So, this random thought just popped into my head as I was editing a new video.

I was watching the Tara/Willow scene in 'The Body' where Willow is crying and a complete mess and Tara is trying her best to comfort her and I started to think, who would I be in that scene if I put myself in that situation? At first I thought Tara but when I thought about it more I wasn't so sure.

And now I'm bringing the question to Buffy-Boards, but widening it a little. If you were in the same situation as the Scoobies in 'the Body', who's reaction do you think you would be closest to experiencing. I don't know, I just thought it was an interesting question. 🙂

great topic!
Well that really, really depends.

If Buffy was my best friend, I'd probably react similarly to Anya. No, I wouldn't ask tons of semi-disturbing questions, but I might suddenly breakdown, complaining about how unfair death is. I've known my best friend for about 13 years, so her mom is like a second mom to me. Joyce was kind of like a second mom to Willow.

The only reason why I'd react like Anya, as opposed to Willow, is because I tend to keep my emotions/feelings on the inside...which isn't so good. If I did suddenly breakdown, well that's exactly what it would be, sudden. I don't know. Maybe I'd be a combination of the two. I'd want to be there for my friend but at the same time, I don't think that I would constantly change my clothes haha. Overall, I felt like everyone's reactions made sense. If I was in Tara's position, I probably would have reacted like her. She'd been through the ordeal before and she didn't know Joyce that well. Anya's reaction did surprise me/turn me into a blubbering mess...but it definitely made a lot of sense.

How would you have reacted?

I think I'll be exactly like Anya in this situation...
Just trying to face the stupidity of the death and knowing that no one has the answers to all my questions.

Buffy. I generally always react to death like she did in The Body. Break down, go into denial, puke, pull self together, then just go numb.

Giles would be the closest I think. When it comes to death I don't really get emotional, I'm very stoic. I'd just be very quiet and help out when necessary.

Probably willow. I think I'd get all frazzled and focus my energy on one tiny thing, blowing it up as if it were more important than it was.

Nice new avie :)
Honestly, I get angry before I get sad, and always try to do something, not just sit around and grieve, so I would be like Xander, punchign the wall and thinking of who to blame, but coming around in the end to being uber comfortign to Buffy after some time to let it sink in

If it was my mother , Buffy, I think I would as shocked and numb as she is.
If not, Tara : I don't break down or show my emotions easily and I think I'd try to comfort my friend by being calm and "peaceful".

Giles would be the closest I think. When it comes to death I don't really get emotional, I'm very stoic. I'd just be very quiet and help out when necessary.

I think im the same way. For some reason I tend to hold emotions in. Im very much in touch with myself and find myself crying over stupid commercials.. maybe having kids changes you.. but when it comes to death, I might let out an instant minute of sadness but I eventually get to holding it on and observing others; carrying about others, and so on..

My reaction would be closer to Tara's, I think. I'm the calm in the crisis, or at least I try to be. I'm a counselor, after all. It's my job to be the "rock" when everyone else is in crisis.

I have never been in a situation like that but from other emotional things i have had happen to me and the way i reacted then i would say i am more likely to react like Buffy, go into shock more than anything else.

This is a hard question, because it all depends on who Joyce would be for me. But I'm known to be empathic, so even if it wasn't MY mother, I would feel bad for whoever it was, as long as I knew them well. But I wouldn't be a mess like Willow... More like Xander.

I think I'd be a lot like Willow. Trying to pull it together to be supportive to my friends and at the same time being really sad. I think the sweater thing is a perfect example on how I could act in a situation like that.

It honestly depends on how I know the person. Tara didn't know Joyce all that well, which is why she felt the need to be more comforting than comforted. Plus, she watched her own mother die. She knew what they needed, more or less.

My grandfather was like a father to my brothers and me. Mine wasn't in the picture. He finally succumbed to cancer when I was 12 years old. My older brother was 14. He reacted like Xander. I was a mixture of Willow and Anya. Everyone grieves differently, and I think that was the point of these scenes. To show that we all do things differently. There is no one right way to grieve.

I guess that depends on who's the person that has passed away.

Willow was probably much closer to Joyce than Tara. I think Tara hardly knew Joyce.

My reaction would maybe be a bit like Xander's. He was very sad and, according to Anya, cried at home, but he wasn't as out of it as Willow.
Tara tried to comfort Willow, but I'm not that much of a comforter.

Like others have said, that would really depend.

If I was close to Joyce like Willow and Xander, I would definitely cry and wouldn't know what to do. Actually, now that I think about it, I think I would react a lot like Willow reacted. I would be scared to come off in the wrong way, and I would be lost at how I should act. I would be devastated just like her, and yet I would want to try to be strong and be there for Buffy and Dawn.
