Reading Goals 2024

A few months ago I made a list of all the books I could think of where the title is just a character's name (Emma, Lolita, Anna Karenina, Carrie, David Copperfield, Will Grayson Will Grayson, etc) bc I wanted to read as many books of that ilk as I could find. Just tickles me to do a self-imposed reading challenge like that lol. If anyone has any other suggestions lmk!
Kristin Lavransdatter, Jean Christophe. The only books I can think of are older ones, since it's no longer the fashion to name books for the main character.

My 2023 goal was 75 books, and I crushed it at 76. But I just started a doctoral program.
Both things are impressive!

Thank you!
The on off button on my kindle has stopped working so whenever I want to use it I have to go upstairs, turn my PC on and connect my kindle to the PC. It doesn't take too long but has been enough to put me off reading recently! I might have to go back to traditional print books 🙂
After my kindle died I just used the app instead, have it both on my phone and tablet so it doesn't matter if I forget a physical book I can still read something.

I came across a 2024 fantasy read a long, Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. A chapter a day to complete all the books by the end of the year. Starting with The Magician's Nephew and ending with Deathly Hallows.
Announcing the 2024 Fantasy Classics Chapter-a-Day Read-Along

Only set I don't own is Lord of the Rings, as I couldn't get into it any time I tried before, but I'm sure I can get them cheap in charity shops.

I realized that in my research! Honestly it works for me- I love classic books. I think the juxtaposition in how literature was written even just 100 years ago versus now is so interesting; I like the flow of a lot of classic novels (i've been working on The Count of Monte Cristo for a couple months now, and something about the bluntness of the storytelling versus the heightened language is just really exciting to me!).

Iv got multiple books on the go at the moment. Its actually annoying, I start one then start another without finishing the 1st
So I've got about 8/9 books on the go. I have two audiobooks included in that. One borrowed from the library so I should focus on finishing that one first. However I'm enjoying The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry more than the library one.

I like audiobooks - you dont have to put strain on your eyes to listen to sonething.
Recieved a classic Dracula novel for christmas - I'm looking forward to reading it.

My sister has all the Stephen King ones - but took them with her when she moved out years ago...

I do often find that it's very easy to miss things in an audiobook though. I have to be doing something very passive while listening or I'll just tune it out. I don't have a commute to work, it's a 2 minute walk away, so can't listen that time, so I have to sit down and listen to it.

Audiobooks work in the car for me. Other than that, I also have difficulty concentrating.

I bought myself this to encourage me to read more books that I haven't read before. Of the 100 I've only read 14, so got plenty to choose from!
Listening to The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, so that'll be the first one off it.

I finished The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and just downloaded The Handmaid's Tale on audiobook from the library. Never watched it, so only a vague idea about the book. I do know it's 11 and half hours long through, so hope I've got time to listen before I have to renew it. I found a few of the books on the library app so that's going to help.

I just borrowed "Icebreaker" from the library, let's see if it is all booktok claims it is. Apparently hockeyplayers are all the rage on booktok. Or perhaps that ship has already sailed.

Realized I did not hit my self-imposed goal to read all the Buffy and Angel books last year, but the journey continues this year!

I went charity shopping today, found 2 books from the list, and then got persuaded into buying others as I'm doing a Lord of the Rings read a long later this year, so got those, plus another 2. This was meant to be the year I buy less books! They are all second hand at least, so no full price books.

I got hooked yesterday on Youtube videos where people make their own reading journals. Very pretty!

I may have gotten overexcited and ordered a bunch of stickers in order to do the same myself, but by the time those arrive, I will probably have gotten bored with the idea. Oh well, presents for the nieces.

I saw some on Instagram and was tempted too.
My minimal goal is to read at least 15 minutes a day of a novel, or a chapter. Or more.
That along with my morning news of course.
I used to read a lot more, but I stopped and now I have a hard time focusing. So I'm baby steps back into reading often again.

The problem with the news is it does not really brighten your day.

I'm doing a chapter a day with a few books. I might have to up the Nelson Mandela one to two chapters a day, so I finish it before I start on the Lord of the Rings chapter a day in April as I expect those chapters will be longer than the Chronicles of Narnia chapters.

We're starting Anna Karenina on January 29th, so I'm going to try and finish Northanger Abbey by then, but I'm a third of the way through and kinda bored of it. Someone tell me it gets more interesting!

I keep thinking I should retry some of the 19th century books that I've struggled with in the past.

Do it! Then you have less rereads this year. I want to do at least 50% books I've not read before this year. I've started on War of the Worlds, its a shorter one to read at work.

There is also the advantage that you can get 19th century books for free (digitally).

I am not really sure why I struggle with some books from that period and others I don't. Dracula was easy. Frankenstein is hard going.
