Question about "Lessons" were the ghosts we saw supposed to be familiar or were they off screen victims from the past that Buffy didn't rescue?

I love Lessons as a season premiere but I've always wondered who are these ghosts supposed to be? were they supposed to be familiar to us or to Buffy? Or were they just random Sunnydale civilians that got killed because Buffy wasn't there to save them

I think random, but that would be an awesome way to go "back to the beginning." Even the ghost of Catherine the Great there! (I assume she died when the school blew up, presumably destroying the trophy.)

Though I know they couldn't really pull it off then (though they might've made it work with some heavy cosmetics and weird explanation), have Jenny Calendar among the ghosts (extra irony since Giles momentarily thought Jenny was haunting the school).

Might make it more awkward if like the janitor guy (don't know why I think of him that way) claimed he was cleaning the school during Graduation when they blew it up...collateral damage in the war on the Mayor come to literally haunt Buffy, among others.

Lessons had a lot of stuff that seemed like it setting something up, but dropped it immediately. So, that seems reasonable.

You know, when I saw the janitor initially that is 100% the conclusion I came to 😂

I think, as has been said, it was a bunch of random Hellmouth/Sunnydale High victims. The Hellmouth existed long before Buffy came to town, so it makes sci-fi sense that ghosts of the area would be in abundance (even if they hadn't always been so visible).

I like too the idea of the ghosts having been people Buffy couldn't save... especially folks like Jenny who the audience may believe Dawn never met before she passed. It could've added another element to that episode... but I don't think it was meant to be a throwback. Or to have any tie to Buffy, save for their terrorizing her little sister
