Ok, this might seen kind of random, but I'm hoping you all can help. You've all been so awesome with helping me with my school projects before, so...

Ok, as a requirement for my job, I need to design a "display" of some sort. The aim/purpose of this display is to showcase what is available in the surrounding city in terms of arts and culture that students might be interested in.

I work in a "collegium" (basically a lounge or social living-room type space) for juniors and seniors here at my college who are transfer and commuter students. My job, in part, is to encourage and inspire the students to be engaged in extracurricular cultural activites outside of the classroom, respectively. Basically, to be interested in participating in events off-campus. So, I thought a good idea would be to make a display of such things as concert venues, art galleries, restaurants, theaters, etc that are located in the surrounding area, hoping to spark an interest.

Where I need your help is I honestly am not sure where to start with this. One, I'm not artistic AT ALL, (I can hardly draw an acceptable stick figure, lol) so the display can't involve me actually drawing anything. I know what idea I want to get across, just not how to actually execute it and make a nice-looking display.

Has anyone did anything like this in the past? Any help would be appreciated.

You dont necessarily have to; most word processing programs have shapes which you can insert, some are very detailed and specific, or you could go with a program like OmniGraffle or many similar ones.. worst case get a trial version, if you are low on funds to pay for it. 30 days is a long time to use the program for free.

Depending on what city you live in or near, but there is usually a film and television training place, see if they have a e-mail newsletter. There may be several theatres that hold arty-farty seminars or displays, somewhere like that may be interested to have their program known at your uni / college plus they may have other contacts for you to contact with regards to your newsletter/ display.
It may also be of use to you to see if there are any record publishing companys; they may appreciate somewhere else to notify who is playing where, a mutually beneficial arrangement?

Dont know if this will actually help, but I (as a student) am actually attracted to simple but bright displays (maybe thats just my ADD kicking in lol). But if you know what you want to advertise and have a camera it always helps to show your students what it is they could be doing. Like say people attending a concert, and engaging in another sort of activity like playing a sport.
Maybe have a collage (of pictures taken by you) of the various activities you want to promote, a simple quote and some contact details.
