In Graduation Day part one, Anya explains to Wes, Giles, Buffy and Xander that they had never seen a real demon, as all the ones that walk the earth are human hybrids. Now, I can kinda buy that. But in season one of Angel, we met the Scourge, who are all big on demon purity. We saw them use a weapon that would wipe out human genes, and none of them were harmed, and they were even prepared to detonate the weapon, affecting a quarter of a mile in radius. So, what's the deal with that? My take is that Anya was just wrong.

Hmm...good question, Wes. I think Anya had it right, but I would assume that the Scourge (and most other demons aside from vampires) are only a small part human - not enough to be affected by the human-squishing ray.

I don't think that's the case, as they said it would kill anything with human blood, and they were standing right next to a human who got vaporized, and weren't effected.

It was just something the writers wrote to make the big bad look even stronger. But looking back it is just wrong.

I'd say just a mistake. I believe Anya was right, but I'm not sure about the Scourge. I think that they just choose to forget things that fly in the face of other things.

I think that it's just a little bit of incontinuity. Thinking about it, there's also the example of (In Pylea) it being explained that the thing Angel turns into is the pure demon inside him, the vampire as it originally was.

A human hybrid could be a demon tainted by the human way of living. The demons on earth would have lived here for centuries, making them tamer than those real demons living in hell dimensions. So, even though demons such as the Scourge don't have any human blood in them, they are still not as pure as a demon from a hell dimension.

I agree with Jules, I'd say that most demons, to exist in our dimension, have to take on a vaguely humanoid shape, but not possess human genes.

See, I've had a problem with the whole "pure demon" thing all along. At first, I thought that the pure demons were the ones banished to the depths of the Hellmouth, like the ubervamps. I never really understood why Joss just didn't have the Mayor turn into a regular demon. You know, small steps....

Still, it's not as bad as the whole vengeance demon power source thing that was abandoned in "Selfless." That's probably the biggest inconsistency ever made by Joss.

You mean the way that Anyanka originally had to wear an amulet...but then in later seasons she didnt' have to...???

The Scourge may have been pure demons by earth standards, but when compared to demons from another dimension they would appear slightly tainted by the human way of living.

I think the Mayor was human before he was "pure" demon. So, I think if he was "pure" demon for longer then 10 mins, he would have lost his human feelings. Did that make any sense?

The mayor turned into a pure demon yes but emphasis on the TURNED, he is orignally human and we see that after some minutes of being a pure demon he starts to regain some control of himself he can even talk and he has emotions. The Mayor just had the body of a pure demon but not the mind.

What about the freaky Alien demons that we caught a glimpse of in The Gift(if you dont know what im talking about look at my sig) they looked freaky and do you think they might be considered pure demons?
