Season 3 he had developed enough and gained a big enough fan base to let him have his own show. I think that Joss started setting that up in Season 2 and beefed the character up enough that he could carry his own show.

As for the comics, I've read several places where Joss had Season 6 worked out for the show before it was canceled, and I'm sure that quite a lot of his plans were incorporated into the "After The Fall" arc. Beyond that, not so much.
