Reading Season 9 but never watched "Angel" - problem?

Hey all...

I've been reading the Buffy (and now the Angel and Faith) comics, and am keeping up with them.

They make a few references to characters, events and plot points in the Angel series, but it hasn't stopped me from understanding what's going on, so far.

However, based on what folks have said here, it sounds like more knowledge of the Angel series will be useful in upcoming issues.

Do you think it will be difficult to understand who/what some of the people and actions are in these upcoming issues? I have the whole series of Angel at home, just haven't watched it yet. Took me long enough to get through all of Buffy, and don't have a lot of time to watch all of Angel (tho' I want to). I think also that the characters and evolution of Buffy - plus the fact that it's about a Kick Ass Babe(tm) as opposed to a Brooding Hunk(tm) was more motivating and novel for me. 🙂

I think you can get by, but there are a few characters and story-lines that you will be missing out on that would make things more clear.

You already know Dru from BtVS but she sad a small part on Angel that may be mentioned. Connor is another character that was introduced in the Angel series that I think (I could be wrong) is going to be involved or at least mentioned. Not knowing his back story could cause some confusion.

Another thing you are missing is the development of Angel and Faith's friendship. Him helping her and the two of them becoming friends was a pretty significant thing and you are completely missing that story. I suppose if you have not questions about why they have the connections/loyalty/obligations they do then it won't bother you much.

BTW: I really enjoyed Angel (I even ended up liking it more than BtVS) so I encourage you to watch it when you get a chance. 🙂
 
Sadly Darkhorse and (seemingly) Joss like to pretend Angel never happened....which sucks because Angel was awesome. But I would highly recommend watching the show, not to understand season 9, but because it's an incredible show on it's own

I agree. Angel was an amazing show. Yeah, you could probably get by, but you'd miss out on a helluva lotta good stuff- a definitely positive expansion/addition to the Buffyverse! And Angel is sooo much more than brooding in his own series! (Although lots of laughs about the broodiness lol)
 
My advice to you, watch Angel INSTEAD of reading the comics. Angel is a brilliant programme, with fantastic characters and brilliant writing. The comics have done nothing for me but tarnish the two programmes I loved so much, and my favourite characters.
 
I would suggest, to get the full impact of the comics, that you watch the Angel series(and the comic series Angel After the fall) and save the comics for later. I think that would definitly pay off, considering Angel characters will probably appear eventually.

Angel go through so much on his own show, and even though I can't deny that it seems like darkhorse forgot lots of things Angel learned during the show (for example not to trust prophecies and to go behind the back of your friends for "the greater good") I think you will definitly benefit from watching Angel. Atleast the eps with Faith in them.
