We have four super powered champions for justice: two Slayers (Buffy and Faith), and two ensouled vampires (Angel and Spike). Four admittedly awesome fighters. But how do they rank? This is my assessment, argue if you will, but justify your arguments.
1) Buffy- This goes without saying, simply because she is THE Chosen One. She is the standard by which all the others are measured.
2) Spike- (No, not Faith, and I'll explain why in a moment) Spike, aside from having killed two Slayers previously, one when he was little more than a fledgling, has the natural instincts of a warrior. He doesn't run from danger, he seeks it out, and the tougher his opponent, the better he likes it and the more dangerous he becomes. The perfect example of this is the demon he fought in "Get It Done." It was obviously more powerful than he was, but he beat it through sheer bulldog perseverance. One might say that when the gong gets toughest, Spike comes into his element.
3) Angel- I rate Angel as being below Spike and Buffy because both have beaten him at least once in the past. Granted, Angel beat Spike several ti mes before their final slug-it-out fighting over the Cup of Perpetual Torment, but I think that that was the first time Spike really put everything into if, finally overcoming the natural intimidation he'd been feeling from Angel for over a century. The match was close, but by Angel's own admission, when Spike wanted the prize the most, he kicked his grand sire's ass.
4) Faith- And why, you might ask, do I rank the second half of the Chosen Two on the bottom? In a single word, EXPERIENCE. Faith got almost all of her fighting experience during a single season, plus a brief guest shot the next year. Other than that, she was either in a coma or locked away in prison, where, admittedly, the inmates were tough, but nothing to compare with the residents of the hellmouth. Faith is, therefore, the least experienced fighter of the four. Granted, she beat Angel in Season 4 of his series, but she had to resort to trickery, in the form of vampire LSD to accomplish it.
In rating the four fighters above, I must qualify my beliefs by saying that no one beat the competition decisively, in fact I believe any two of the four would be fairly evenly matched. I do, however, stand by my findings and the evidence that supports them. Argue if you will, but please give a better reason for your beliefs thanjust "..everyone knows..."
