R.I.P. Little Richard!
One of the early, really big influential artists. He was part of that regional Southern first wave before rock'n'roll went truly national, then international and everyone started copying it (a bunch of country, blues, gospel, etc... acts decided they could do it, too, and began mixing it all together!).
He certainly had an unmistakable sound.
Not many big names from that era left anymore (the Killer is truly one of the last men standing... against all expectations). Little Richard was one of those last ones my mind would immediately go to for the few who are left.
Having old parents (born in 1941 and 1950), I grew up on Oldies. Elvis Presley was always my favorite (even went to Graceland and Sun Records), but I'm also a fan of the Righteous Brothers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Queen, the Beach Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Platters, the Animals and many, many more (a few eras in there!). My dad actually had some of those '50s rock'n'rollers play in his high school auditorium (including Jerry Lee). I'm *very* familiar with this music and have been listening to it my entire life.

I have been around for the entire existence of rock and roll and he was one of the first stars at a time when rock and roll was widely hated by the older generation and this was just one aspect of what was politely called the "generation gap". He didn't flinch from the overt racism of the time and he was a factor in overcoming it. Modern corporate rock has completely forgotten the antagonism rock stars had to endure in the old days.
At least he lived to the ripe old age of 87, something few rock musicians ever do. RIP
