Question for New Fans of the Whedonverse

So I'm curious about something...

I'm noticing a new wave of Buffy/Angel/Firefly fans on the internet.

This got me to wondering, how many of you discovered the verse via DVD?

In fact, if I'm not just imagining this, and there are new fans discovering the work of Joss via DVD, how does it work? Did you used to be a sometimes viewer, then get a deal on a DVD, or have one given to you, or did you get a boxset for Christmas even though you'd never seen an episode?

Or did you discover Angel on the tube when it was still playing, and that made you decide to check out all things Joss? Or did you get hooked by reruns?

I got into it last summer by seeing Chosen on Sky One. Then I watched the repeats but the DVDs sure did help, especially Buffy S6 (cut-a-thon) and Angel as that was played less regularly.

I was hooked by a friend, then discovered the backstory through her VHS sets and online transcripts in time for the final season of Buffy, and the last two of Angel.

I had seen the movie and was not impressed, but heard the series was more serious in tone. I started watching and the quality of the acting and scripts kept me coming back.

Buying the first DVD set was an impulse buy. I happened to be in a Borders and saw it while in line and grabbed it. I bought each following set as they came out. Invaribly, I would miss some episodes each season, so the DVD sets helped me plug in the holes.

I'm not a new fan, but I can proudly say I converted my sister tonight.

After fighting with the DVD player in my room, I decided to bring my viewing downstairs into the family room. She came in and started watching...we would up watching about 8 episodes in a row. After every episode she was like "more more!". Made me happy because she was one of my biggest critics for liking a show named Buffy.

Even caught her shedding a tear for Spike & Anya at the end of Chosen.

Not a new fan either by any means (I started with the Buffy Pilot on it's first airing) BUT like Cordelia, I did make my two best friends (they're a married couple) a fan of the show. Last year, I started by lending them Season 1 of Buffy, and have gone through ALL of the seasons, both Angel and Buffy.

They're currently up to Season 4 of Angel and Season 6 of Buffy (they're just waiting for me to finish Season 7 of Buffy). I got them hooked via the DVDs. 🙂

I´m living in Sweden (and indeed I´m swedish!) and I never used to care for Buffy, but now this fall they have been showing the series (the 6:th and 7:th) one episode each evening just at the time I usually have my dinner. So I got hooked on the Spike character.

I still dislike Buffy, like I would anyone running about killing vampires. That is just rude! (And of course for her way of treating Spike.)
I don´t agreee at all that it is worse and more evil to eat peoples blood than what the rest of us do. I´m not seeing any vampires keeping cattle in horrific living conditions, molesting children, using atomic power or otherwise ****ing up the enviroment with chemical poison and all the other truly evil crap we do every day just by trying to survive and beeing very selfish and lazy to let it go on. Humans are evil. Other animals are not. I would count vampires as "other animals". If they have to feed on blood, what better animal to eat of than humans? Humans totally are overpopulating this planet.

Heh, that's almost my story, just that it happened last February-April instead of this fall. They were showing the 4th season then and I fell in love with Amber (not really Tara though) and the fact that Willow became gay. Then I bought the DVDs this summer (June).. Though my real obsession started in May..
