Hello all!

I'm new here. I'm Leila and I'm from Europe. I used to watch Buffy ten years ago when I was just a teenager, and only recently started watching it again.

I registered because I have a bit of a question (and I'm not sure where to post it >.<). Like I just said I recently started re-watching the series from the beginning. The thing is that ten years ago I stopped watching the show after really disliking season 4. I'm currently mid-way through season 3 and I enjoy it just as much as I did ten years ago, but I'm not sure if I should continue on to the rest of the series. I'm also undecided about whether I should give Angel another go. When I was younger, I only saw about 7-8 episodes of the first season of Angel, and I wasn't a big fan of it. Having read a little bit on the internet about the latter seasons of both shows, there's some developments in the plot I'm not sure I want to see. Like the idea of Buffy/Spike, Angel/Cordelia, and Angel having a son seem extremely bizarre too me, given the events of season 3. I'm not a shipper of any kind, but back in the day I enjoyed the whole "packaged" that was Buffy: meaning all the characters being united in one show, acting like themselves.

What I'm trying to say is that I'm torn between watching all of Buffy and Angel, or just the crossover episodes and both series finale (just to get closure). What would you advise me to do? I realize this is a bit of a strange introduction post, but I thought this forum would be the best place to ask this question. 🙂

Hi and welcome!
Ok I will advise based on my experience. My first Buffy watch, I wasn't crazy about season 4 either. I actually hated it at one time. Now I have grown to love it just as I love the rest of the seasons for its own reasons, although I still consider it to be the weakest of all seasons, in my opinion. Definitly continue because season 5 is AMAZING (again, my opinion.)
As for Angel, try your best to grit your teeth and bear thru the first half or even the entirety of season 1, because Angel just gets better. Season 2 and season 3 are incredible. As with Buffy, most find Angel's fourth season the weakest of the bunch, but 2,3,and 5 are awesome.

All this is my opinion. But I definitely think you should watch them all. For me, Buffy and Angel are my therapy when I need it. They both lift my spirits, make a boring day more interesting, and the subject of them never gets old. I would take the bad episodes of Buffy/Angel any day over a partial run of the show 🙂

Welcome to the boards! It's good having more people here.

The thing about Season 4 is, if you're prepared for the whiplash in tone (it does change quite a bit), it won't be that big of a deal, I don't think. I was prepared when I watched it for how much things change, and while it's not my favorite season (I rank it 5th), it has some really good parts. The main storyline is not that good, but some of the other episodes are amazing. There's a lot of good stuff in later seasons, too, and those things that seem odd (Buffy/Spike, Cordelia/Angel) are mostly covered by character development (seriously, the sheer amount of character development in the series is crazy). Connor is something else -- not a bad idea, but bad execution.

So, yeah, keep watching. There are some real high points later in the show, and you've barely watched half of it, it sounds like. Plus, even though it's my least favorite Joss show, Angel is still good. Season 1 is slow to start, but it does get quite a bit better.

But again, welcome to the forums, and keep watching Buffy. Get to the end.

Ooh I can definitely help! I had a very similar story.

I stopped watching the show, (as it was airing), when Joyce got sick. I just couldn't handle it. In addition to that, I was a junior in high school and going through my own stuff and I was WAY too cool for any tv show, like, ever. *Sigh.*

Then, for fun, I turned the show on when season 6 was airing to find Buffy and Spike boinking. Without any context to that at all, I panicked, felt disgusted, and turned it off.

A few years later I picked up with season 5 and just fell in love with the rest of the show. Now, my shippy feelings toward Buffy/Spike are fairly significant. (They're pretty much the only 'ship that I ship, at all). I love seasons 5-7, (though 7 has its annoying aspects).

I then decided to watch Angel because I cared about the characters and wanted more of them. I wanted to see what happened to them. I understand where you're coming from with Cordy/Angel and Connor because I, too, scoffed at those story lines until I watched them.

So, go for it! Watch it. Worst case, you'll wish you hadn't. But that is highly unlikely. I think even the fans on this board who detest seasons 6 and 7 of Buffy, detest Spuffy, and can't stand the thought of Cangel or Connor STILL don't regret watching the series. They want to know what happens to their beloved characters, (and are mildly interested in the fates of those they don't like).

Here's another way of looking at it: why wouldn't you watch? I mean, you know, take your time. But you've got very little to lose! These days, a bunch of Real Housewives franchises are competing for screen time; watch some quality Joss instead! (Oh and btw I am completely guilty of watching Real Housewives. The internet is a safe place to admit these things, right?)

Hi ya, welcome to the boards!

I think you should keep watching. Trust me, when I started out, I was registered on these boards when I was on Season 3, and I felt really conflicted when it came to the characters moving on and having new relationships. And I really mean that I completely hated Buffy being with Riley in S4. I'm a Buffy/Angel kinda guy, and its always going to stay that way.

Angel does start out slow, I remember that when I started watching it, I was a little bored because the show wasn't up to the same amount of steam that Buffy had. It gets better over time, Season 2 of Angel is probably, in my opinion, the best season, but the rest are still really good. S1 has some of the best crossovers 🙂

Hi Leila! I hope we get to see you again. Personally I think that you should watch all of both Buffy and Angel but it can't be denied that season 1-3 seems to the most popular "part" of both shows. I'm the opposite. Not that I think they're bad, the later seasons and Angel just appeal to me more.
