Question Question about episode "Enemies."

So, I loved "Enemies." It's definitely getting added on to my list of favorite episodes. But I'm still confused about one point. How did Buffy, Angel, and Giles know that the mayor was looking for a way to take Angel's soul? Did they figure it out when Faith came on to him? Was it just a guess? I'm very confused. A little help from a more experienced fan, please?

I do love this episode - its amazing! Love Faith, love the twist - one of the highlights of S3 for me.

However, even with this explanation i still cant quite get my head around this. Okay so the demon went to Giles because he owed him, but how did he know that Giles would have wanted to know what the Mayor was up to? How did he know the connection between the Mayor/Angel/Giles? Did he just pop in and tell Giles what he was up to in the area? lol it doest spoil my enjoyment of the episode at all... its just an element that ive never got my head around! lol
 
Maybe the demon is an omnipresent being and knows everything. 😱

I think sometimes it's best to not think too much about these things. 😛
