Under peoples user names I've noticed that there are descriptions like 'townie', 'villain', 'Bangel shipper' etc. etc. what exactly do those mean? Do people pick them or are they based on how active people are on the boards?

I am pretty sure that if you don't modify it yourself (which you can do in User CP on the top left) it's a generic name based on post count.

In a way they are both. It's your usertitle. You can leave it untouched as the board's default and (I pressume) it changes with your post count? Or you can go to your user cp and then to Edit Your Details where you can change it yourself. Like I changed mine.
