Murder Mystery - 0/10

Absolutely dreadful. My sister selected this and we watched it on a whim.

The mystery? Sucks. You don’t need to be Hercule Poirot to figure this one out, friends. The jokes? Nonexistent. Not even the faintest chuckle will be heard when you watch this absolute donkey. The product placement? Out of control. Many times they go over and name by frickin name stupid Allegra and Claritin. Like every ten minutes. The obligatory Adam Sandler vacation? Yep! This time he goes off to Monaco, and I swear to God there’s even a clip show part of it where they show off the racing.

Literally no one in this film is a likable person. The main characters are genuinely awful to each other. Adam Sandler is a crappy husband who constantly is sarcastic and rude to his wife and Jennifer Aniston is so self centered and mean to him that I genuinely wonder why they are even married. A major plot point is that they are not very well off, but yet he buys them this trip to Europe because she always wanted to go.

So naturally…that never comes up as a “wow this guy cares about me.” She actually looks at it later and says that he’s a liar and an idiot because he didn’t have the money for the trip but didn’t tell her the truth. This is all not to mention that the both of them are complete morons. They get invited to some hyper-rich party because…well I really have no idea. Because Luke Evans likes Jennifer Aniston??? But they see this as completely normal and not at all weird, DESPITE the fact that they literally JUST met this guy. Why did he do this? To set them up for the murder? NOPE. Just because he felt like it I guess! Never explained.

Literally no element of this movie is unpredictable either. If someone tells you something stupid, guess what. It’s coming back later! Oh, he’s a horrible shot? Well you can guarantee that he’s going to magically become a crack shot when he needs to at the end. He never made detective? Gee, I wonder if he’ll miraculously become a “great” one by the end who gets the promotion because of all his hard “work”!

Avoid this dreck at all costs. I feel actively stupider for having watched it.

Fear Street Part 1: 1994 (2022) Eh, 4/10
...Wow. I had heard such great things about this Trilogy that I thought 'why not binge all 3' but I ended up stopping after this one because...it was a lot. Not scary, nope. It's very safe. And I wouldn't call it much of a slasher, more of a teen drama with a few lacklustre kills sprinkled in. Nor does it feel very '90's. Sure, there's the incredibly unsubtle soundtrack that, like Suicide Squad, crams in many recognisable songs of the era to set the scenes but the dire dialogue is pure Gen z. This film wears the 90's like a skin-suit.
The plot, such as it is, is that there are two towns; Shadyside; which is badness on a national scale because of so many slasher-style murders, and Sunnyvale, which is totally awesome and well off, existing right next to each other. If you think that's not jarring as hell then this movie will be fully immersive i'm sure. There's stuff about a witch curse legend that is, again, rather unsubtly stated outright instead of being weaved into the narrative or anything.
This would all be much more forgivable if we had anything like likeable characters for our lurid tale. Instead we get Deena. Yeesh. Rarely have a seen such a botched lead character; nasty, depressive, jealous, entitled, kinda murder-y and overall callous about the lives of her friends. Plus some out-right 'straight-hate' in one scene as she is jealous of the girl she broke up with. If she were a dude she would be rightly universally loathed, but because she's a poor, gay, poc she is instead somewhat popular with YouTube essayists. Oh well. I feel bad for poor Sam, who seemed like a sweet, if a bit bland, girl who had escaped a toxic ex, only to be targeted by a dread witches curse pretty much because of said ex.
Anyway Deena is awful and kinda tanks the film for me, every other character is more likeable than her and yet, she is our Final Girl. Urgh.
There are myriad other problems but overall I would call this a very safe and bloodless tale so far, but maybe Part II- set at a summer camp in the 70's- might be a bit sharper.

I tried watching this AGAIN the other week and I couldn’t get past the hour mark because it was just so dreadful. Deena has always been my absolute least favorite element of this thing and she is a horrendous main character. Horribly unlikeable, ugly, and bizarrely vindicated by the film.

People talk about this movie like it’s the bomb dot com but I just think it’s absolutely painful Netflix bottom of the barrel content.

Bad Influence (1990) - 6/10

Another one of these early 90s yuppie thrillers which has aged badly (Curtis Hansen did another one The Hand That Rocks the Crandle 😀 ). The leads are both good, there's some goofy fun to be had, but overall its predictable, silly and forgettable. Also I'm a little miffed James Spader was more into Lisa Zane than Marica Cross🙄

One of the worst titles for any films. Ryan Philippe has never been more miscast. Tim Robbins hamming it up was fun at least. The plot is just as dumb as The Net maybe more so (at least that had peak Sandra Bullock). It’s at least amusing in places 😆

Perhaps it's just me, but the end-credits scene I found pretty cheesy/cringe. It dragged on way too long.
Aside from that, it's an okay movie. Not great, not horrible.

Needed something mindless while I did crafts yesterday, so put on The Vanishing - still wish I could find the original Dutch version to watch, but until then, I'll just keep rewatching this one. Even though it gets less good each time - I do still love Jeff Bridges in this role, though don't know why giving the character a weird accent was necessary. 6/10

Little women (2019) 2/5. Doesn't matter which version I watch, its always boring. This version just seemed to be the latest stars lumped together. Couldn't see the characters through the actors at all. In saying that, I've never enjoyed the story. It was the bane of my teenage existence when every girl loved it, except for me.

IMDB gives this a 4.7/10, so we have about the same opinion. The story is about sadistic men who go into the woods with a woman and hunt her down and kill her. But the heroine Veronica, played by Abagail Breslin, has been trained from childhood by a martial artist / trainer to kill anyone who does that.

Companion (2025) - 8/10

The least you know going in the best with this one. Its a strong cast with Sophie Thatcher (who really can't do no wrong right now, and is the next Jodie Foster IMO), and Jack Quaid perfect as the leads, but there's a solid supporting cast too including Harvey Guillen (What we Do in the Shadows) and a small role for Rupert Friend (Homeland). Its a really sharp satire, with a smart script, decent tension and a couple of really well planned out twists (twists I didn't really see coming, but also logical ones which even if you do are still satisfying). Very little complaints, just the odd nitpics.

I don't know how this movie got a 6.3/10 on IMDB, it wasn't all that coherent. Scarlett Johansson plays an alien who picks up hitchhikers in Scotland and preys on them. Part of its ratings success might be the full frontal nudity of Scarlett plus several of the men.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988) - 5/10

Well its a very messy sequel, and messes up some of the genius of 3. The characters are mostly whatever?! But most of the dreams and horror moments are well done. Quippy Freddy is good fun too, "How's Sweet Fresh meat" "How's that for a WET dream" 😛 . Plus the final girl isn't too bad, she just needs better friends😉

This movie is on Prime UK and Tubi in the US. Its really worth checking out, though is very shocking and sad at times. So trigger warning.

This is a solid enough action film and I would probably rate it higher if it didn't come across as having ripped off A Quiet Place.

In A Quiet Place, insectile monsters have descended from the skies. They are fast, lethal and heavily armoured and most of the population is rapidly wiped out. They hunt by sound and as long as the survivors keep quiet, they are safe. By the end of the film, a weakness is discovered.

MI5 (2015) - 7.5/10

It was a little slow and not all that much in the action/adventure mold, but the IMDB rating of 6.2 was unnecessarily punitive. The story is of a botched handover of a terrorist who escapes and a disgraced intelligence chief and a recent recruit must join forces to capture the bad guy and see who in the department sabotaged the handover. This is more of a realistic op than anything undertaken by James Bond and follows the relatively slow pace of a real op. But this is a good movie and better than most spy movies. In my time, I have met spies and most of them are proud of the work they have done, but they can't tell you about it. The attitude in the intelligence service is like the song "I'm In with the In Crowd" - they know things you don't.
