Since joining BB I thought it best to do some homework and do a total rerun of the DVD's. Last night I reached the end of season 1 with Prophecy giry. I noticed a couple of things one that cofused and the other that amused me:

Confused:
Xander visits Angel for help and brings a cross with him for protection, fair enough should would I if I were going to get tough with a vamp. Xander produces the cross and Angel shys away as vampires do.
Why? if I remember vampire lore, vampires only shy away from religious symbos such as the cross because they have no souls. Angel at this point has his soul, returned to him by the gypsy folk admittedly, but a soul none the less.

Amused:
Buffy had a beautiful dress for the dance and she looked great in it. But I would love some of that material it was made from. She goes into a dirty underground area, gets into fight and loses round 1 by being bitten, then drowned, lieing face and body down in the water. Then when Xander does the kiss of life she gets up and goes in for round 2 and pleased to say this delivers the knock out, bye bye Master:cheering:. But in all this mayem, fighting etc her dress does not get dirty, not even hem?

Doesn't it have something to do with belief? Cause remember in Angel, I want to say, Season 2? when Lilah pulls a cross on Angel it doesn't do anything...

I think so too. The Master says something to the effect that "he doesn't fear the cross" and indeed, he hardly gets burned when he touches it.

Well, in regards to the cross thing, vampires can be physically hurt by the crosses, hence why he shies away from it. Their skin will burn on contact. So, I don't think it's a psychological thing except symbolically. After Spike got his soul, his skin still burned on the cross in 'Beneath Me.' The absence or not of a soul has nothing to do with whether or not the vampire will be hurt my a cross.

I think that you and the others are probably right, because I've just remembered earlier in S1, Angel and Buffy were dancing and the cross that Buffy wore left its mark on him.

But where did he get the cross [because it is the same cross that he gave her in the first episode] and how did he select it etc, and then carry it around until the right moment? It was in a gift box but he could not have very comfy with on his person.

You answered your question yourself - he carried it around in a gift box. Vampires can be hurt by the cross, yes, but they don't have to shy away from it. There are a lot of instances where - especially older - vampires just slap the cross out of the carriers hand. I think it's mostly younger vampires who shy away from it
- Xander and Willow in "The Wish" come to mind -
, probably because they don't know yet that it only hurts on direct contact. Or something.
As to how he selected it - he could have gone to a jewellery store just after dawn, pointed out a cross and say "I want that one". Easy. He doesn't have to touch the cross at all. Why he was conveniently carrying it around at the time he first met Buffy though... *shrugs* I'd rather not think about that.

oOh interesting, don't think i've ever noticed that before, and if i have, it's slipped my mind.😛

He was looking for her to warn her about The Harvest, wasn't he?

The spotless dress thing in Prophecy Girl really bugs me too, glad I'm not the only one.

Everyone has already said what I wanted to say about the cross... The dress thing always irked me. I was like "She did all that and fell in nasty sewer water without getting dirty? WOW." LOL Maybe the dress always being white was supposed to be symbolic??

I noticed the dress wasn't dirty too.
Although her arms were, and her hair was all wet.

The cross thing, I never really paid any attention to Angel being burnt by it.
It doesn't bother me at all, it hurts them yes, but as seen in some episodes spike laying on the cross when he gets his soul back, it sizzles, but vampires are strong so they can tolerate a lot of pain.
