Title is self-explanatory.

From favorite to least favorite (kind of):

City Of - This is one of the best first episodes I've ever seen. It's AtS in a nutshell and introduces Angel's character wonderfully.
Judgment - I considered ranking this above 'City Of'. This episode is perfect thematically and recaps season 1 while foreshadowing Angel's arc in season 2 brilliantly. Also, Faith/Angel awww.
Deep Down - One of the best S4 episodes. Wesley and Lilah are fascinating, Angel's speech to Connor applies to the entire Buffyverse, etc. An entire episode of awesomeness.
When She Was Bad - I really enjoy this episode and the fact that it doesn't ignore Buffy's death in S1. Love Buffy's dance (or mating ritual), her being a bitca to everyone and finally grinding The Master's bones.
Anne - Yes, the part in the hell dimension was kind of bad, but I enjoyed the contrast between Buffy's lovely dream with Angel and the reality, seeing the Scoobies trying to slay and Buffy giving Lily a new identity (Lily/Anne is one of the best examples of how people can change in the Buffyverse).
Bargaining part 1 - It's an exciting episode. Liked Willow's spell, how the Scoobies were coping with Buffy's death and Buffy crawling out of her grave.
Welcome to the Hellmouth - this episode is a bit boring but a nice introduction to the show. Giles is the best part.
Heartthrob - This episode, much like AtS S3, is a mess and sends a mixed message. Don't really know the point of half of the scenes in this episode. Still, there are some funny moments and interesting flashbacks.
Lessons - A nice breath of fresh air after season 6. Buffy did have mom hair though.
Buffy vs. Dracula - It's an average episode, doesn't make an impression.
Conviction - Ugh, Eve! Angel's hair! W&H were much cooler before the A.I team moved in. This episode doesn't really make you want to watch season 5.
The Freshman - I can't watch the entire episode. It irks me so much.

Season openers are cool! Let's do this!

Best to worst:

(The first 8 are really close to each other in quality)

1. Lessons: In terms of plot, this isn't anything special (except for the final scene, which is MINDBLOWING), just solid all the way through. But the episode's real strength is that it just gives me such a constant, heartwarming sense of "my little kids are all growed up!" 🙂 Businessman Xander, mom Buffy (her mom-hair is adorable!), "zen" Willow, Dumbledore Giles, mini-Buffy Dawn... They all grew so much over these 7 years, and I'm just so proud of each and every one of them in this ep! Add to that crazy-Spike as a very intriguing mystery, tons of clever foreshadowing ('Lessons' and 'Chosen' work perfectly as the bookends of one story), lots of scenes from all around the globe (Istanbul, Sunnydale, England, back to Sunnydale, back to England...) that give it a truly epic feeling, and that fantastic ending (ALL of the chills!), and this is the best of the best. Season 7 has its flaws, by my GOD does it begin and end well.

2. Bargaining: This episode suffers from a problem - it feels like it started as one episode, but the writers had too much story for one episode, so they turned it into two episodes... But they didn't really have enough story for two episodes, so they dragged some scenes out a little too much. And so, the episode doesn't have as much fast paced momentum as I would have liked. BUT... The story in this episode, no matter how stretched, is freakin' HEARBTREAKING. This is the first episode after Buffy's death in 'The Gift', and it's just PACKED with amazingly moving examples of grief - my heart breaks when the Buffybot says "you're my sister" and hugs Dawn, and my heart breaks when Spike tells Dawn that he won't leave her to get hurt again, and my heart breaks when Willow explains why she wants to resurrect Buffy ("Her soul, her essence -- that could be somewhere else, trapped in some hell dimension, like Angel was. Suffering eternal torment, just because she saved us, and I am not gonna let her... I'm not gonna leave her there. It's Buffy"), and my heart breaks when I see Spike's reaction to the Buffybot talking about his "washboard abs" (he does have nice abs...), and my heart breaks when Dawn cuddles with the inactive Buffybot at night because she misses Buffy, and my heart breaks when Giles says goodbye to everyone, and GAH, just typing this is heartbreaking. And it's not just heartbreaking - it's also HIGHLY disturbing (Willow killing the deer, the Buffybot getting torn to pieces, Willow VOMITING SNAKES, seeing Buffy's rotten body, seeing Buffy crawling out of her own grave, seeing Buffy's dead expressions throughout - this is one of the darkest episodes of the entire Buffyverse), and ridiculously entertaining (mostly the Buffybot - "that'll put marzipan in your pie plate, bingo!"), and thrilling (Buffy fighting savagely after her ressurection), and just everything that I want in a Buffy episode. Also, this episode is, like, the golden standard of how resurrections should be handled in fiction.

3. The Long Way Home: If 'Lessons' gave me a constant sense of "my little kids are all growed up", this one gives me a constant sense of "my little kids are f#%$ing SUPERHEROES!" Seriously, I cannot explain how satisfying it is to see my favorite characters being so POWERFUL. Watching little clown-y Xander being all Nick Fury with an army under his care, watching little nerdy Willow being an all-powerful witch-goddess, watching my little innocent valley girl Buffy being a freakin' GENERAL with an ARMY under her command, jumping out of hellicopters... It's just so PERFECT! These guys were always heroes to me, and it's amazing to see the world finally seeing them that way too. And since these characters are so relatable to me, I guess this is what you'd call a "power fantasy". In contrast to 'Bargaining', The story here is a little TOO packed for my taste, but this is still totally awesome. If this was live-action, it would have been my number 1.

4. Buffy vs Dracula: The haters are crazy - this episode is SO MUCH FUN, ya'll! Dracula is one of the greatest recurring villains of the Buffyverse, like Ethan Rayne and Drusilla and pre-chip Spike. AND, at the same time, it is a surprisingly layered character study, with Buffy's dark side emerging in a MUCH more interesting way than in season 3 (Bufy wasn't "dark" in 'Bad Girls', she was just irresponsible), and Giles' final conversation with Buffy is amazingly moving.

5. New Rules: I usually don't like it when stories are so fan-service-y... But this arc makes me want to reconsider that opinion. This arc is BUILT around the idea of nostalgia - writer Christos Gage (with producer Joss Whedon) knew that most fans just wanted the story to feel like the old TV show, and so he decided to build the entire season as a discussion about the ways in which people hold on to their old habits and familiar environments. It doesn't always work perfectly, but in THIS arc, it DOES. Fun, heartwarming, engaging, heartbreaking, inspiring... This arc has it all. I didn't put it higher only because Gage's control on the characters' voices isn't perfect here, yet.

6. Anne: Like 'Bargaining', this episode does a great job of capitalizing on the amazingly heartbreaking season finale the preceded it. Unfortunately, it also has the un-enviable job of retconing the amazing ending of Buffy running away from Sunnydale in 'Becoming'. Buffy returning home after just 1 episode was disappointing, but it was probably unavoidable, and this episode did the best it could with this constraint.

7. Live Through This: Faith! FAITH! FaithFaithFaithFaithFaith! This is the first arc in the history of the Buffyverse that contained Faith in a regular (STARRING!) role, and since Faith is one of my favorite characters of all time, and since Faith was CRIMINALLY underused in the first 13 seasons of the Buffyverse, this arc just makes me unbelievably, ridiculously happy. Add to that the fact that Gage's control of the voices here was perfect, and that this book contains the best art of ANY Buffyverse comic, and that the London premise seemed to fit the story like a glove, and that Angel's "quest for redemption" finally seemed to make sense (since he finally had things to atone for that WEREN'T his soulless past) and you've got one HELL of a story. The only reason this isn't higher is because the story really takes its time to get moving.

8. Conviction: The new premise of season 5 of AtS was just a BRILLIANT decision by Whedon. Watching the gang trying to function in 'Wolfram & Hart' is a delight ("You have reached ritual sacrifice. For goats, press one, or say 'goats'."), and it provides a never-ending stream of conflicts and surprises, and it challenges the core values of EVERY character in fascinating ways. This season changed the premise of the show COMPLETELY, and since I always considered the premise of the show to be deeply problematic, this change was the best decision in the show's history. If the previous premise was just "Batman with fangs", this new premise was "Batman with fangs... If he sold out". It brought back the element of subversion, that 'Buffy' always had and 'Angel' always lacked.

9. Deep Down: Everything about Cordelia is terrible here, and Connor's character is a huge mess (and not in the good way), and the word "champion" continues to annoy the hell out of me, but everything else about this episode is terrific. Watching people abuse Connor is very satisfying (and the fact that this is true is a huge FAILURE by the writers), and Gunn & Fred are adorable as the lone survivors of the season 3 gang, and Angel's hallucinations are interesting, and Wesley continues to be a much better Batman than Angel, and Lilah finally gets the central role she deserves, and the overal DARKNESS of this episode is just very impressive. It's really something.

10. The Freshman: Apparently, I'm just a sucker for premise-changers. This episode is too slow for my taste, and Buffy suddenly being weak in the beginning and then suddenly being strong in the end doesn't make sense, but everything else is stellar. The slow and depressing first half means that the second half is very uplifting (Xander's "What would Buffy do" speech always gets me), and the lady vampire here is VERY entertaining, and the university setting always seems very promising (despite the fact fact that the second half of the season kinda falls apart).

11. Heartthrob: Just a perfectly solid season opener. Nothing especially impressive, but nothing wrong either. I like the flashbacks, I like the Angel/Cordy dynamic (her smiles in this episode are just adorable), I love the Angel/Fred dynamic (fatherly Angel is the best Angel), the gang is tight, the villain raises some mildly interesting questions about love and obsession and revenge, and the cliffhanger is strong.

12: Freefall: The first Whedon-written issue of this arc is PERFECTION ITSELF, with drunk-Buffy being all adorable, and an interesting down-to-earth mystery (what did Buffy do when she was drunk?), and some VERY clever foreshadowing for later twists, and just tons and tons of fun all around ("When you get right down to it, a nice hot shower is just thousands and thousands of scalding water drops screaming down at you like kamikazes in a never-ending wave of wet hate"). The problem is that the other 3 issues were written by Andrew Chambliss, and Andrew Chambliss is just NOT FUNNY. He doesn't have the penchant for witty dialogue that DEFINES the Buffyverse (yes, witty dialogue is THAT important to these stories), and that really bothers me. I like his plots and characterization, mostly, but without the witty dialogue, it just doesn't really feel like Buffy. Still, in this first arc he's at his best. The first issue is 10/10, and the others are, like, 8/10.

13. Judgement: A solid opener. It loses points for being even more Batman-y than usual, and I really dislike the karoke, but it's nice all around, with a full gang, an entertaining duel at the end, and a lovely, blink-and-you-miss-it appearance from Faith. Although, that appearance just reminds me that Faith is gonna stay in prison for 2 and a half seasons, and that pisses me the hell OFF.

14. When She Was Bad: 'Buffy', to me, doesn't REALLY start until 'Innocence', because all of the earlier episodes just have this constant feeling of "I don't really care about any of this". This is no exception. The annoying one is boring as ever, the characters are still pretty shallow stereotypes, Angel is all stalker-y, and bitchy isn't a good look on Buffy. I appreciate the fact that Whedon wanted to show the consequences of Buffy's not-a-death, but having it resolved so simply, in just one episode, is hardly the appropriate treatment of this issue. I did really like the Giles-is-The-Master dream fake-out, and I liked the sexy dance, and I love the musical themes that are introduced here and will continue to appear throughout the season.

15. City Of: This episode is actually quite good, for 'Angel', with a very good villain and a tight script and great performances from Doyle and Cordy, but I rate it this low because it introduces a premise that just doesn't WORK for me. Angel just isn't authentic as a Batman type. I never buy it. I don't buy his brooding, and I don't buy his anger, and I don't buy his badass moments, and I don't buy his loner attitude. David Boreanaz is none of these things. David Boreanaz looks like a fun-loving goofball, and that's all I see when I watch him trying to be Batman-y. It just doesn't work. The only parts that really work are the comedy bits, and the other characters around Angel.

16. Where the River meets the Sea: Boring. Just boring. Writer Victor Gischler just doesn't get how the Buffyverse works, and he doesn't know how to create long-term plots in it, and this book really suffers for it. The art is really good with the likenesses and with thedetailed backgrounds, but the charatcers always feel very stiff, like they were copied off of pictures... Because they were. The fact that Angel and Faith are in 2 different continents, dealing with 2 completely seperate threats, despite being in the same book, is also a huge flaw. This gets point for including Faith, and for the fun little crossover in the beginning, and for some nice bits here and there, but it's really weak.

17. Welcome to the Hellmouth: The first time I started watching Buffy, I dropped it after 5-6 episodes, because it was really weak, and deated, and uninteresting. I only picked it up after incessant recommendations, and I only kept at it because episode 7, 'Angel', finally showed some serious potential. This opener suffers from all of these season 1 problems - terrible CGI and make-up, terrible stunt choreography, shallow characters, INCREDIBLY dated looks, TERRIBLE musical score (seriously, this 1997 score sounds like it came out of 1980), boring, uncinvincing, cliched villains, and so on... It gets points for some witty dialogue and for planting the seeds of MUCH greater things to come, but this is BAD. I guess it looked better in 1997, because today it just looks like... Blah.

Lol. Good answers although I don't agree with 90% of it.

Prison was a GOOD thing for Faith. It helped her learn routine, kept her from using sex as a tool, and begin the process of learning how to not be a drifter like her parents.

1. Welcome to the Hellmouth

Never really get tired of this episode, and I've watched it a lot. Just a perfect introduction to the show. Forever special to me. The reason I got into the show and started my love for it.

2. Conviction

Great opener. Really felt like a fresh new start and it is fun to see the AI team grapple with their new environment. A lot of fun scenes, and a lot of scenes demonstrating the individual characters strenght. (Only downside is Eve and Harmony)

3. Anne

I really like seeing Buffy try to make it on her own, and I always get chills/grin when she's in the demon world and smiles her Buffy smile, says her name and starts kicking ass. Great stuff.

4. Deep down

Don't take a way my bucket, Wesley! It's really hard to rate things, I swear.
I like it. I like that it's Wesley who finds Angel, I like seeing this side of Wesley. I like Wesley and Lilah. I like Fred using a stun gun on Connor. Lilah decapitating Linwood. All the joy.

5. When she was bad

I have mixed feelings about this one. I like it and I also don't. I do think it's a strong episode, and it's 'nice' to see that Buffy has some emotional scars from traumatic events. It's just not an episode I get particularly excited about

6. Buffy vs Dracula

I like it, I think it's funny and a light and a great way to start off a season. It feels, I don't know, more adult already (compared to the previous seasons opener)

7. Heartthrob
Always love seeing glimpses of Angel's vamp-a-licious past. Also find it interesting that we have another vampire pair that seems to "reek of humanity" to borrow a phrase. Would James also have been a candidate for becoming a redeemed Spike if only he had met his own Buffy?

8. City of
Good introduction to the show. It's not an epsiode I'll watch over and over, but it's solid.

9. Bargaining
Dramatic, gripping. The best episode of the season.

10. The Freshman

Meh. Lukewarm opening. I used to hate it but I feel like I like it more and more with each re-watch

11. Judgement
This episode just bugs me. I rarely watch it.

12. Lessons
What killed my love for the show. Crappy start for the season that shouldn't have been. This episode told me "stop watching!" but I didn't listen and now I can't erase this season from my brain, regretably.

Lol, one could think. Obviously I was surprised at your number 1, but I had to go back after reading your karma comment cause even though I had read your post, my mind had automatically sorted Welcome to the hellmouth in the middle of your list, not the dead end. Lol. Such is my love for it.

  1. " The Freshman": a completely new/different style... It seems almost a different show... Joss was very able to create the feeling of disorientation, confusion, insecurity and the real protagonist was, this is sad, sunday ( a sort of " vimpire-Buffy" without mental complexes and.... A little Glory! 😀)
2. " Welcome to Hellmouth": very adorable, the main characters were so little ( in a certain way also Giles was " green") full of energy, perspectives and busy with typical issues of teenagers without all the drama about power, revenge, very hard choices and so on... 🙄

3. " Anne" : here being The Slayer starts to create that feeling that only Faith will able to understand better than anyone.... 🙁 and the beautiful friendship starts to send us disintegration signals 😡

4. " When She Was Bad": good but it is not so exceptional.....

5. " Lessons": not so bad, but all the ghost/not ghost was very annoying.... It could be more better: it started very well then hard to see with trepidation....😱

6. " Buffy vs. Dracula" : the only thing very interesting was Willow " fire magic" and also the creepy, cryptically, lapidary phrase " "You think you know what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun."😱

7. " Bargaining, Part One" : no comment 🙁

" Angel" : very good,strong episodes..... But " Buffy is Buffy" 🙂😎

Buffy

1. Bargaining (S6).
The two parter allowed us to see what the Scoobies were like without Buffy around, in a much better way than Anne, imo. Everyone wasn't, again imo, falling apart and so for me their reasons for bringing Buffy back were selfish, which prepares the viewer for the rest of the seasons themes. On top of that, it was really well-written, funny, poignant, there was some action and a nice twist at the cliffhanger ending of the first part. All in all, I would rewatch this more than any other opener. (anyone who has read my ranking of episodes knows my distaste for openers.)
2. Welcome to the Hellmouth (S1). It was just such a great pilot, I still am in awe of it. I've spoken of it before, so here's a quick summary of why; great, fleshed out characters for a pilot, nice cliffhanger ending, wonderful (and campy) dialogue and the fight scenes weren't bad for its time and budget.
3. Anne (S3). I almost switched this with number 4, but we'll do it this way instead. It, much like another I'll mention a little further down, suffered from not being a two-parter, so it was a bit rushed, but what they were trying to show got across alright and there were some iconic moments from Buffy's sojourn to LA; the whole fight scene in the hell dimension (just realized both Angel and Buffy spent their summer in one of those, lol), her line reiterating what she is accepting that she is, and I love this line. "Can I be Anne?"
4. The Freshman (S4). Purely for Sunday and the back and forth between Buffy and Giles, or it would've been lower.
5. Lessons (S7). Spike and the Buffy/Dawn/Xander dynamics save this one from being at the bottom 🙂
6. When She Was Bad (S2). This, too, suffered from not being a two-parter, but had a lot less saving graces than Anne.
7. Buffy vs Dracula (S5). Ugh, just...no. Funny moments can't save every episode...

Angel

1. Deep Down (S4).
Everything, from Angel's hallucinations, to the Gunn/Fred/Connor scenes, to seeing what has become of Wesley since we last saw him, just a stellar outing from an otherwise weaker season.
2. City of... (S1). I can't compare it to WTTH, since there were two established characters in it, though it did well with introducing Doyle. However, take that away, and it's still a great episode. I also love that in Angel's first 'case' he doesn't actually save the target of the vision, though I'm sure it helps that he does save Cordy.
3. Conviction (S5). Not the strongest outing, but certainly stronger than the last two, super weak episodes just by themselves. This one had the task of needing to introduce us to the W&H arc we'd been waiting all summer for, thanks to Home, and it did an okay job. The cliffhanger ending was nice, especially since, when I watched it the first time, I didn't know that he was joining the cast; I thought he was permanently dead.
4. Judgment (S2). This wins out over 5 purely for the message it sent, about demons capable of being good. To me that was a theme never explored enough in Angel, and barely at all in Buffy.
5. Heartthrob (S3). Again, just...no...

I went back and read all of yours, but I just can't do a list of both shows, they're sooo different, it'd be impossible.

So hard to choose between Anne, welcome to the hellmouth and When she was bad. I love theses 3 so much 🙂

Best to worst

Buffy

1) Welcome to the Hellmouth - If I watch this episode, I just can't not rewatch all the serie so this gets me hooked all the time.
2) When She Was Bad - I love bad Buffy and how it shows how the characters still hurt from past experiences
3) Anne - I'm Buffy, the vampire slayer and you are?
4) The Freshman - I liked it but didn't love it
5)Buffy vs. Dracula - It was interesting to have Dracula but I wasn't in love with his portrayal
6)Lessons - Just Meh for me
7) Bargaining part 1 - The biker demons, I hate them!

Angel

1) Deep Down - Best openers for a terrible season, all the characters are on point in this episode
2) City Of - The ending gets me everytime - Can you fly?
3) Conviction - I liked the switch to W&H, got me wondering what was next
4) Heartthrob - Good but not the best
5) Judgment - I liked the Darla part but not really the rest

So hard to choose between Anne, welcome to the hellmouth and When she was bad. I love theses 3 so much 🙂

1. When She Was Bad - This is my absolute favorite Season opener because I feel the tonal switch in BTVS. Where as Prophecy Girl ended with a kinda cheesy ok everything is fine now let's go dance, I love that they went back to explore how dying and accepting her calling really took a toll on Buffy. She looks great in this episode and also Angel has my favorite line. "Why are you ridin' me?"
2. Judgment - This is everything, everything, everything I love about Angel. It kicks off my favorite Season in a perfect way! I LOVE the new sets we get to see Caritas, and the Hyperion (even if only just in passing and great foreshadowing by the way!). This line is just... amazing "I-I saw the light at the end of the tunnel - that some day I might become human. - - That light was so bright, I thought I was already out." I love all of the Angel, Cordy, Wesley stuff in this episode. And then we end it with my favorite redemption buddies Angel and Faith. Its pretty much perfection.
3. Welcome to the Hellmouth - Probably on the first few watches I had less appreciation for this opener but now that it introduces all of my favorite characters I love it. I love our introduction to Buffy, I love the Willow/Buffy stuff, I love how Giles is a total dweeb, and I love Angel and Buffy's first meeting.
4. Anne - An atypical start with an atypical episode. The story itself was secondary to me but what really worked for me was the character work for Buffy. To see her lost and grieving it was emotional. And to see her help Anne and in the process find her self again was well done.
5. City Of - Just Angel being Angel. I love it. I love Doyle. I enjoy Cordelia. "It started with a girl..."
6. The Freshman - On the one hand, I dislike Season 4, and I generally don't like this episode because I think Sunday is stupid but what I do appreciate is the concept of Buffy in feeling lost. The first day of College can feel scary and overwhelming. Buffy is out of her depth and I really like to see her overcome those things. She wants to hold on to the past but she is really forced to confront her future. Buffy looks great, the show has a bit of a brighter feel to it. I can appreciate the transitional feel of the episode of the show, showing us that its a new chapter.
7. Deep Down - There is alot I like here and alot I don't. Mainly the Cangel is the part I don't: "I need Cordy, now" (GIANT EYE ROLL),. I love the Wesley and Lilah stuff while I don't ship them I could watch a whole show about them. But then of course, what redeems this is the beautiful quote: "Nothing in the world is the way it ought to be. - It's harsh, and cruel. - But that's why there's us. Champions...We live as though the world was what it should be, to show it what it can be."
8. Bargaining part 1 - This episode is less about Buffy to me and more about her friends and how they deal/cope with her loss so I appreciate it for that. I don't like the decisions made on Spike in this episode and so you know... meh.
9. Conviction - It's ok. I mean, I like the look of the new set. I really like Angel in a suit, everyone kind of adapting to their new surroundings is funny. It's not the worst for me, but then again I like Seaosn 5 AtS.
10. Heartthrob - I don't buy that this is how Angel would come back after Buffy died. I needed them to show me more grief. I don't believe it. I don't like Cordy in this episode, her whole "talk to me, tell me how you feel" crap is annoying. If I head cannon that the James guy is really Spike and he is grieving Buffy in the sad pathetic Romeo way the episode works better for me. I don't understand the exchange between James and Angel on the subway. The only redeeming quality in the show is Fred. She is sweet and timid and crushing on Angel hard and I like how Angel is trying to be there for her despite his own problems.
11. Buffy v. Dracula - I appreciate the ballsy move to pull Dracula into the lore of Buffyverse but I think they failed miserably at it. First of all if Dracula was supposed to be hot, he wasn't. They could have opted for an "Ian Somerhalder" kinda guy so that we could buy that people were hot for Dracula. The whole Riley being jealous of Dracula (who had put Buffy into a trance) and lumping him together with Angel (what the what?) is stupid. I felt lost throughout and also it didn't set up Season 5 all that well at all. It felt like a throw away episode instead of a season opener.
12. Lessons - It's Season 7, its all pretty meh.

NeonSlayer

I so agree about Hearthrob and the horrible Cangel in Deep Down

1. Bargaining - This is one of my all time favourite episodes. It is almost like they thought, 'Hey! Let's write something WFB would like.' #WillowIsJesus This season seems to have lost Willow many of her fans, which is great for me, because I don't like sharing.
2. Welcome to the Hellmouth - This episode kickstarted the greatest show of all time. All the elements that makes it great are already present. It wastes no time with lengthy exposition.
3. When She Was Bad - If you did not get the memo after Prophecy Girl, we have decided to kick things up a notch.
4. Lessons - Season 7 felt like a s6 hangover to me. This episode certainly gives that impression. Dawn keeps things light, though. It is nice to see Dawn, Buffy and Xander do all right together.
5. Freshman - This is quite relatable.
6. Anne - It has some great moments, but it falls a little flat for me.
7. Buffy vs. Dracula - And here is something in honour of new viewers... It must be one of the laziest, underwhelming Buffy episodes ever. Buffy by the book.

NeonSlayer

I love that pic of Willow it almost makes me forget where the blood came from, although that gives it a XWP Siberian Amazons feel.
Just doing Buffy openers here.

Favorite to least favorite:

1. Anne
2. The Freshman
3. Welcome to the Hellmouth
4. Bargaining, both parts
5. When She Was Bad
6. Lessons
7. Buffy Vs Dracula

I love "Anne." I don't know why it gets so much hate. It shows Buffy closing in on herself, losing touch with who she is, trying to pass as someone she's not. She's heartbroken, thinks she's lost everything, and thinks she has nowhere to go. I love that she works at Helen's Kitchen. Perfect name for the diner. I like the Lily/Ricky story, and I LOVE her gradual realization that she is Buffy, not Anne, leading up to the immortal, peppy "I'm Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, and you are?" The hunga-munga, the Gandhi joke ("well, you know, if he was really pissed off"), the sweet scene where Buffy gives Lily her identity, Anne (who we see later on Angel), and then returns home to her mom. I think it's very well done and I always enjoy watching it.

On the other hand, Buffy Vs. Dracula is, for me, painful to watch. I love the first scene with the gang at the beach, having fun for once, but after that it's just not good. I don't like the actor who played Dracula or his accent, and I hate Xander's "master....bator" joke. And eating bugs, gross! Reminds me of the Mayor. Anyway, in general, one of my least favorite episodes, and my least favorite opener by far.

Also just gonna tackle Buffy-I haven't seen Angel enough to really make a decision.

Best to worst for me:
1. The Freshman
2. Anne
3.When She Was Bad
4. Welcome to the Hellmouth
5. Lessons
6. Bargaining
7. Buffy vs. Dracula

I found that incredibly difficult, actually! I tend to like the openers but they don't leave as much of an impact as the finale's so it made it more difficult for me to sort them.
  • I went with The Freshman for #1 because I think it does a fantastic job of opening up a season that is a huge transition for the show, with Buffy suddenly finding herself overwhelmed and having to rediscover her place in the new school.
  • Anne comes in at #2 for me. I love the end when Buffy lets go of Anne and is willing to return to the life she ran away from.
  • I put When She Was Bad at #3 because I just generally enjoy watching that episode for some reason, especially compared to a number of early S2 episodes for me.
  • Welcome to the Hellmouth is super nostalgic and I like watching where everything started.
  • I put Lessons at #5 (will be rewatching soon, so I may change my mind), but I love that the show takes it back to the beginning and of course that ending sequence is great.
  • Bargaining is 6th for me because though I love bits and pieces of the episode, I have the urge to skip through some stuff, like the biker demons. I actually hate the biker demons. Most of the moments I love from this time come during Afterlife.
  • Buffy vs. Dracula is last. I like the episode but I think it has the least impact for an opener. Especially the opener of my favorite season!

1 - Anne
2 - The Freshman
3 - When She Was Bad
4 - Bargainning
5 - Conviction
6 - Deep Down
7 - Welcome To The Hellmouth
8 - City Of
9 - Lessons
10 - Buffy VS Dracula
11 - Hearthrob
12 - Judgement

"Anne" captures the first day of School perfectly, and "Freshman" captures the first day of College perfectly, as far as the art goes. Other than that, I frankly never understood why Buffy characters can't resolve their personal problems over the summer. As for Angel, I suppose "Deep Down" is a rare cliffhanger, and has my favorite Fred moment. But because it's season four, it's become massive betrayal for me.
