Here are the guidelines which could fit my criteria

- They should have an ensemble cast of characters, with each one having a very deep backstory

- Each episode should be stand-alone, yet be a part of a larger story

- A comic relief, despite the serious undertone of the story

here are good examples for TV shows i am watching

Torchwood, and any Joss Whedon-produced show ever.

Have you ever watched "Angel"? 🙂 "Firefly" is another excellent Joss Whedon show, if you've never given it a chance...

Don't know how you'd feel about "Desperate Housewives", but it's pretty awesome. There's a little bit of everything in it.

I love Desperate Housewives!
I will always recommend Pretty Little Liars. You have to start from the beginning though otherwise you will be completely lost.

PLL gives me a headache now. I keep watching just because I want to know but other than that I feel like the show became so annoying and inconsistent...
Of the shows that are currently in production:

The Librarians
Agents of S H I E L D
Agent 13 (possibly. It hasn't aired yet)
Constantine
Castle
Hawaii Five O
Banshee (though a lot of people will disagree on this one because of the extreme adult content)

The X-files is an old show that has all of the features you seem to be looking for. Many people dislike the later seasons, but just about everyone agrees the first four (or five) seasons are very good. It has its tongue in cheek moments too. I was a huge fan back in the day. Someone above suggested continuum, I think that fits your criteria as well.

Veronica Mars
If you like witty, couragous heroines who fit into the 'highschool is hell' theme then you'll like this show. It's got great stand alone plots and running subplots/mysteries throughout the first two seasons. The third season- set in college- isn't as good but it still has lots of great moments.

Smart dialogue, characterisation and pacing, I can't recommend it enough. 🙂

I have to rewatch this show. I forgot about it, but the first two seasons are really good, if I remerber well.
@RoxySilver really? I think the show is still really good. I'm of course wanting to hurry up and find out who 'A' is, but I think the writers are doing a good job of keeping it fresh and I feel the show is a lot darker now than the first couple of seasons; almost like it has aged with it's viewers.
Do you have any 'A' theories?

I'm currently rewatching Being Human (the UK original). It's a good character driven show that has a good sense of humour despite being dark.

@TotallySpiked I agree that the latest seasons are darker and maybe more interesting, but I got bored around the end of season 2, and since then, I believe I didn't really give a chance to the show.
I keep watching because it drives me nuts that I can't figure the mysteries out, I'm usually good at this😡.
I don't know if you've read A series of unfortunate events but it's pretty much like this: you get close to the end, and then yet another new thing appears and screws things up. But in the case of PPL, I feel like it's too much.

@RoxySilver I know exactly what you mean, just as you think 'A' is going to be revealed soon, you find out there's another 2 seasons. I guess I'm just impressed that the storyline is basically unguessable, which is rare in this day and age for TV shows.
I wonder if we'll all get to the end and be confused as to why that/those particular person/people are 'A' and will have to watch the entire series to pick up clues.
I know that the executive producer has said that we will side with 'A' when we find out the reason behind why they're doing it, which is interesting.

I love Continuum, but you do need to watch it from the start. I also liked Orphan Black, Defying Gravity, Supernatural, Doctor who and Agents of Shield for current shows.

House sprung to mind considering your criteria. Some of the other shows I recommend: Orphan Black, Orange is the New Black, Skins, Games of Thrones, the first two seasons of American Horror Story, Freaks and Geeks... It really depends what you are looking for, comedies, drama, horror? Lots of good stuff out there!

Must be because even the writers don't know what they're doing anymore lol. Seriously, they dropped SO many storylines (even when they are not about A) that I think they keep changing their minds and just going with the flow. I doubt the finale will ever solve every single plot hole they have created. Nonetheless, I also still watch the show, and I it's entertaining enough for what it is.

I'd agree about House. Very good series. :)

Yea I love house.
I also like shows that fit your criteria. I'll add Bones, if you haven't seen that. I like serial cop shows like Law and Order:SVU and Cold Case, but Bones also has a lot of good comedy as well, with some over arcing plots and characterizations. The first 6 seasons are really good. And have you seen all of Joss' shows? Angel, Firefly, Dolhouse? If not go watch those too. And if you love Eliza Dushku (like some of us) her show Tru Calling is good too, at least I really like it.

Cold Case is one of my favorites... I find it quite consistent and powerful until the end.

Tru Calling karma, I keep forgetting about that show, but I really enjoyed it, really good stuff
I don't know if you will like, but this is my list I'm watching currently...

The Vampire Diaries... and it's spin off The Originals
NCIS
True Blood
Game of Thrones
Dr Who

We have to catch up for fan chats about TVD, The Originals. GOT and Dr Who!
@RoxySilver: Cold Case is one of my favorites... I find it quite consistent and powerful until the end
It's really a great show that gets over looked by similar more popular shows. I agree, it's very consistent. I don't think there is a bad season. Most of the episodes I end up crying at the end. It's very touching and sad. They do a good job at making the characters sympathetic most of the time. I remember the first episode I watched back in like'03, and I cried at the end. I was hooked from then on. And I love Detective Rush.
