Puerto Rican Characters?

Justina Machado, who played the pregnant women Angel had to protect in "Judgement", is from Puerto Rico.
 
One or two minor ones only! And that's good! If there had been one main PR character, I would have got annoyed with all the loud talking. 😛😉














P.S: Tome wish he was a PR.

Aw, poor kennedy! I'm watching season 7 now in my re-watch and I'm trying really hard to see her with an open heart... I want to like her. I want to like everyone....

so, we'll see how it goes. so far, so good...just finished showtime. She sticks up for buffy and willow when the other potentials make doubting remarks...

and, she's quite pretty!
 
In Whedon shows...a couple minor characters although i'm not sure if they're playing PR but IRL they are. Television/film in general yes but still very few along with asian actors and other Latino groups.
 
Not in anything of joss's (I don't think) but rosario dawson is one totally kick ass PR chick!
 
Whenever someone says PR my first thought is Power Rangers

I love Justina Machado. Six Feet Under, anyone? Final Destiantion 2? Too bad her character didn't return in some capacity in Angel, even if her story was done for the time being.

The sad thing about Joss's shows is that there was not enough diversity in any of his casts. 🙁 This has been discussed before, and it's something I always personally really hated. I really loved the actors we have in these roles, but I don't think it would have killed him to cast other, more diverse, actors in the roles of some of the characters.
 
I agree it totally shouldn't be based on any sort of quota. I also think most casting directors don't seek out diversity as much as they could and i feel, should.

I agree, especially since both shows are set in freaking California! There's more diversity on Glee, a show set in the midwest. No I don't think there should be some quota, just a reflection of reality around them. I dunno, I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and for godssake I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma now, and there is more diversity in my circle & my workplace than that.

Although when this thread is referring to "Puerta Rican", are you referring to PRs specifically, or Hispanics as a whole? Because you'd be more likely to have Mexican-American characters in L.A. than say, in NY.

Lack of diversity isn't just an issue in Whedons shows, it's an issue in all of television.
If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the friend of Doogie Housetops Puerto Rican?

In California it would be more likely to have Mexican characters...NY then it would be PR...but I just don't ever seeing a PR quota...latino sure but not PR...next we'd start having Irish quotas, etc. Plus I don't think they planned on having drug dealers in the Buffy verse 😛

Now wait, being prejudiced against your own? Or are you referring to the IRish ROFL?!

My husband (who's from Boston) calls any Hispanic/Latino Spanish. As in "we grew up in the projects with Irish, blacks, and Spanish". I'm like WTH, it's the language! Then I get snippy: were they born in Spain? Ok then. But everyone I've met who he grew up with says the same thing. And I guess for them they grew up with as many Dominicans as PRs or Mexicans.

haha...I was joking on my own people not that the Irish are any better 😛 ....but seriously yeah lots of people just say "spanish people" but I don't use the term unless by mistake cause we all speak spanish...but we're not all spanish. Latin America is a very mixed people and culture and to just claim Spain is wrong in my eyes...same reason why I use Latino over Hispanic for tricky definition reasons but I won't get offended if someone called me any of those things.

I work with someone who was born in Zimbabwe but spent a lot of his life in South Africa and tends to refer to Afrikaans-speakers as Dutchmen.

Sadly the only Puerto Rican characters I can think of are in 'West Side Story', but as Mr Trick commented, wasn't half the point of Sunnydale that it was meant to be a white-bread town anyway? I'm just wondering how many non-white classmates Buffy has, because I can't remember many- you can say that some characters have a slightly more Latino colouring than others, but one of the interesting things about the casting of Willow is that they eventually went with an actress who has a skin and hair colouring more associated with Irish and Scottish ancestry rather than saying "this character is Jewish therefore we need to cast someone who looks Jewish"- or even just somebody with a Mediterranean appearance.
