Really a BTVS fan?

If we're all agreeing to disagree there isn't an issue, is there? But for some reason there seems to be.

The reason I believe that what you're doing is stirring up trouble is because this seems to have gone past a constructive discussion of your initial question. It's not your entirely your fault as we're all stoking the fire here but you honestly can't believe that you wouldn't offend people by making such a statement.

I call truce...because, yes, it shouldn't matter what other people believe in your level of fandom but it doesn't mean you can't defend it if it is called into question.

... By your defintion you are a fan, no? Then whats the problem? If someone told me I wasn't a fan of Buffy the vampire slayer because I didn't oh say... buy the action figures then I'd laugh in their face because I know I am a fan. Would I be insulted? No, because I know I am a fan. Simple.

If you don't care about what others have to say about what makes you a fan, then why did you start this thread, attacking those people who didn't read the comics? It's kind of contradictory.

But, sure I'll be in the truce here. I'm a fan. You're a fan. We're all fans!

Thats not true, It just doesn't work like that. Like if you were debating something and your using facts from the series, and suddenly someone says some fact from one of the other comics that’s not officially canon it's going to mess everything up! You have to respect the fact that you can’t decide whats canon, we have to take what Joss says as canon!

I get your point, but if you want to personally believe that the Origin is canon, that is your personal preference, although you do have to understand what you might consider canon may not actually be canon. 🙂

I'm flabbergasted at how you got that I said being a fan of the tv show is irrelevant. Honestly, I'd love to see how that train of thought came into existence.

Um, well what you said in your original post was this:

You didn't mention "being a fan of the story". Being a fan of the story and being a fan of the TV show are two different things, that's what I tried to say. For example I am a huge fan of the Les Mis story, which doesn't mean I have to like all the Les Mis movies/musical/book/etc.. You can definitely be a fan of the BtVS TV show and not be a fan of the comic. Just like you can be a fan of BtVS (TV show) but not love season 1.. or 7.. or 4.. etc..

You are not a fan of the story if you do not care what happens in the story. point blank. There are many here who are not fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Here you are basically saying that if you aren't a fan of "the story" you're not a true fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Which to me doesn't make any sense. (For reasons I believe I stated in my previous post.)

I am a very passionate BtVS fan. Just last week, I paid over 200 euro for the complete BtVS DVD Collection. But I have never read any of the Season 8 comics and have no immediate plans to do so. Does that make me less of a Buffy fan than someone who does read the comics? The answer is a resounding "no". Of course it doesn't. I like reading comics sometimes and would certainly check out Season 8 if I managed to come across a copy, but I just can't bring myself to consider it 'canon'. Not in the sense the TV series is, anyway. The world of Buffy unfolds before us onscreen. We watch the characters we know and love change and develop over the course of many years. The comic-book experience is much more detached. There is no connection to be forged because we're looking at illustrations, not 'real' characters. Furthermore, I'm sure that over in the US it's very easy to get your hands on all the latest American comics, but I live in Ireland, and such titles are harder to come by here. So am I a loyal fan? Yes. Absolutely. One hundred per cent. But I'm a fan of the series, not the excess merchandise that serves only as a distraction.

I believe you've missed my point (and initial question) as well. At no point was I debating the fanhood of someone with regards to the Jossverse, Whendonverse, etc. I'm debating the fandom of the Buffyverse (the story, characters, etc). There are not varying degrees of fanhood of the story. Either you like the story, characters, etc and want to follow it or you do not. You , apparently, do not.

Additionally I believe it is tantamount to being ridiculousness to say you will simply disregard Season 8. Star Wars fans can dislike Episodes 1-3 but they can not pretend they do not exist. You can dislike Season 8 but you can not pretend it does not exist.

Star Wars Episodes 1-3 were produced in the same medium as Episodes 5-6. THEY'RE ALL FILMS. So they're pretty much impossible to ignore. Buffy Season 8, on the other hand, is probably only well-known among comic-book fans.

I have a room in my house which is called the Buffy room , one of my doggies name is Buffy, I have Buffy on video and on dvd and the Angel serie so without reading the comics I consider myself a BTVS fan!! And I am always wearing a Tshirt whit a Buffy picture on it when going to the fitness training and I always take my big Buffy towel to the yoga classes.

I've been a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for over ten years, and while I have yet to read a single page of season eight, I do not consider myself any less of a fan.

To be completely honest, I've never read a comic-book; I've seen them, sure, but their layout confuses me and so I do not know how to go about reading them. Furthermore, I wasn't certain as to whether or not the events occurring in the comics would be considered genuine or otherwise. I knew full-well that Joss would participate in the creation process, but I didn't know if such events would constitute separately from the current mythology, and thus, the reasoning behind why I've (temporarily) stalled.

I'm not into comics. And I know "season 8" is done by Joss, and "supposedly" 'canon', but... I can't bring myself to care, somehow. It's a comic. And Buffy is a tv show. I can't see how reading a comic can ever be anything but a big disappointment in comparison. But that's just me.
