Questions about the avatars

I would really like to know more about the avatar thing in this board. I'm talking about the avatars that the non-staff can choose from the list.

For instance, what exactly is the process; like the choosing of a picture to make into an avatar. How is it selected? Who selects them and when? If there's a way to request for your picture to be turned into an avatar, besides posting the picture in the gallery and not knowing if it gets "picked up"?
And is there a possibility for regular members to help out on the process?

Any picture that is added to the gallery gets pulled up in my graphics program. If it's not already an avatar, not a wallpaper, is larger than 125 x 100 and not of bad quality it gets made when I have time to go through them all. When new avatars are added it is announced in Board News. No, regular members cannot help other than adding pictures to the gallery.
