Here is a neat one page preview from the latest Diamond Previews catalog:

36prev.jpg

Note the 'Harmony' magazine cover next to Spike in the final panel - giving us an indication of timeframe for his panels. And also, someone on another forum pointed out that the dude sewing Twilight's costume seems to be the same guy who had Dawn when she was in doll-form.... Interesting.

So it looks like the Universe controlled Angel via schizophrenia... voices in his head he had to obey. Unless, of course, Angel usually obeys random mystery voices telling him to dress up like a Mexican wrestler and slaughter young girls.

Yeah, having birds talk to him certainly adds weight to the "Angel is crazy" theory.

Interesting that Spike recognizes him immediately, plus the fact that he appears to be in a berth on some kind of ship. Maybe he had finally decided that the time was right to look Buffy . Hopefully, he's not still working on the assumption that she's with the Immortal in Rome.

Maybe Illyria taught him how to do it. If she could talk to plants, birds should be a breeze, and since she seems to be back to full power since going to and returning from hell, that would be a simple solution. Then again, maybe all of that brooding and depression finally caught up with him.

Spike seems to be in a berth on a ship when he recognizes Angel, so maybe he had decided that the time was finally right to go look Buffy up before all of this crap started. If he still believed her to be in Rome with the Immortal, that would explain why it's taken all this time to track her down. Especially since W&H's special jets aren't at his disposal anymore.

That's his ship/vehicle/whatever... the one he crashes into Angel's HQ in the last issue. You can tell by the color scheme.

Maybe he's become a Timelord, that's his TARDIS, and the girl with the purple hair is his Companion.

This preview is just kinda funny, but I still find it odd that even Angel would find this a logical course of action. considering how badly his Black Thorn Plan went, but this Twilight thing is just a reboot on the Black Thorn Plan, and don't think he was forced at all. Also this thing is very similiar to Jasmine's plan, but so was the Black Thorn plan, so nothing new there(murdering innocents in the name of the greater good, violating free will with midswipes). I think this season is combining themes of old seasons(ATS 4 &5, BVS all seasons). Angel could still do something heroic in the end, and it seems like he is being used again as a puppet.

The drawing looks different?? They're like teenage boys here. Maybe it's because they want to mock Twilight? Spike really really looks like a hero here, while Twangel looks stupid. I'm so sad Angel have done all the bad things in S8.

The two covers

Buffy #36 at TFAW.com

don't seem to leave any doubt as to who the main attraction for the issue is, do they? As I've said before, I hope that Buffy and Spike are allowed some private time together to catch up on what has been going on since Sunnydale (and no, I absolutely do not mean any kind of sexual escapades. right on the heels of her acrobatics with Angel, that would just present Buffy as a total nympho slut which I'm certain that no one, regardless of which ship they favor, would want to happen)

Plus we will FINALLY get the question answered, once and for all, of whether or not Buffy was aware of Spike's return, and, if so, for how long she has known.

(My apologies for originally posting the incorrect web site above. Hopefully it's corrected now)

I have no problem with that; if you are going to compare and contrast, them compare and contrast!

It's just that I don't want Spike to have to put up with "Angel breath Buffy" again. Been there, done that. He deserves better than that this time, if there ever is, in fact, a "this time" for them.

I love Bangel & Spuffy & Spangel so I'm okay with her switching from one vamp to the other and back again

Yes - one of the reasons I started buying the comics was to get the answer to this question!!

Okay so I'm soooo wanting this issue that I'm reduced to doing a close reading on one page"¦ but it is an interesting one.

First Angel:
Angel is wandering around in a park and is hearing voices from random people (and animals).

"She has done something marvellous. But it will bring the world down on her. Her enemies will come at her from all side unless they stand beside you"

So Angel gets this task/mission from who? The universe? The PTB?

The mission is to galvanise and unify Buffy's enemies and stand as their figurehead. Ensure that attacks on the Slayer camp come from one direction only.

Angel goes to a tailor and has a costume made "“ the Twilight costume. The tailor tells him:

"There will be bloodshed. This is inevitable. But you can take her beyond the battle, to a world without war, without constraints. This is your true destiny. Focus her anger. Be the target of her power, and it will come to her. What she feels must be pure; she cannot be distracted by her feelings for you. Until it's time, she cannot know. No one can know."

Is the tailor just another voice"¦or is he somehow more involved. Is he the same tailor/toymaker as appeared in Living Doll? (#25) After having a close look, I'm not convinced"¦ but who knows.

Angel pulls on the mask, "˜becomes' Twilight. Yet again Angel is given a "˜Destiny' to follow and indeed, he is told that this is his "˜true destiny' "“ And the promise of Destiny is always something that Angel finds very hard to resist even if it is difficult and involves hurting Buffy (and others). He is a great advocate for doing something for the greater good. Plus the possibility of a "˜happy-ever-after' is dangled in front of him. You can hardly blame the guy for succumbing"¦except that historically speaking, these "˜destiny' things have not had a good track record with working out for him, so I can only wonder why he gets sucked in again. And the possibility that Buffy might not go along with the plan never seems to occur to him"¦

And Spike:

We find Spike having a smoke in Trafalgar Square watching a protest rally. The Twilight symbol appears on some placards. This is a pro-Twilight rally. A purple-haired girl explains that the twilight symbol is "a symbol of resistance" and that some of the Slayers victims had it on them. She explains that, "There's a secret sect fighting against the fascist slayer army and that's their leader's mark" She is also pro-vampire rights and wishes she could get bit.

This is happening sometime after Angel has adopted his new alter-ego and it is after he has successfully set himself up as the leader of the anti-slayer movement. Certain sectors of the public are clearly anti-slayer, so much so that they'll get out on the streets and rally in support of twilight and vampire rights. How much of this is created by Twilight's manipulation?

Spike, now that he knows about the anti-slayer sentiment gets on the case, hits the laptop and does some research. He finds the only known footage of the mysterious Twilight, filmed on a mobile phone over Edinburgh, I'm guessing at about the time Twilight and Buffy had a smack-down in A Beautiful Sunset (#11). Spike has a copy of Harm Magazine next to him on the bed (#21 "“ Harmonic Divergence), obviously reading about "˜Slayers: why they hate America' and other in-depth stories. Spike also reads OK magazine 🙂)). Despite Twilight's need for anonymity, Spike knows exactly who is behind the mask the minute his video footage finally loads.

And so we have to ask ourselves, why has it taken Spike so long to get in touch with Buffy and tell her the information?

And that's all we've got. What a tease! Is it September yet?

SPIKE! This is the most excited I've been about the comics since.... wait, this is the first time I've been excited about the comics.

Angel goes to a tailor and has a costume made – the Twilight costume. The tailor tells him:

There will be bloodshed. This is inevitable. But you can take her beyond the battle, to a world without war, without constraints. This is your true destiny. Focus her anger. Be the target of her power, and it will come to her. What she feels must be pure; she cannot be distracted by her feelings for you. Until it’s time, she cannot know. No one can know.”

Is the tailor just another voice…or is he somehow more involved. Is he the same tailor/toymaker as appeared in Living Doll? (#25) After having a close look, I’m not convinced… but who knows.

Looking back at the tailor, it just occurred to me just who he reminds me of: Guipetto, (?) the kindly old puppet maker who made Pinocchio, (at least the Walt Disney version) That would seem ironic, since, like the puppet, Angel's fondest wish is to "become a real boy" so that he can be with Buffy. And it's not the first time Angel has played this type of role. Remember Spike calling him a "wee little puppet boy in "Smile Time," when he was, in fact more of a doll than a puppet?

The similarity with the puppet might also apply to Angel here since it appears that someone else (his equivalent of a fairy god mother) may be either directing him on hie mission or actually pulling his strings, controlling his every move while deluding him into believing that he is, indeed, once more "acting with the greater good in mind," Angel's excuse whenever he meddles in or manipulates other people's lives to suit his own views of how things should play out (maybe that's what has happened every time that he's done that, throughout the entire series). That just might wind up being his "Get Out Of Jail Free" card for all of the harm that he's brought about through the entire season.

I wonder if Spike's mystery vehicle is going to be the equivalent of Monstro, the whale who swallowed Guipetto and Pinocchio.

And Twilight's symbol isn't really the setting sun, but the Wishing Star.

And Spike himself is Jimminy Cricket?

Or maybe this version (Doesn't she look a little like Buffy, or is it just my imagination?)

Interesting analysis, and its pretty common throughout ATS at some point Angel's character is a puppet, and BVS as well. It doesn't get any better which is one of the reasons I saw ATS 5, as a huge let down, and as far as the "greater good" excuse it doesn't work when someone is using for their own gain(W&H deal for Connor, still personal gain), which fits both into ATS 5, and this whole Twilight debacle. I have nothing against the character, but I think his get out of jail free cards should be up by now. I think season 9 will be a clash of ideologies as well as characters, since there were two different messages that could be interpreted from ATS5, and BVS 5. In ATS5, the murders of Drogyn and Lindsey were excused and casually just "whitewashed", but in BVS5, Giles murdering Ben for the greater good was made up to be what it was described by Giles in the scene, something a hero does not do, and something that is generally just Wrong, and there was a strong point, about how wrong it would have been to murder both Dawn and Ben. I don't think Angel is a hopeless character, but a fallen hero definitely, and one that has done a lot of good, so his character could still do something good in the end.

Good picture of Buffy, but why does she always have to look so sad? Just once, I would like to see her smile, or, dare I even hope for laughter?
I think self deception is a whole part of this whole Twilight thing. Remeber in ATS 5, Angel pretended to be evil like he is claiming now, but in order for he to get into Black Thorn, he betrayed and murdered a fellow champion, innocent, and friend. The mintue he did this, the whole pretend concept isn't so pretend anymore, he isn't pure evil, he's just another form I geuss grayish evil. Also he uses the whole were special excuse in justification of his actions, throughout the show, just like Connor did when helped kill the girl to give birth to Jasmine. So when he bascially killed the old Connor, not only did he give his son a new life, without his true memories, but from a big fat lie just like Jasmine herself, he also betrayed his friends by basically acting as if the whole reason they were there at W&H is to fight evil, and the mindswipe, his true sole reason for being there was to help Connor, not fighting evil. His character has a history of self deception, that even goes back to his name even, his human name is Liam not Angel, and Spike doesn't call his soulless self any differnt name like Spikeus. This whole self deception that his character has a lot to do with how he could have rationalized his pretending to be evil as Twilight, because either way that what he was, even if thought he was just pretending. Thats why the earlier versions come off more likable to me, because he's not in this whole self deception mentality. Although, you could even link Spike knowing its Angel back to School Hard season 2, when once again he pretended to be evil and it backfired.

"Hey! balls!"

LMFAO!

I stopped reading the IDW series when ATF ended so I'm slightly lost as to what war he lost or where he was just spit out of but this looks interesting. At the very least it is as ridiculous as Wesley believing a giant talking hamburger.
