Profanity

I curse occasionally. I don't do it that much at home but I do it in school and around my friends a lot. Here in the boards, I don't like to swear because there are younger people here and it's kinda disrespectful anyway. I also don't like to swear in front of grown ups.
 
I swear only when I hurt myself which for me is all thetime cause I'm really clumsy like this morning I ran into our bench! who does that I ask you?
 
i use minor swear words such as damn or hell. otherwise, unless im being thoroughly annoyed by certain people, i keep it to a dull roar.
 
I do swear, but it doesnt really come natural. I use it to emphasise a point, but ultimately i put other words in instead of actual swear ones.
eg. Fraggle, Funk, Sugar...i just find that swearing is a lack of self discipline.
 
I swear and like others have said usually to emphasise a point, I would actually do the same as DDLM, replace swear words with other words, but for no particular reason, They way I was brought up, swearing was not that big of a deal so it kinda grows old.

I also really understand why people take offense to Swear words, I mean they only have power if you give them power!

I hear what you're saying. But, swear words have (or, had) social/emotional power. A society's not just a bunch of unrelated "you's". That's the thing. No single, individual "you" can create or destroy that power, IMO.

I can only look at this from my personal American perspective I guess. I'm starting to agree with these folks who think swear words are a good barometer of how sort of cohesive, unified a society is. It's like a reflection of a culture's values"”what it holds dear, or holds in contempt, or in awe. Whether it relates to God or sex or your mother or what have you. That's sort of exploded over the past 40 years. I think I agree that traditional swear words were more widely useful, powerful (as sort of a substitute for violence, or a way to vent anger or pain) when people agreed more on specific taboos and values.

Maybe it'll circle around again and some taboos will actually return. Or just keep evolving, like various forms of political correctness do. No idea...
 
I'm a bit blase about the whole swearing argument. I have a sailor's mouth if there ever was one for a 16 year old ... but I don't swear just to swear, because I find that a bit pretentious. There's always a reason for an appropriately placed swear word for me ...

I don't swear around me parents or other family members, however, because I'd get slapped in the face. Not because they'd be "offended" or whatever, they just don't want to hear anything like that come out of my mouth until I'm out of their house.

All in all, I don't have a problem with swearing. Maybe it's the decomposition of America, maybe it's not. I just don't really care. *shrug*
