Angelus was great as a villain because of the lightheated and almost joking way he did terrible things. Also, he knew the Scoobies well, and knew how to get under their skin.

Please give a bit of info on why you ranked them how you did!

 

[The Scourge]

1. Wolfram & Hart

Wolfram & Hart were the ultimate Big Bad. They not only knew how to get their hands dirty and kill, but their grasp of the law left them practically untouchable.


2. Angelus

Twisted. Sadistic. Hilarious


3. Mayor Wilkins

He's a pretty nice guy when you forget that he wants to turn into a demon and eat everyone.


4. Spike (before he joined the Scoobies)

Back before he was Love's bitch, he was a fearsome adversary.


5. Drusilla (Buffy S2)

Beautiful, crazy, and had a child-like air about her. For a vampire she greatly cared about Angelus, Darla, and Spike.


6. The Master

The actor really made this role.


7. Holtz

A sympathetic man who kind of deserves his revenge.

Not including those in AtS (though I loved W&H)...

1.Angelus
Because of the emotional turmoil he put Buffy through, and the great episodes we got from him.
2.The Mayor
The face of Affably Evil. He's just so... Well, except for getting defeated as a supposedly all-powerful snake demon by the high school. The acting was top-notch too.

3.Glory
She was annoying, but in a good way. So ditzy and yet so powerful.


4.Dark Willow
Season 6 wasn't the best of seasons, but Dark Willow was interesting.


5.The First
In the first episodes of S7, it was really intimidating. And it allowed us to see the return of many dead characters to taunt and manipulate the protagonists.



6. Adam
I think an episode where I really loved Adam was when he noticed something wasn't right in "Superstar". And also when he said that vampires feared death especially as immortal beings. But he was kind of bland.
7. The Master
Bleh. Bleh. Bleh. Corny, hokey...

 

[Whirlwind]

1. Angelus - Perfect big bad as he knew the heroes better than any of them and had a big emotional connection to Buffy.

2. The Mayor - Great villain, could be charming, funny, and I liked that he genuinely cared about Faith.

3. Glory - She was fun to watch and a real threat.

4. Dark Willow - She was part of an interesting storyline. I liked that Xander was the one to stop her in the end.

5. The First - I enjoyed this villain most when it was manipulating people.

6. The Master - Not as interesting as many of the others, but he had his moments. I especially liked him in The Wish.

7. Adam - I'm not the biggest fan, but he had some good scenes. I liked his interactions with Spike.

 

[JCoatsworth]

1. Dark Willow
The whole storyline of Season 6 is really great and the fact that Willow is one of the Scoobies makes it even more interesting and complicated.

2. Mayor Wilkins
Very cool and likable character.

3. Glory
She seems a bit like a comic book villain to me, with the two people sharing one body and Glory's impatience and insanity.

4. Angelus
Like Dark Willow, he makes the storyline quite complicated, because Buffy's in love with the man he used to be, and if he dies, Angel dies too.

5. The First
I like that it isn't really a opponent they can beat in a normal fight. It's just evil, not a person.

Angelus

For me his destroying the world was the worst part of his villainy because it was uncharacteristic of his usual subtle, artistic evil. For me, his evil was personal and that is what made his evil so effective. It wasn't just because of Buffy and Angel's relationship, Angelus is the sort of enemy that gets under your skin, who makes your personal nightmares real.

A lot of people talk about the villains that caused the greatest physical threat to Buffy, but arguably no one has personally affected her as much as Angelus. I've never seen Buffy look so shaken by any other big bad than when she received those flowers from him with the note attached reading "Soon".

If you want a villain who doing it 'For the Evuls' then Angelus is your manpire.

The Mayor

Mainly because he's so amusing. I love the fact he doesn't give killing a bunch of kids a second thought but asks the vampires who are going to do the killing to refrain from swearing. I mean, I get it. Evil? Sure, but that's no reason to display a certain degree of ettiquette.

However, aside from his apparent displays of sociopathy his human side was somewhat intriguing. He appeared to love his wife as he stayed with her even when she became bitter and jealous of his youth.

His father's love for Faith was also obvious. He is a prime example that even though one can feel no remorse for their evil, they can still value love and loyalty.

Wolfram and Hart

I've always preferred the villains on Angel for many reasons but if we are talking about power, who is more powerful than W&H? Ultimately, I believe they are more powerful than any villain that Buffy has ever faced, because how you do destroy them. Effectively they trumped the FE by neutralizing their end of the world so it doesn't interfere with their end of the world.

So far they've never even been close to be defeated and as far as we know their apocalypse is still on schedule.

Jasmine

I couldn't decide whether I preferred Jasmine or Holtz as a villain but the reason I prefer Jasmine as a villain is because arguably she isn't a villain. Jasmine's defeat was really a mixed blessing depending on your viewpoint. Most people agree with Angel instinctually becase the right to our free will seems as though it should be defended if not for any other reason other than it's intutive.

Jasmine's methods may be questionable but it's arguable that she really wanted the same thing as Team Angel did: To make the world a better place. Angel's counter arguments seem to echo what we as the audience would feel, however it's based upon moral absolutes that Jasmine claimed didn't exist and from a Utilatarian perspective, her actions can be considered noble in a way. More people were potentially happier because of Jasmine and more miserable because of what Angel did. Is the happiness real? How do we define what real happiness is? If theoretically it's a causal event anyway (unless we completely choose our emotions) then Jasmine is simply another causal event like any other.

So for it's the battle of minds between Angel and Jasmine that I found interesting. Also I found it more easier relate to that antogonists are rarely easy to decern or to be defeated.

Holtz

For me it was the tragic story of a man hunting a monster who ended up becoming a monster hunting hunting a man.

What I also liked it that it's not as simply a defeating him as a enemy.

I've had a long think about this, very difficult (I am indecisive by nature) but this is how it stands...

1. Glory - tremendous big bad, brilliantly acted IMO, she was just so engaging and exciting to watch - I think she steals every scene she is in.

2. Angelus - "To kill this girl, you have to love her."

3. The Mayor

"Who knows, with any luck, they'll kill each other. Then everyone's a winner. Everyone, of course, meaning me."
"Do you think he was going to betray me? Oh, now, that's a horrible thought. And now he's dead, I'll never have the chance to scold him."
"Well, this is exciting. A Slayer, up for murder one. That's sunshine and roses to me, it really is."
"Shh, here comes my favorite part. Where the Slayers see us in the hall together, thick as thieves. Oh, wait, we are thieves. And worse."
"There's nothing uncool about healthy teeth and bones!"
"That's one spunky little girl you've raised. I'm gonna eat her."
"And boys? Let's watch the swearing."

Just too many classic lines to mention, but those are some of my favourites

4. The Master - I remember having nightmares about him when I first watched it. He also had some hilarious lines:

"I am weary, and their deaths will bring me little joy...... Of course, sometimes a little is enough." - ABSOLUTE CLASSIC haa
"Very few vampires are cunning enough to live as long as I."
"Kids. They only visit when they need something."
"I've lost my appetite for this one. She keeps looking at me. I'm trying to eat and she looks at me."
"You've got something in your eye."
"If I can face my fear, it cannot master me."
"So! This is the Slayer! You're prettier than the last one."

-Angelus
He was just so devious and ruthless, his knowledge of the scoobies as well as thee Angel investigations team made it so he could not only physically cause havoc but mentally as well. His lack of remorse or empathy made him the more vicious and cruel.

-Dark Willow
She had the potential to be the most destructive of all the big bads. She had access to nearly unlimited power and if it wasnt for Xander appealing to the normal Willow there would have been absolutely no stopping her from destroying the world.

-Wolfram and Hart
Demons with seemingly unlimited resources and power in the world of men and magical beings. What can be more dangerous to the work of champions then a foe with the legal means of stopping them at every turn? lol

-Glory
A demonic god with powers seemingly unrivalved by anyone on earth. If it werent for the convenient war hammer apparently having the power of the gods taken from Anyas ex they wouldnt have had away to stop her.

-The First
The ability to manipulate the scoobies and their emotions proved to be one of the more effective courses of actions against them on multiple occasions. Also having the ability to instill creatures with incredible power proved pretty formidable as well with the original Ubervamp ( I assume it had been infused with extra power since it was so much harder to kill than the others) as well as with Caleb.

Honorable mention:

Spike: As a villain he was fun but not particularly very formidable.

Drusilla: I find her innocence and unstable behavior kind of endearing but like Spike she wasn't as dangerous as some of the others.

The Master and Adam: I found both of these big bad's quite annoying lol.
