Boston Strangler (2023) 6.5/10
One of those 'inspired by actual events' kinda films, because this film- whilst sticking mostly to things as they happened-posits that Albert DeSalvo might not have been the one who murdered 13 women. It's an intriguing take, well acted, tense & atmospheric and catches the spirit of the times; of a fearful city and a police department under-pressure and borderline incompetent.
The film has a strongly feminist view of the events and investigation itself, which is great for most of the runtime, but lapses into misandry at the end by insinuating that 'there might have been many Boston Stranglers' or maybe any man could be a Boston Strangler or some crap, ignoring the fact that quite a few men were trying their hardest to catch the guy.
Whilst some may question the true identity of the Boston Strangler I've never seen a credible criminal psychologist claim that the murders were committed by different people. That conspiratorial takes the shine of this otherwise well-crafted film.

Jurassic World Rebirth - 8/10

Genuinely really enjoyed this. I don’t know if it was low expectations after the abysmal Dominion, but I thought this one was really fun and well done. I’d rank them 1-2-JW-Rebirth-3-Fallen Kingdom—————————Dominion.

K-Pop Demon Hunters - 9/10

Runs a little long imho but it’s just a genuinely fantastic animated film made by the same people who did Spider-Verse. Really surprised by how good this was, and the music was great (even though I’m not into K-Pop).

How to Train Your Dragon (live action) - 8/10

It’s the original movie with a few new extras tacked on. Still works, still good.

Superman (2025) - 7.5/10

Nicholas Holt is a fantastic Lex Luthor, channeling his inner Mark Zuckerberg, most importantly he feels like a threat. Rachel Bronsnan is a strong Lois and has good chemistry with pretty much everyone. The film mostly gets a nice mix of old and new. It crams a bit too much into just over 2 hours is my main gripe (some characters could have been cut, others needed a bit more time), but very enjoyable.

Bottom of the barrel trash, with almost no redeeming features or anything to talk about. You sort of have to make your own fun. So tell me why would people have sparklers in Mosh pit!??? 😛

Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) 8/10
I almost didnt watch this one because IMDB has it rated as a 5.9/10. I'm really glad that I did though!

I absolutely loved this movie! It's very atmospheric, and the cinematography is amazing, with a soundtrack that is exceptional, especially "Sentionauts."

It was perfectly psychology creepy, and explores topics like MK Ultra, social oppression, shadow self, etc. It's a very slow paced, and slow burn type of film, the plot is lacking in many ways, and the ending is not really good, it's definitely not for everyone, but it was perfect for me.

Im going to need to do a few rewatches to fully appreciate it, but it's likely to become an all time favorite film for me.

Superman - 4/10

I really wanted to like this. And I think it’s good in areas, but this thing is just a mess from head to toe for me.

The villain plot makes 0 sense, especially egregious given that the villain is Lex Luthor. His plan is to start a war to kill Superman, which whatever, fine, but the war doesn’t even really matter when it comes to “kill Superman”. He finds what he needs to legally “kill Superman” by the ridiculous government’s rule about 20 mins into the movie and the war is just kinda there. I also have exactly 0 idea why you’d even be a henchman for Lex Luthor. In this movie he rips open a hole in reality and everyone cheers and claps because…that’ll show Superman???

Lex is cartoonishly evil in this, to the point that I genuinely don’t think whoever wrote him even likes or knows the character. Lex is someone who is very much jealous of Superman and dislikes him because he works outside the system and does a better job. In this movie, Lex gloats to Superman about how he has a pocket dimension prison where he psychotically puts everyone he doesn’t like, talks about how he’s going to slaughter Krypto, shows Superman his army of social media monkeys, and hates Superman because…he’s the villain of the film. There is no really advanced scheming, everyone ignores his obvious psychotic antics and homicidal behavior because we wouldn’t have a film otherwise, and he is let off the hook about everything EXCEPT making a deal with a foreign US allied nation. That’s where they draw the line. But almost destroying the entire planet is a-ok.

The actions scenes are cool but there’s such a lack of tension in them. There’s one near the end where some nanotech woman and Ultraman are beating Supes and you think, oh boy, how will he get out of this one. Well turns out he escapes because…he’s the main character so he’s ok. No explanation on how he somehow is stronger than their research or science dictates. He just is.

Speaking of fights, the end setpiece feels like it was the plots of 2 movies smashed together. There’s the war plot, which is relevant, and then there’s a ridiculously out of control plot about how there’s a rip in the fabric of reality and everything’s getting sucked in. Superman basically does nothing to resolve the B-plot and yet that’s the one he’s involved in. The A-plot is relegated to the Justice Gang and a horrendously rushed and under-realized Metamorpho. The fight with Ultraman is resolved when Superman has Krypto destroy Lex’s flying cameras, something that makes Luthor look like an idiot for not thinking about for more than a second.

This movie is so beyond cheesy and corny with the ridiculous “person looks longingly at Superman because he’s a good person” shtick. Literally every time Superman saves someone the movie pauses so you can point and say how awesome he is for saving lives. It even does it when he takes time out of a battle to save a squirrel.

I am so tired of James Gunn movies having a moment where a character has an action scene with a flying red light trail object while licensed music plays in the background. It was cool in Guardians 1, cooler in Guardians 2, and felt kinda played out in Guardians 3. He does that same thing here with Mr Terrific and it literally feels like you could swap him out for Yondu and lose/gain nothing whatsoever.

This movie has no individual musical identity of its own. The themes and swells are all recycled tracks from 70s Superman.

The whole plot is basically ripped straight out of the Batman: The Telltale Series game, right down to the ridiculous “parents are actually secretly evil” twist.

People turn on Superman literally on a dime. He’s great and celebrated, then a video that could 100% be baloney airs and literally everyone on earth hates him and wants him killed. Then later they just seem to forget about it and love him again. They only seem to like Superman when he’s saving them and then when he’s doing literally anything else they hate him.

Oh, and Supergirl shows up. And I don’t think I could be less interested in a project with her. In this movie she is pretty much a frat girl that goes around the galaxy getting drunk. Absolute character assassination.

This movie to me is proof that if Justice League was released today with none of the behind the scenes knowledge of how much of a mess it was, people would be saying how hopeful it was and how amazing it is and how it “gets Superman right”. If this is what the future of the DCEU looks like, I could not be less interested.

I read her memoir recently and decided to watch this 2019 doco, it was a really interesting and at times heartbreaking look into Paris Hilton. She goes into a lot of detail about the "Teen Reform" camps she was sent to and the trauma she experienced there and she meets up with other survivors to help bring light to the Troubled Teen Industry. The doco felt real and well-made and it shows sides to the heiress that are not usually seen.

They need to make a documentary of the Mara Sisters (Kate & Rooney). They're from 2 dynastic football families (Rooneys/Steelers & Maras/Giants)
Who became successful actors. One of which is married to Hollywood 'royalty'. That's got Netflis doc series written allover it! 😉

Interesting concept and themes, but the acting was patchy at times, the film bloated (coming in at 2.5 hours), the pacing was off, and with so many characters there's little connection with them. Nevertheless, I did get to stare at Richard Madden, so there's always a silver lining. 😉

Saltburn (2023) 2/10: A shallow, mean but superficially lush movie that shamelessly apes the plot of The Talented Mr. Ripley but sadly has nothing interesting or insightful to say about class or queerness or anything else besides 'Rich People Bad'. The main character is creepy and unsympathetic and the ending is the most Tumblr thing I've seen onscreen for a good long while. Fail.


D.O.A (1988) 5.5/10 A noir remake starring Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. The noir murder mystery remains compelling but the jarring eighties synth-score, bad sound design and needlessly flashy direction lessen the overall plot. The acting overall is strong but overall I'd stick with the original.

This one is a gem! Great cast, great acting, great storyline, and stunning visuals. I absolutely loved this movie!

(Rewatch) Jurassic Park (1993) - 10/10
Just a perfect, brilliant film. It is the oldest and yet the effects have aged way better than in some (if not most) of the sequels. The writing is crisp and the pacing so well done. All the characters are given just enough depth that you care about them, about what happens to them, and all the genres combine to make a masterpiece, if you ask me.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) - 4/10
Absolute garbage. So many issues that I don't even care enough to get to right now, so I'll mention my three biggest gripes with this - 1. Spielberg completely forgot what made the first one (and Jaws) so great, which was not showing the monster(s) too much or it'll ruin the tension. 2. Sarah Harding. I literally sat there screaming at her for a minute straight at one point, I genuinely just wanted her to die. 3. Waaay too many characters, cliched and done to death. Felt like they were just there to be cannon fodder so we could get deaths but not risk the characters that they needed to survive.

Despite this, there were a few things I liked, mostly coming from my favorite character from the first movie; Dr. Ian Malcolm. I liked his reason for going back, it was emotional and it was understandable. Often times in films (sequels) like this, you're left wondering why the hell someone would put themselves through this again, but this was believable, even if Sarah wasn't remotely worth the risk, imo. I also like his line near the end, to the newphew. "Now you're John Hammond."

Jurassic Park III (2001) - 7.5/10
Wow, what an improvement!

Cast was much better, characters way better written and, guess what? They learned their lessons from the last failure - less monsters in every shot made for better tension and less characters that we can flesh out more. Granted, I walked in knowing which characters had plot armor and was right at the end, but it was still such an improvement on the last one. A few gripes; I wish Sattler was more than just a cameo. I hate that they felt the need to outdo the T. Rex by giving us a dinosaur bigger and badder and without the same weakness. Nowhere near enough raptor action, though what we got was really good. I miss the clever raptors from the first one; they keep saying they're smart, but they don't show us much of it at all.

Edited: wanted to say they also managed to give us a believable reason for why Alan returned despite his history; money and a promise that they would only fly over the island. He has, after all, been shown to be a bit naive about some things in the first film, so we know that he's a bit too trusting now and then.
