Ok so I remember in season 6 that dawn says "I'm not the Key anymore, or if I am I don't open anything" wasn't the whole thing in season 5 with the portal having to do with the alignment of stars or something like that? Maybe Glory wouldn't want to open the portal but there could be someone else that would want to use the key for something. any thoughts?

I love your username :)
I think that the alignment of the stars is one of those once every 5000 years things, so even if somebody wanted to open the portal they wouldn't have a chance as Dawn would have left this mortal coil many years before they had another chance.

Dawn was not the key, per se, as there was no lock to open; however, she still was the metaphysical representation of that, and still continues, albeit inactive (maybe, maybe not) to have the qualities of energy in the purest form.

As the Key, Dawn could never die, as energy never dies it just changes form.. who knows.. maybe a hundred years from now the Key will be a giant monkey! (hey, nerd.. that's for ya kid! 🙂

I don't get people who say; "Dawn is just human now, she's no key." That's just a theory. I myself won't stop believe she's the key until proven wrong.

After all, how can a such a power stop existing? Dawn is the key in human shape. If her essence were destroyed, would't her humaa shell vanish? And Dark Willow seemed to think that Dawn could still be made energy again, since she wanted to suck it out of her. And Wilow was such a powerful witch, so i assume she could feel it inside of dawn.

I think she's still the key, a force that can be used to open portals. But hopefully she won't be able to open anything again because A) No one knows about her or B) the stars or whatever that has to be in place won't ever be again.

But who knows. Maybe after dawn dies(let's assume she can) the key energy will go into the universe, on another plane of existance if you will, and one day will be used again.

About Dawn saying she's no longer the key;

Maybe she thinks that she's just human now, or, since she thinks she won't open anything, that she doesn't count as a key anymore. Or maybe she's in denial.

No one knows for sure what Dawn is so to make proclamations one way or t'other is quite absurd.

All we do know definitely is she was created by monks who transformed a mystical key to human form using Summers Blood, plus that of a Slayer no less.
She didn't exist in this form before season 5 then was 'born' a teenager.

She has the ability to open a rift to the world Glory is from and the most recnt time that was possible se actually did, but it was stopped by someone elses sacrifice.

She is still the key.

A house key is still a key even if you change the door, even if it is a little redundant.

But is all of dawn the key, or just her Blood? I was always confused by this. If Buffy death, and thus her blood flowing no more could act like a spare key so to speak, what does that make her?
I've never really considered it untill now, but the blood letting ritual of the key was what activated the gate, and prophecy said it would only close when the blood flowed no more.... as it turned out, after Buffys heart stopped; after she jumped through the rift and was killed by the energy or maybe the fall (better said landing i guess.)

Do you think that could make Buffy or her father a spare key of sorts or just a means for alternate prophecy fullfillment with the whole 'Summer's blood' thing?

I'm thinking they are not spares. I understand Dawn is the key, as well as the monks made it/her mortal, gave it/her human shape, and remolded it/her in the form of Buffy's sister. I understand that her blood letting and then flowing is in essence turning the tumblers, but the Blood is what Dawn shares with Buffy and her Dad, not the whole nature of the being the key...at least if I'm understanding this right.

I'm curious if I am understanding it correctly. I always loved The Gift...not necessarily understood it for certain, but have loved it. If Summers Blood not flowing anymore acted as the seal, why did the rift close? Dawn is still alive with blood aflowing, so is their father.

I always excused it because buffy jumped into the damn thing, so maybe it recognized her blood instead of the actual key even though it was dawns blood that opened it. Maybe thats how it was suppose to be explained, or maybe I'm missing something else obvious and am totally wrong.

I just think that there was no real mythology-thing decided for Dawn, so there's nothing written in stone. I remember from the DVD extras from season 5 that Trachtenberg said that Joss wasn't sure of what to do with her character, so i figure that no matter what insights we get, there's no right answer, because there's no answer at all.

Kinda. Maybe we'll see more in season 8, with the tricewise thing.

It's too bad they chose not to explore this further in the series...it would've given Dawn some form of purpose in season 7 besides walking around looking stoic in "I'm a big girl, look at me!" outfits...

I believe Dawn was still 'The Key' she just didn't have a lock, though her blood could still probably be used in certain portal-opening activities or something like that. Also I don't think she is immortal, I think her soul/mind is separate from 'The Key' thing, like when she dies the energy would just stay on Earth in it's shiny form. I actually wonder what it does without a from, just kind of shimmer? Is it contained by anything or just free-floats?

I agree. if the monks were smart enough to hide it might they be smart enough to end it by giving it mortality (they did say this) and thus an end to the cycle?
Poor Dawnie. Wandering with no apparent purpose. Ah, the life of the sister of a Slayer 🙂

I have not really been reading the comics (I read through, I believe, issue 10). Does Dawn have a purpose now? Like, what is she? What does she do? Does she help train the Slayerettes or whatever? Is she still a giant?

Reading through this thread I just had a vague recollection of a fic I read once where after The Gift Dawn was in fact still the Key and she slowly learned more about and honed her powers. And basically her power was that she could open portals, and at first I think it was something like she couldn't really control it so she'd open a door (just random doors, like the closet for example) and on the other side would just be some random dimension each time. But as she became more aware of her power she became able to control it and it got to where she'd just think of a specific dimension, open any door, and on the other side that dimension would be... its a little too crazy fantasy for TV but I think its a pretty neat idea and it could work in the comics.

When reading through all of this, I'm actually quite interested in seeing a story set in the future, maybe 20, or maybe even way later about the key and following her around and has just got remotely something to do with the Buffyverse. Especially as I imagine Dawn to be extremely powerful, but just not trained or anything. If she were, she'd be quite useful and maybe even interesting to follow around in an own story centering around her or maybe another human incarnation.

Dawn = KEY to me. I don't even think she is a Summers like Buffy said, because she isn't her real sista.
