Hello My Name is Doris - 10. I thought they added a few jokes I definitely could have lived w/o but it's such an endearingly eccentric tale. I really like Sally Field. If you don't like huge age differences in relationships skip it lol. It's a comfort food movie for me, the cast is really good.

The Holiday - 7. I preferred Kate Winslet's story in this one. Cameron Diaz's character was incredibly irritating. Jude Law was Jude Law, he let his looks do the acting. Jack Black was adorable. It's a total fantasy with no basis in reality and I'm all for that once in awhile.

The Last Movie Star - 8. This movie surprised me. Burt Reynolds is part of my generation's childhood - Smoky and the Bandit, anyone ? - and wow, he really touched me with his performance. I actually cried. Ariel Winter was excellent.

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) - 6.5/10
Bit of a cult fave for some. Think it would have hit me better if I saw it at the time. A bit overrated IMO. Not subtle enough for my liking.

48 HRS (1982) - 7.5/10
I don't know if Murphy and Nolte loved each other off screen, or hated each other, either way there's a spark and fantastic chemistry. The action scenes are very well done and reminds why Walter Hill was one of the best 80s action directors. An underrated Buddy cop film.

Hellow Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987) - 6.5/10
Well this was a surprise. Prom Night meets The Exorcist/Evil Dead 🤣 A young Michael Ironside is good value and there's enough antics to keep it watchable.
 
Obsession - 8/10
Brilliant and terrifying, this was an intense watch but definitely worth it. Inde Navarette in particular was phenomenal.

Misery - 9/10
Finally got around to seeing this classic and it was amazing. Tense, terrifying and so well filmed not to mention the amazing Kathy Bates who was terrifying as Annie Wilkes. I'm just mad at myself for not seeing it sooner,

Freedom Writers (2007) 8/10

Think of a mix between To Sir, With Love and Dangerous Minds. FW is based on a true story. It was available to watch for free on YT so I gave it a go. Really enjoyed it, worth watching.
 
Poseidon (2006) - 5/10

Predictably terrible with cardboard characters and barely any plot, but the actual capsizing of the ship and all of the bigger "disaster" moments were well done and fun to watch. Was very odd to see Captain Holt embrace Fergie as the ship went down 🤣🤣

That’s probably fair. I grew up on the original (it was always on TV lol), so have a lot of nostalgia.
I, Frankenstein. I didn't get through it so maybe I'm being too generous to rate it 2/10.

Someone wanted me to see a Frankenstein movie, and I mistook it for this, and it was free on Amazon. I started it last night and I just wasn't feeling it but thought maybe I'm just tired so put it off until just now.

Even so, I watched several minutes before giving it up. It had a couple of interesting things going for it, but it was pretty much just action without substance, an excuse for CGI over character (not to say the acting was bad but they had nothing good to work with), and almost everyone, good guy and bad, felt a bit like an edgelord without much, or even any, depth or complexity.

Ultimately, I didn't care for any of the characters, so I gave up on it.

Technically, it is a Frankenstein movie - just not one of the better ones!
Obsession -10/10 I love psycho stalker movies and this took it to the max and beyond

Frankenstein (2025)- 7/10 I never really cared for the story but it was well done, gorgeous cinematography and Mia Goth is a great actor

@Mr Trick I agree with you about In the Mood for Love. I think it's an exceptional film, but I definitely have to be in the mood to watch it, and that doesnt happen very often.

Only watched two films last week...

Call Northside 777 (1948) - 7/10
A very enjoyable film noir that is based on a true story. My only gripe really is that I think they could have shaved off 20+ minutes and still told the same story, as the film felt a bit drawn out to me.

Contamination (1980) - 4.5/10
I always get a kick out of watching these low budget Italian sci-fi films. If nothing else they are usually good for a laugh at how bad they are. This one did not disappoint. 😂
 
Watched a few things lately:

Anora (2024) - 6.5/10
Good. Albeit slightly overrated? Mikey's performance was great. Oscar worthy though? Couldn't say as I haven't seen any of the other nominees and their performances.

And now from 2024, going way back to 1954...

Creature from the Black Lagoon - 7/10
Really enjoyed it, feels like Jaws took some musical inspiration from CFTBL.

BlacKkKlansman 2018 - 9/10
What a fantastic movie, and based on a true story. Kudos to the director, the story flows perfectly. That said, it is a tough and emotional watch, for obvious reasons. The moments of humour are a welcome break from the heavy subject matter.


And onto the documentaries:
Inside the Mind of a Cat - 7/10
Cute, informative. If you're a cat owner/familiar with cats, a chunk of this documentary isn't anything new to the viewer.

Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea - 6/10
This is about the Costa Concordia that capsized in 2012. It includes footage from some of the survivors from inside the ship, and interviews with them.

Had potential to be a great documentary, but wasn't. Left out a number of facts, lacked in details, and felt like it ended abruptly.

The Egyptian Mummies: Immortality Unwrapped - 7/10
A three-part series. If you like anything on Ancient Egypt (as I do), it's worth seeing.

Nice! I'm also into ancient cultures, especially Egyptian. I'll look into that documentary!
The Visitor (1979) - 4/10
This one is all sorts of bizarre! I did enjoy it though. The pigeon scene was hilarious! Pigeons have never been so terrifying! 🤣

Odd Man Out (1947) - 8/10

Saw Odd man out last year. Mostly liked it, but some bits were quite random, and bit clunky, plus sign of times some really ropey Irish accents,lol. But mostly solid stuff.
The Odyssey- 8/10 very well done, great cinematography and not slow at all really for a 3 hour movie but I don’t think I’ll ever really want to watch it again

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die- 6/10 bizarre but entertaining at least
