Quentin Tarantino's Next Film: The Hateful Eight - Anyone excited?

It's going to be a western. Apparently, Tarantino is eyeing Bruce Dern (Nebraska) and Christoph Waltz, who has won two Academy Awards for Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained, for two roles in the movie.

I love Quentin Tarantino...westerns, not so much. So I'm on the fence, I'm a bit excited for this, but I also may never see it, I'll wait to see what it looks like.

(This is off topic entirely, but please indulge me as I defend a personal hero)

John Wayne about Eastwood shooting someone in the back: "I don't care what that kid would do, I don't shoot 'em in the back."

John Wayne basically did exactly that to Lee Marvin in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence." More accurately, he shot him from an alley in order to save James Stewart. However, it has to be remembered that "The Shootist" was Wayne's last movie. Parts of the movie were done using stand ins while he was hospitalized. He was dying, and he knew it. His version of John Books was totally opposite from the character in the book of the same name. Wayne was leaving his final image, the last thing that the world would ever see of him, and this was the image that he wanted the world to remember when they thought of him: a man who, whether you liked him, hated him, or just didn't care, faced his final moments with courage and dignity. That was the man who wouldn't shoot anyone in the back.

Marion Michael Morrison was a man, with all the flaws and weaknesses of a man. John Wayne was a hero, a gentleman, a patriot, and a man whose personal code of honor would never allow him to shoot anyone, no matter how logical it might be to do so, in the back.

God bless John Wayne, and may God have mercy on Marion Michael Morrison.

Love Tarantino so I'm fully excited about Hateful 8.
I like a western if it's done well, for example, the tv series Deadwood. In fact, I really hope Quentin finds it in his heart & good sense to give Timothy Olyphant a role in his new flick, cause hot diggity that sure would be swell. (that was a kiwi girl doing bad southern hick)

I would fully expect any Tarantino movie to be violent, creepy and mean-spirited because that is what he generally does. The Hateful Eight certainly sounds like the title of a movie in this tradition. His body of work includes Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Death Proof / Grindhouse, Ingluorious Basterds and Django Unchained. I would expect the new movie to be in this tradition of attempting to elevate violence to an art form. It almost sounds like the title is a counterpoint to "The Magnificent Seven", a classic western based on "The Seven Samurai". I will probably watch it when it comes on cable, but movie prices in Canada are stratospheric - I haven't been to one in ages.

Learning today that his script The Hateful Eight leaked after he gave it to a small circle of actors, Quentin Tarantino tells me that he's so upset that he has decided that he will not direct that film next.

Quentin Tarantino drops Hateful Eight project after 'leak'

Oscar-winning director Quentin Tarantino has dropped his latest project, a Western called The Hateful Eight, after it apparently leaked out to Hollywood agents.

The filmmaker said he learned of the leak when his office started getting calls from agents pitching their acting clients for roles.

Speaking to film website Deadline, Tarantino said he only "gave it to six people".

He added he was "very, very depressed."

Tarantino, who won best original screenplay at last year's Oscars for Django Unchained, said: "I finished a script, a first draft, and I didn't mean to shoot it until next winter, a year from now."

The 50-year-old said he now plans to publish the script as a book and revisit the prospect of a movie after a few years.

The director told Deadline that he had given the script to three actors, including Tim Roth, who appeared in his first two films, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.

"The one I know didn't do this is Tim Roth," he said. "One of the others let their agent read it, and that agent has now passed it on to everyone in Hollywood."

Tarantino himself initially announced the project in November last year to US chat show host Jay Leno.

He has now said: "I'll publish it. I'm done. I'll move on to the next thing" but said he "could totally change my mind".

"If the muse calls me later to do it, we'll do it," he added.

Django Unchained was Tarantino's biggest ever box-office hit, earning $425m (£258m) worldwide and nominated for five Oscars.

Yes, he said that he has another script ready. Personally, I'm hoping it's a crime film, like his first three films. He also once mentioned that he'd like to do a gangster film set in the 30s. That sounds really interesting as well.

To me, this sounds like he might do it after his next project. But maybe not. I'd say The Hateful Eight's future is still uncertain.
