I recently watched the BTVS season two episode 'Phases'. The werewolf hunter, Kane and Buffy are having an argument about killing the werewolf, as Buffy states it's still a person.
Kane says something like, "Their hides fetch a hefty penny."
And Buffy asks, "so you're just going to kill it?"
Kane then replies with something like, "well it's hard to skin them when they're alive."
.......
If you watch later seasons of Buffy and Angel, when a werewolf dies, it transforms back into it's human form, which ironically means that to skin a werewolf, it would actually have to be alive.
Do you think this was just a mistake by writers or is there something I missed?

It was written by the guys who went on to do That's 70s. Nuff said?

I wonder if the Angel episode Unleashed makes more sense where the restauranteur was going to slice Nina-wolf up live to serve werewolf to valued customers. Apparently you can only kill a werewolf with a silver bullet, so how much of it can you eat, before it expires?

i guess we will never really know, there are so many Buffyverse laws and rules that you need to expect some to be a little inconsistent.

Yeah, I guess you could say that, like the rules about werewolves in the Buffyverse hadn't been defined at that time.

By Season 5 of Angel they're saying this.

WESLEY
She has to be, at least through dinner. Once a werewolf dies, it reverts to its human state.

Personally I think some writers care less about making sense than others. I never got the feeling it was a big priority with Des Hotel and Batali. Outside the Buffyverse there was a pretty long tradition of Werewolves reverting to human form when they died. You'd think that might have crossed their minds.

Or maybe you could just say Cain was talking tongue in cheek when he made the werewolf skinning crack. But no, wait a minute, doesn't he show Buffy a necklace he claims he made out of the teeth of the werewolves he claims to have killed. To make it make sense you'd have to say Cain is just a big talking liar who never has killed an actual werewolf, but wants people to think he has.

What about since there are different species of Werewolf, that only some of them return to human form after they die? Like the way Nina was a special breed that walked upright, and when Veruca is killed by Oz she dies and stays in the form of a Werewolf.

dude, you totally stole my line! that's what i was going to say! lol!
it's been said on Angel that Nina was a different species of werewolf than Oz was, so maybe only Nina's species return to their human form after they die, whereas Oz's form stay in their wolf state if they died in their worlf state.

Lol that's what i was gonna say!^
But to what kane says, he probably meant "werewolf" as in the whole creature, person and wolf..? or i could be wrong. They obviously missed the fact that the general werewolfs do revert back to the original form.
But this is Joss taking poetic licence agian....i mean his vamps dust when you stake em yet in the Ann Rice novels they don't at least that's what i remember.
