Okay, so I just went ahead and got the Firefly and Serenity DVDs....mainly from curiousity.
I can't say I'm horribly interested, but then again, I wasn't interested in watching Buffy or Angel in the beginning either.

I only got interested when I accidently pulled up "pictures" of the cast and saw all these people that I "don't like" in there....Caleb, Jasmine, and Adam Baldwin who between Angel and X-Files kind of naturally strikes a note of "don't go near him" in me.

It's not that I don't trust Joss's writing, because I do. If it were anyone else, I'd be more afraid. But, I have a way of getting oddly attached to characters and "labeling" them. I can see people that used to be in a Soap Opera when I was 14 on other shows and immediately either like or dislike them in whatever show they show up on.
Maybe it's because I CAN'T do that in real life, or maybe I'm just weird. But, I find it hard to believe that I could sit and watch all of Firefly and Serenity without having issues with the fact that my BRAIN will keep telling me that these people are EVIL. Not just not nice from an old soap...but REALLY EVIL.

Especially Caleb (Nathan Fillion)....he was one scary priest guy...and he hurt Xander who never hurt anybody. (Plus that whole eye gouging scene was unexpected and made cringe in my seat when it happened.)

I guess my question is.....
Assuming that anyone else has the same problem with labeling TV Characters as "good or bad", is the writing so good that it isn't a problem to get into or do I need to somehow wipe my memory clean before trying to watch Firefly?

I never thought of that before, but yeah, intriguing. If you're going to Firefly/Serenity from Angel/Buffy all these bad guys become good guys (well in Alec Baldwin's case kind of good guys).

Try this. Don't know if will work, or not, but I think it might. Watch the movie Serenity first. It's so powerful and immediate it might wipe preconceived notions of actors clean. You might be a little confused as to who's doing what, and why, but there's still Firefly to catch up on that.

But yeah, the characters and the actors interpretation of them in Firefly/Serenity are definitely worth a watch. They're strong enough once you get into them it shouldn't matter.

BTW you'll discover there are Buffy/Angel crossover actors other than the ones you mentioned in Firefly as well.
