This kind of spawned from the "Whats your religion" thread. I was wondering if the witchcraft people practice in real life is anything like what you see on different tv shows or movies? I imagine you probably can't teleport, but since so many people do it, it has to work somehow right?

Well, in my teenage years it was a thing between me and my girl friends. Nothing really serious. But I remember once I tried to do a spell (it's weird using this word, it's so "televisionlized"), and I didn't create a protection circle (or whatever they call it, don't really remember, but it's supposed to protect spells from coming back at you), and I wanted to cast the spell for some reason, and it really back fired. I don't remember the exact reason, but the entire week after casting the spell was one of the worst I've even had. Don't know why, don't remember what and who, but I really felt like it was because of the spell. So I don't recommend that. Spells never really worked for me, or at least I think they didn't, it was mostly for fun. But it was nothing like on TV. I do believe spells work though. Again not like on TV, and I wasn't that experienced (nor today, I don't do it anymore). However, there are some "special abillities" in my family. Again, not like on TV. I hope that answered your question.

I've had a few surprising results with sigils before, nothing too crazy - nothing "out of this world" - but definitely noteworthy.

I wouldn't say that I've practiced witchcraft, so much as I've studied magick a bit. I've dabbled. Simply put:

the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with the will

A sigil? Like what they use on Supernatural to move angels?

I've done a couple protection and healing things here and there... From my experience, it's not like the TV. But nothing ever is. I'll have to admit, it would be super cool if we could really do stuff like the Wiccans in Buffyverse. haha

I've always wanted to try this stuff out. But I have no idea where to start =/
Pop magic!

Magick

If you get into into sigil magick and all that sort of psychological stuff, I'd recommend checking out Liber Null by Peter Carrol. Haven't read it myself, though I'm told it's an excellent primer.

(You're not going to be able to violate physical laws or anything like that with magick. Also, a word of caution: not for the feint of heart and some of the more advanced stuff can literally make you go insane if you are not prepared psychologically.)

ah thanks so much!!! I'll have to start reading when i'm fully awake lol gonna need to buy a journal

I remember talking to a Wiccan once and asked a load of questions, like can you float a pencil and stuff, and they basically explained that a spell is no different to what Christians are doing when they pray, so I've always taken it like that.

Yup, it's pretty much the case, oh and of course nothing for self gain or to harm other either etc Live by the Wiccan Rede. :)
So does anyone want to go into more detail as to what they results of their spells are/were?

I've always been really fascinated by the Wicca lifestyle, and in junior high a friend and I used to try to do spells. It never really worked, though. It's not for me, but I appreciate it and continue to be interested in it.
