Realistic accents

I know Kendra's accent was supposed to be Jamaican. It would just make much more sense for her to be African, given her backstory.
 
This thread reminds me of the Lee Evans criticisms in the late-90s. The critics panned his "fake" British accent, and boy were their faces red when they found out that he's 100% British, born, raised, and continues to reside in England 🙂

But Alexis spent like, 13 years in the UK, did James ever spend that much time there? I suppose the x-factor is where he stayed. He stayed in London but where?

Also even if James did Shakespearean Theatre, that doesn't take into account any regional dialect and accents.

But considering the amount of time Alexis spent in the Uk, I think that may have given him an advantage.

Oh yeah, I just meant in general, doing Shakespearean Theatre probably helps people fine-tune whatever accent they're pursuing.

I definitely agree that Alexis actually living there helped him out, and I thought his accent was flawless.
 
I actually thought Drusilla's accent was awesome, but I don't know anything about accents. Maybe it was just her creepy voice that was so different from her usual, kinda cute voice, that I liked 😛

Absolutely. It wasn't like the others, but it still sounded British to me. 🙂 I just figured there were different forms of the Brit accent... like with American. And I thought Dru's was not only awesome to hear, but totally fitted her.

Actually there are more varieties of British accent than American accent - as Higgins points out in Pygmalion, you can tell which town a person's from by their accent - in London, which neighbourhood.
Buffy's British (?) accent in the Halloween episode in season 2. THAT makes me cringe.

Sometimes Spike slipped up (the way he pronounced Wolfram & Hart always annoyed me) but other than that, and of course, the mostly-dreadful Liam accent, I found them all pretty awesome/believable. 🙂

I never noticed how he said W&H, but he didn always say 'ass' as opposed to 'arse', which isn't proper for a London boy.
Like most of you i think James and Alexis do best and lol I did not know that Alexis wasn't British.

I don't think it's supposed to be English, I think it's supposed to be colonial American.

I'm not sure... when one thinks colonial America, noble women don't exactly come to mind. And I thought it was sort of supposed to be a European thing because it was for Angel... to be like his special ladies back in the day.
 
I don't think she was trying to speak with an English accent at all there - I somehow think Joss would have made her do a better job if she were...
