Really a BTVS fan?

I have a question that I hope won't cause drama. I know there isn't really a litmus test for who is and who isn't a fan. One might also argue there aren't any levels of fans but I can't get over this so I came here to ask you guys. If someone says they are a big fan of BTVS but has no plans to ever buy the season eight comics does that seem sort've off? Is this person a fan? Do you know "fans" like this? Fans who liked the show but won't read the comics? If you do or have an idea of the mindset of these "fans" then please explain. I just can't consider these people to be fans. I can understand not buying/reading the alternate universe books but the season eight comic is a continuation of the world you're supposed to be a fan of! Its somewhat similar to my friend.... He says he's a fan of the football team Manchester United. He's only watched two games this past season and has even asked me what their standings are from time to time (this is even more rich considering I support Liverpool) and yet he says he's a fan. If you're a fan then you pay attention to your team. Thats not a fan to me. So once again I ask can you be a BTVS fan and completely disregard season eight?
 
Maybe someone just isn't at all into comics, and reading comics isn't fun to them?

I have friends though, who claim to be Buffy fans, but also tell me they're not Joss fans.. Now that I don't get, uh uh..
 
Here's my problem - I bought the first comic...and I haven't had a chance to run out to the store to grab the rest - I am a HUGE Buff fan...love the Buff, so why not just wait for the Trade Paperback...experience the whole season in one shot ya know?

Yeah but youre definetly going to buy the trade paperback (though I couldnt do that. a month is horrible for me. i just hope joss doesnt get all procrastinaty like he did with xmen) but what I cant understand are people who are pretty much refusing to accept season eight.

I consider myself a Buffy fan but I'm not going to by the comics. I'm not a comic person. If the season 8 were to come out in novel form I'd probably get it....but then again, I might not.

Everyone defines fandom differently. I consider myself a fan of the Brisbane Broncos...I don't go out of my way to watch their games but I do keep check of whether they won or lost and I am disappointed when they lose. I know it doesn't make me as big of a fan as someone else that would paint their face and rock up to the stadium but I still think I'm a fan.

I don't think that disregarding season 8 doesn't make you a fan. It just means that some fans are more passionate about it than others.
 
I bought the first issue of the Season 8 comic - first comic I have ever bought actually - still haven't managed to read all of it yet, and whilst I can appreciate that it carries straight on from Season 7, I really cannot see me buying the other issues. I'm just not into comics, and though I was impressed by the Season 8 comic, it's just not the same as watching the TV Show as it was originally intended - that's how I associate Buffy, as a TV Show and always will.

I still consider myself a fan of Buffy, and don't feel I'm less of a fan by not purchasing the comics. I still show my adoration for the show, in it's original format, in other ways such as watching the dvds, making fanart etc.

I can totally understand that not everyone who is a fan of Buffy will go and buy the comics, but I don't think that is a bad thing - we all show our love for the show in different ways. 😉
 
i've read comics all my life...Spiderman and X-Men mostly, but i stopped collecting them when i was a teenager and a new obsession took over...BTVS. so, a comic form of my favorite show was a great idea for me. i've read a lot, if not most of the BTVS/ATS comics, and i have a number of them in graphic novel form. so S8 is really great for me...if i can't have the show in one form, i go back to my first love, comics.
but i do understand that there are some people out there who just can't get their heads around comics. it's really not a format that everyone will appriciate, and i get that. if they don't want to read the comics, that's fine with me. like edb said, they show their love for these shows in another way...fanart, fanfic, etc.
i'm not going to hold it against anyone if they don't want to read the comics. it doesn't make them any less of a fan in my eyes.
 
Well personally I haven't read them because I can't get them anywhere in France... and I'm not rushing to buy them online cause it doesn't sound that exciting to me... I guess I think I could be disappointed... because to me BtVS is linked to its actors and actresses... to images and voices... all of that lack in comics...
Yet, of course I'm curious about what is happening in S8, and the fact that Joss is realizing it makes me want to read it at some point. But I don't think I'll enjoy it as much as the actual show.

Plus, the final episode was a good ending for a show like this... and we had an idea about what some of the characters had become with Angel... so that was enough for me. :silly:
 
I'm kind of offended that one would assume I'm not a 'true' Buffy fan considering I don't read the comics.

I hate comics. In my opinion, they're very hard to read and follow. I've always just been a book person. So, of course I have not read the season 8. However, this does not make me any less of a fan. I still continue to watch the show on DVD quite a bit, still listen to OMWF soundtrack occasionaly on my morning commute. So, just because I don't read a story written in a form that completely doesn't appeal to me, I am tainted somehow?

Saying Fans whose 'fandom' has been decreased because they don't read comics is completely untrue.
 
I've had this same discussion with people who refuse to even consider reading Buffy fan fiction. Granted, some of the fan fiction out there isn't so very good, but some of it is really good, and besides that, Whedon even suggested that Buffy fans read it, something I'm not sure he ever said about the Buffy and Angel novels currently on the market.

My point, I should say before I get completely lost in the fan fic thing, is that some people see Buffy as a story involving living, moving (as in actors) people, not pictures or printed words. For them, the only alternative to Buffy on television is Buffy in the movies or some other character from the canon either on tv or in the movies. As for myself, I'll take Buffy in any form I can get it in, just as long as the quality is there.
 
I think the people that choose not to read the comic are still fans, But I wanna know if something happens in the comics will they take it as fact. Like just say Willow died in the comic, would they count willow as dead?

I think the people that ignoreing the comic... it's not that there not fans, cuz that would be the wrong word. But it would be like watching, just say, Hush not likeing the episode and just pretending it is just not part of the overall story.

Fan fiction is completly different though. Cuz it's written by anyone, but the comic is actually written by Joss, and if Buffy was to get another series all the stuf that happened in the comic would be included!
 
When I started watching BtVS I didn't even think about that there could ever be a BtVS comic (created by Joss I mean). And I guess it's a difference to be a fan of a TV show and a fan of BtVS in general. I wouldn't say that anyone who is only a fan or the show is any less of a fan, since it was obviously originally a TV show (not counting the movie).

Like BEG said, fan fiction is something completely different. I refuse to read fanfics 'cause to me it just hasn't got anything to do with Buffy. Just like I don't read the novels/comics not written/created by Joss, 'cause their not "real" imo, and if some random person made a BtVS spin-off/movie I wouldn't count it as BtVS either. The season 8 comic though, is to me official BtVS, almost as much as the show is.
 
There is that isn't there? If the mythology of the Buffyverse changes, or there are key devolpments of enlightenment you're not really up on them unless you read the comics. If you don't, you have to get the info second hand.

So far the reveals on that kind of thing have been minor. Buffy's not with the Immortal, the Willow and Kennedy thing is rocky, Amy's a power witch, stuff like that. But soon we'll find out how Angel got out of the alley, and who's still alive. And what if they start to get into key elements of the mythology like how exactly does the slayer line pass. How does it go from multiple slayers in Chosen to single slayers in Fray, does the line still pass through Faith, stuff like that.
 
Is the Trade Paperback going to be all the issues in one? That would be awesome, then I would definetly get that, I just don't have enough money with bills & such to buy every issue & I know I'll get left behind.

I love Joss Whedon's writing, I love Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and Serenity. But I do not like Joss Whedon as a person very much. He annoys me. I don't like his attitude very much either. I don't praise the ground he walks on like a lot of Buffy fans. Something about him just completely turns me off, I'd rather not ever have to see him and just enjoy the work he does.

Anyway, I am a fan of the Buffyverse, I own all the Buffy and Angel DVDs, and I like reading the non-canon novels when I can, but I don't read the comics. One day, when it's released in a trade paperback, I MIGHT. But I generally don't dig comics and will therefore not make an effort right now to read them, I might never read them.

To answer BEG's question, if something happened in the comics that I didn't like, I'd personally just dismiss it as being separate, even if Joss says it's canon. It's very easy to do seeing as how it's a totally different format.

I would much rather the show be continued in a novel series rather than comic form...*sigh*.
 
I am not a comic fan in the least but I pre-ordered the season 8, even the variant covers. So far I have 6 comics. I am a true Buffy fan, I don't know how I really feel about people saying they are huge fans and not getting into the 8th season.

I consider myself to be a fan of BtVS. I began watching it during the early stages of the first season and continued without a break after that. I have all seven seasons on DVD and still watch them on a regular basis. I take an interest in the other work of the many people who contributed to making the show what it was. It's certainly one of my favourite television shows of all time, probably only beaten by Dr Who, a show I first began to watch when I was a child.

I have no immediate plans to buy the S8 comic "“ and probably wouldn't do so unless an anthology edition was to be released at some point in the future. Even then, I'm not sure if I would buy it. I have never been a comic book reader and I don't really like comics very much. I have skimmed through the first S8 comic, thanks to a friend, and I've seen bits and pieces of a couple of the others. It looks pretty good, but it's just not my thing. I love the TV show. I think it told a perfect story and that's good enough for me.

I have a lot of respect for Joss Whedon, but I don't have the same love for his other work as I do for BtVS. As examples, Angel is okay and I can happily watch it, but it doesn't have the same emotional impact on me. I can understand why Firefly has such a fanatical cult following, but I didn't really take to it myself. Try as I might, I don't like Serenity. I've watched it three times and liked it less each time.

If this means I am not a real Buffy fan I will gladly accept that and continue to watch the show and enjoy it as much as ever.
