Ok, I got some info for ya!
The speech centres of the brain are called "Wernicke's area" (located in the temporal lobe) and "Broca's area" in the frontal lobe. These are the speech processing areas. Wernicke's area is close to the Auditory area where incoming sounds are processed, and the inpulses sent to the speech area to be deciphered and understood. You would then generate a response in the language area, and it would be sent to the motor area that controls the mouth (in the frontal lobe near the pareital lobe). The impulses from that area control your mouth. As for the "speaking before you think" question, that really is a learned response. Most people with normal brains and brain function have little difference in processing time in the brain. The big difference is in the "association areas" of the frontal lobe, where we have stored our information on societal practices and our own experiences. Thus, children are usually allowed some latitude when they say inappropriate things at inappropriate times. They don't have the experience necessary to filter their responses thru their memories of what people would think is appropriate. As we grow up, we are supposed to use our experiences to filter our thoughts before we speak. Some poeple choose not to do this, some never learn to, and in a some cases, some people have damage or imbalances that prevent these areas from working (like those people that swear or make sounds and can't control it...I forget the name of the syndrome. Damn I hate it when those braincells die like that).
