Well it is Angel but under Twilight's thrall. It's definitely not Angelus though.

The more I come to think about it, the more I can definitely see this issue ending with the Seed being broken by the Betrayer (Xander I guess...). Then #40 could deal with the aftermath, calmly, of no magic left in the world. I really think that's what's going to happen, since someone said the Big Battle would happen in this issue and the next one would see the after effects...

Can the betrayer be Angel, or it's out of the question? Sorry if I sound silly, remember that I don't read the comics, so not following the whole "going on" thing.

Angel or Angelus betrayed pretty much everyone right from the start of season 8. Putting on the ridicilous costume was the worst. 🙂 So yeah it´s possible but imo it would be pretty lame. If it´s him we can´t blame him again because he is just possessed/under a thrall/influence of whatever and not responsible for his actions.

Ps: Angel has still the willpower of a muppet.

It seems there is always an excuse for characters to turn evil 😀
So I hope whoever the betrayer is, it will make sense, and won't be lame. Can happen very easily.

Yeah Spike thought so, seeing an evil Angel, but what Buffy meant was that it wasn't, it was something other than Angel or Angelus, that's to say Angel-under-Twilight's-thrall.

As for the betrayer, I thought when Twilight was first revealed that it was simply Angel, but after that (in #37 or #38 I think) Willow and the SnakeLady discuss the subject of the betrayer again, as if the betrayal hasn't happened yed. So it's still on... And it's most likely not Angel.

Even funnier is Spike's reply: "I'm fairly certain I never mentioned......"

Clearly a little nod to their much speculated sexual experimentation during their age of vampire decadence. XD

No, I don't think so. Betrayal implies a conscious decision to deceive. Angel appears to be incapable of that just now. We think it is going to be Giles or Xander.

I just can't help finding it a bit suspicious that whoever or whatever Twilight is, it seems to be forcing Angel to do things that he would have done of his own free will if he possibly could, primarily having sex Buffy without losing his soul, being the strongest fighter in the game again, and beating Spike up (remember, the last time we saw them fight, Spike, for the first time, was the winner, and Angel was more than a little dejected about it.) And Angel's never hesitated to make decisions affecting other people's lives, witness making the "gesture," and he himself admitted that it was little more than that, that got Wes killed, made Gunn a vampire, Lorne a murderer, Lindsey a corpse, and sent all of Los Angeles and its entire population, literally, straight to hell.

It sure looks like Angel and Twilight seem to share a lot of the same goals and use pretty much the same approach to getting what they want, Twilight just on a more grandiose scale. I'm beginning to think that the biggest difference between Twilight and Angel is that Angel is going to walk away from Season 8 whistling, while Twilight, just like Angelus several times in the past, takes all of the blame for everything bad that might have happened.

I don't hold Angel specifically responsible for what he's doing now, since he's clearly not in control of himself (once again). He made a very bad choice a while back, and it's the mistake that just keeps on giving.

This constant portrayal of Angel as a hapless doormat who keeps getting used and abused by every evil power that comes along is seriously damaging his character, though.

Not sure that "hapless doormat who keeps getting used and abused by every evil power" is the right description. There are people who believe in destiny. Angel is one of them. I don't excuse his actions, but I can understand where his determinism comes from.

I hope this arc will be crucial for his character. From now on he will stop to believe in higher purpose and listen to PTB. It could be an interesting story, a new chapter in his journey. Something writers didn't try before. I'm very curious how Joss plans to redeem him and to restore the Earth.

If you believe in destiny to the extent that you're willing to do things you know to be wrong in order to serve it, then I think "hapless doormat" is the most charitable of all the possible descriptions.

To believe in "destiny" in that way is to believe that human choice and free will is completely irrelevant. That, to me, is the exact opposite of heroism.

Does Angel really believe in destiny? IMO, almost all of AtS was a big screw you to the PTB after he realized certain things were out of his hands. Even if he believes that there are greater powers out there (mostly because yes, they've shown themselves time and time again), he's not the type to follow them blindly anymore.

I'm more interested in why Joss felt he had to take Angel this route at all. It doesn't make sense to me.

OK, I'm reading a Georges Jeanty interview on another forum, and he states that Faith will do something "really remarkable". Also when asked if Buffy will try to save Angel from Twilight's control, a la "rescue the prince" from issue 10, he states that issue 10 was indeed foreshadowing.

He also says about 39 that "It's big. And sad. And cathartic. And good."

Also, with the end of the season coming up, I wonder if we'll get a Joss interview? We get lots of Jeanty & Allie interviews & Q&As, but we've heard little from Joss himself. And hey- why can't we do a Joss interview here on Buffy-Boards? Why is it that the other forums get to do that, and we don't? [add pouty lip emoticon here]

I agree that to be the Betrayer basically implies that individual has conscientious control - which definitely excludes Angel at this point(because Twilight is in control, not Angel). So I still think the Betrayer will be Willow. She's the one it's been pointing to since issue #10.
